Thanks for this. My landings have improved immensely. I also believe there's a "sweet spot" in the windshield where if you pick an aim point on the runway, line it up with the sweet spot and keep the aim point in that spot, 9 times out of 10 you'll nail the landing.

One thing people often miss about is fuel balance Mostly, I set my fuel to 30%, it reduces the overall stall speed, so I can go slow and safe onto the runway, and a smooth landing

@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
SimuDan little different when flying a jet. Especially when using autopilot on the ILS. You actually flip the process - power for airspeed, pitch for altitude. The autopilot will maintain the glide slope with pitch, so you as the pilot will find yourself adjust power for airspeed (rather than for altitude) in the Jets. I’ve heard it described that way by jet pilots as well. Play around with it. The concepts are roughly the same. You must manage your energy smartly and not fall behind into a low energy state where your nose is high, and you’re low and slow. That’s a dangerous place to be.

to relieve myself of having to constantly monitor the speed, I have decided to tweak your method by sensing my right hand about to push the joystick forward, and then just before my right hand wants to do that, I slowly start to reduce the throttle with my left hand and vice versa all the while I am looking at where I want to aim to descend! I am finding that my right hand is ultimately guiding my left hand to find the ideal speed at whatever descend rate and flaps settings is happening at that split second moment, this seems to work even for the 747! my Left hand even begins to sense when it needs to cut the power just before the flare! Wow! in the end, my right hand is always moving opposite direction of my left hand, and I allow both of my hands to move any amount they want at any time. I just look at the point I want to descent and let my body's motor skills take over automatically.
@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
You're essentially describing the exchange of kinetic energy (right hand) for potential energy (left hand). By reducing the power (pulling your left hand back), you're taking energy out of the system.. If you don't adjust with the pitch you will risk stalling the aircraft.

I use to have the ai assistance guidance route to show me where to land, but I noticed it's too long and the speed it makes you go is going to stall the plane. So I have been landing by slowing down close to when I'm going to land and it lands pretty okay, just sometimes it can be an hard landing. But thanks to your video and talking about how to maintain the speed instead I think I will have less hard landing and more of a soft landing.

I find that I have to manually adjust the control sensitivities for elevator and rudder to get something a bit more realistic. Adjusting sensitivities in game doesn't really help. Like every previous sim, I find it necessary to navigate to the aircraft config files and change parameters there prior to starting the sim. Once done, much of the excess jerking up and down or side to side motion is eliminated. It's a god awful path to the config files in this sim, however, so I won't bother with that unless someone wants it.

There's a joining pattern that is standard but differs by countries. For the UK for example, it's to fly overhead at 1000' above pattern altitude, then descend on the dead side to join crosswind. You would then fly downwind to the side of the runway and when the end of the runway is at your rear 45 degrees, then turn base before returning final. For the US, it's typically a job downwind at 45 degrees. At least, that's how I remember it, may have changed, I'll let a local add info. :)

Hey Atmos, loving your videos, keep it up! I do have a question, do you have any tips for adjusting trim accurately? I can’t for the life of me get the trim wheel to keep a level flight. I’ll adjust it just a little bit at +500FPM, and i’ll pitch one notch up and i’ll be at -500FPM. Thanks and keep it up!
@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
The way you adjust trim in real life is through feeling the pressure you’re having to keep on the yoke to maintain a desired state. For example, to maintain a -500 fpm climb from a cruise setting I would need to reduce power and then either adjust the yoke forward or backward, depending on the trim speed. If you’re having to pull back to maintain a -500 fpm descent, then you need to trim nose up. The way you do it in real life is to trim nose up until the yoke no longer has to be pulled back. To do it in the sim is similar, except you don’t get to feel the pressure on your controls. So.. it’s almost like trial and error.
@ThatCenterController

@@ThatCenterController see if you can get hold of an external trim wheel. Saitek used to do one but no longer sold but you may find one on eBay or if have access to a 3D printer, see thingiverse.com to make one. Makes a huge difference to trying to trim and is far more realistic.

Something I've noticed with the sim pattern assistance: it doesn't seem to have you dsecending before you turn on base, not that I can notice anyway. According to the SimToolKitPro landing report, I land 800-1000ft down the runway, 50 knots with full flaps and idle power. Would I be correct in assuming that the sim pattern is somewhat inaccurate? Also, 70 knots according to the pattern assist is too fast on final. 55-60 knots seem to be fine, again, according to the pattern assist which may be inaccurate. I'm not a pilot so I don't know.
@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm in the 172S I like to be about 60-64 knots on final. I think the published 50 foot (just before landing) airspeed on short field landings for the 172S is 61 knots. 55 is getting a little too slow for my comfort but as you cross the threshold it's probably fine.

@@atmosflight5534 Nice landing though. I will say in real life after a certain pitch attitude say if your flared to high and speed bled off before you touchdown you can end up with such a high pitch that you either tailstrike or stall and smash it. In the C172, its easier to see this from the outside but it can happen. Thanks for the video.

AtmosFlight That would be great for those trying to compare realism. I fly the 172 right now irl and I’m a few hours from the ppl check ride. The 172 in the sim isn’t that far off from real life tbh but certainly flies different. I just need them to fix the winds bug and I will be on the sim practicing for sure.

Both, but better in a dark room so that the IR receivers are not interfered with by ambient light.

can you tell me why when i use rudder, the nose pitches down. how do i make fine adjustments while maintaining level flight as i come in on approach.
@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
If you use too much rudder the plane banks and starts to lose lift so the nose begins to drop.

Great video! I always having trouble using the throttle to maintain a constant rate of descent and i always end up too low or too high on final. Also when flaring on the runway i just do it like you explained by lifting the nose up but then i end up floating above the runway and no touchdown happen. Any idea what i can do to improve?
@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
Power needs to be set to idle when crossing the threshold, and you really want to be crossing the threshold at a low airspeed close to your published approach speed. For a Cessna 172S that’s pretty close to 160 knots.

@@atmosflight5534 Hmm i do cut the throttle when i cross the threshold and my speed is around 60 then.. should check it out more next time. Thank you!

Great video! If i get assigned by ATC to a runway to do a visual approach on. In the air how do i line up with the correct runway? As i dont know which runway is which in the air, cheers!
@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
Mr Scoofy couple of methods. Depends on what you’re flying. You can always use an ILS to back you up on what runway you’re flying - that’s what airliners do. Otherwise, use your airport chart (can find free ones on airnav) to see where the runway is in relation to the airport and pick it out visually.

@@atmosflight5534 Not exactly sure how im supposed to pick the runway in relation to the airport , could you maybe explain a bit more in detail? Also, what chart whould i have to look at to decide a STAR and Transition if im doing IFR?
@atmosflight5534
@atmosflight5534 3 жыл бұрын
Mr Scoofy sure. If you’re flying VFR, you should be able to navigate using a VFR sectional map, GPS, VOR etc. say you’re 10 miles south of an airport with two north south runways (36 L, 36 R). If ATC clears you to make a straight in approach for 36L, you can look at an airport map (can find them on airnav free) and you should be able to know what you’re looking for visually based on what you saw on the map and where you are in relation to the airport.

Could also set your heading as well if you don't have the charts. If runway is supposed to be 31 add a 0 to make it heading of 310 degrees to fly towards. If it's 2 it'll be heading of 20 degrees. If it's an L beside it that's left most runway for that runway. C is center and r will be right. Hope that helps

There's a working G1000 mod I will be showcasing soon, but overall systems depth/functionality lacks in the native game. A year from now, third party devs will have much better aircraft available for RNAV/instrument stuff. Give it time.

But if you're inside the plane and for instantly, you wouldn't see it. Seems like they've simulated it precisely. :) Other than popping up a dialog with the fateful news. They could have said how many bones were broken, number of survivors though. ;)
