I really love your vids! They're so educational! I really need your advice. I started working here in the US last year. I started with a Wells Fargo secured credit card because it's located just right across my workplace and it was easy. It's in good standing and I pay it off every month and I've never paid any interest. My credit scores were Experian 663, Transunion 662 and Equifax 662. Then I got the Kohl's Charge Card last month. A week after that, I got the Walmart Credit Card, the TJ Maxx Credit card and the JCPenney Credit Card. Again, all of them are in good standing and I just made 1st payments on all of them. I was never late and I never paid any interest. Now, because of my credit card applications, I ended up with 5 hard inquiries. This resulted my Transunion to dip to 619 and my Equifax to dip to 622. I haven't checked Experian yet. I will be travelling by September and I really want to get a Capital One Platinum Mastercard now because of the $0 foreign transaction fees. Should I wait until next month? Or should I risk getting it now?
@AskSebby7 жыл бұрын
Probably inquiries and a hit to your average age of accounts. Capital One focuses on subprime so a $620 might be fine, but I would wait a few months for your score to rise again.

is the utility using % based on how much u owe when ur statement come? I have one credit card that is due the 19th and another that's due on the 7th so how does that work?
@mindsetwithmarie6765 жыл бұрын
Yes, the % is based on what is the statement. To pay a portion of your bill before, find out what is your statement closing date and get the balance reduced by that date for it to reflect on the statement.

I don't see why so many people are so antsy about getting inquiries. Let's assume perfect record in everything else but one person has 10 inquiries and the other 1-2, then the person with 10 inquiries can get a max score of 90/100 (A-) vs 97.5/100 so A+. So, unless you *really* want that 800+ score, I don't think it really matter as much as some people make it out to be.

Hey Sebby. Great video. Question: I am floating around 4 credit inquiries. I would like to add more to build a more solid credit base. What is the max number of inquiries one should have on their account at a single time? I understand the 5/24 rule by Chase when applying for their cards. My average age is about 2 years. Thanks a ton!
@AskSebby7 жыл бұрын
No limit. I know people with 20+ inquiries(combining pulls) and are at 30/24 who are still sitting at 750-780. NOT suggesting you do this, since it's extreme, but I wouldn't necessarily be too worried. It just depends on if you're willing to take 2 steps back (for the 3 steps forward).

You should be paying it off in full. I'm referring to pre-paying it. i.e., you go out to eat for $20.50. You immediately pay off $20.49 that night (instead of the whole $20.50). If you still don't get it, I would keep watching more videos or read the post that explains it in clear detail.

What do you mean before statement closes? Are you wanting to makesure you pay whatever balance down to 0-9% before the statement is generated? So for example you pay in full every month, but my statement generates on the 8th of every month let's say Janurary 8th. Do you want your balance to be at 0-9% before that statement is made out? So that the Februrary due date is the amount equaling to 0-9% utilization rate?

I'm considering paying off completely both of them due to high interests %, either by 1) opening 2 new credit cards with good length of free APR/BT; or 2) 1 credit card and a loan. Yes, It would make your credit limit low, but as long as you don't spend more than 30% of the $300 credit limit = no more than $90. You're not really wasting money when you already spend it on gas for transportation.

Just to make sure I understand it: say I have a $200 limit, #1 should I spend however much I want and pay it off before the statement period? Or #2 should I try to use only 10% of my card? #3 some people are telling me to keep an open line of credit and carry over a small amount each month (I don’t believe that builds credit though), just want to know how much I should spend out of $200 and when to pay it, before the statement period or end of the month/cycle?
@MaxMikescrool15 жыл бұрын
First one is wrong. You want to pay off most of it so that when the statement comes you have a more or less 10% utilization balance. Leave $20 or at least like one dollar
@Sybist5 жыл бұрын
MaxMikescrool1 thanks for the reply; is there a reason I should leave an open line every month? Is the increase in % I have to pay outweighed by how much it helps my score? Just not sure how it helps
@simoncohn-gruenwald88675 жыл бұрын
2 is best for credit building. The rewards on $200/mo cant be worth much and keeping a balance is a horrible idea! It doesnt help at all. Keeping low utilization will allow you to get more cards, and you can spend $200/mo on the card once your credit limit is at $2000. Thinking long term is the best way to go with credit cards.
@TheNayalin6 жыл бұрын
Do you really need to keep a $1 balance? Can you just pay in full and get the same benefits?
@AskSebby6 жыл бұрын
If I don't use the card that month, I just keep it at $0 and don't worry about it. The main benefit of the $1 is to add "on-time payments" -- I've had interesting recon calls with Citi where they were confused how I had >10 cards but no "recent payments for last 2-3 months" since I paid it down to $0 every few days. YMMV and do what makes sense for you.

@eflo82647 жыл бұрын
Steven Guevara I was wondering the same thing. It seems like a better deal than the Amex Platinum because the $300 yearly credit can be used for any travel expense, and not a preselected airline. Also, every time I've had to call the CSR line, I get a live agent right away
@AskSebby7 жыл бұрын

There's nothing that it makes sense to downgrade to imo. Green makes no sense. Gold might be a good option with an effective AF of $95, but I'm happier paying an effective AF of $150 for the additional perks (Centurion Lounge since I'm based in SFO, better access to exclusive tickets, etc.)

Thoughts on applying for the Chase Freedom, Chase AARP, and Chase Slate at the same time (I know about 2/30 with chase, but I have a good relationship with my banker so I hope he can get me through; otherwise my target is just the Freedom and AARP)? I already have the CSR and Freedom Unlimited. The goal would be to upgrade the Chase Slate to the Chase Freedom later on (I think I read that I can't apply for two of the same Chase Cards at the same time).

That sounds fine. There's not much advantage of applying in-person though -- your banker doesn't really play a role in terms of credit issuance decisions. I think I'll just apply online then, the banker I was dealing with seemed to be a bit full of himself anyways. :) Also would you recommend not applying for a card if you currently have a balance on your main card? I always pay in full via auto pay but that hasn't kicked in yet.

I would pre-pay the card. If you were applying for 1 card, I would tell you not to worry but given your plan of 2-3, I think pre-paying is the right move. Can you fill out a questionnaire? I want to make sure you're playing 5/24 correctly. Copy paste this in the bottom details section :) www.asksebby.com/free-card-consultation/

hahah your illustrations bro. Quick Questions, I pay off my balance weekly, good idea or bad idea?
@AskSebby7 жыл бұрын
Good idea. Just leave a little bit so there's a balance due when the statement closes. It could easily just be $1 or $5. I pay off my cards weekly too, but more as cash flow management.

to be clear, leave a balance on my statement as it closes($1-5) then when due date comes around just pay it off?
@geewiz82536 жыл бұрын
Anthony Nielsen Good question. I’m guessing... yes? But don’t know if the next statement is better? Dunno... they all say pay balances off so maybe first option?

Anthony Nielsen Lol. Just saw this was from a year ago! 😂 What did u end up doing then?

The Hyatt card , can I save my hotel stay without using it , if I'm paying $50 dollars annual fee ?
@AskSebby6 жыл бұрын
It expires every year.
@michaell89576 жыл бұрын
Ask Sebby His there any cards out there, you can save your hotel stays and not expire etc?
@AskSebby6 жыл бұрын
No. The plan is usually getting many of these "keeper" cards and creating trips. Or finding a player 2/3/4 and doing 2/3/4 nights at Hyatt/IHG/etc.
@michaell89576 жыл бұрын
Ask Sebby I understood the the 1st and 2nd sentence, just not the last one , meaning of.. finding a player to do 2/3/4 and doing 2/3/4 night at Hyatt/ etc I'm lost lol, thanks for your feedback by the way.

I did a product change from my very first credit card. Does the age of that card get wiped out? PS. This product change happened without getting a credit inquiry done.
@AskSebby7 жыл бұрын
PC is one of the main strategies to keep your credit history alive. There shouldn't be an inquiry for a PC (for most banks).
@Singhnuhmon007 жыл бұрын
Ask Sebby but the age of that changed card account, does it start back to a new account?
@AskSebby7 жыл бұрын
No. It doesn't matter. It's still the same account to the bureaus. Again, product changes are the method people use to convert unused cards to useful cards, while keeping their credit history (specifically, average age of accounts) alive.

May I make a suggestion with your videos. Please slow your speech, it sounds like you're running a race at times. Great info but slow down your talking just a bit please and thanks again for the information.

KZbin has a built in speed function. Change it to 0.75x. Alternatively, tons of extensions if you want to be more precise (0.9x).

I agree with pretty much everything except for the AAoA. If you didn’t apply for a new card in the first place, looking at the example he gave, then you would have your AAoA be 15 years...

How can we find out our limit when we have the amex platinum card?
@AskSebby6 жыл бұрын
Amex Plat does not have a set limit: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIiQl32sgtmFfpo

does every time you open a credit card counts as an inquiry?
@AskSebby7 жыл бұрын
For the most part, yes. Amex sometimes might not do pulls and with other issuers, you can "combine pulls" (i.e., you can apply for 2 Chase cards on the same day, get approved for both, and still only have 1 pull).
