I really like your videos; they're very informative and helpful for a beginner watercolorist like me. But I do not appreciate your reasoning that some students make mistakes because they're lazy. Some students, sure. But I think it's the difference in each student's learning process and that they don't know or haven't tried various techniques or experimented with different colors, paints, and brushes. I also think it's the teacher's job to realize their students' unique needs and tailor their teaching style to suit those different needs. As a private tutor, being flexible with my teaching style is important, especially when tutoring multiple students at the same time.

Laziness comes from unfamiliarity.
@wyrmoffastring
@wyrmoffastring 8 жыл бұрын
Might not always be laziness. Might be actual "OK it looks decent now, better not try anything else on it, because I'll ruin this" That was a mindset I had for YEARS. I started drawing seriously when I was about 12, I think, and for the longest time I didn't touch colour. I just did everything in pencil out of fear that any colour I would add would fail. I think it took me till I was about 16, when I got my first graphic tablet and started scanning in my work to colour on a computer, where I had the advantages of resetting everything if it failed, that I realized just what a mistake I made to not just get in and try things. And I agree with Roni that with students you need to not just assume it's either laziness or fear or something, because everyone is different. I myself have general anxiety disorder and some of my students have other issues, not necessarily ones you'd consider mental illness (like my own), that will impact their willingness to use certain media or techniques. Sometimes getting over it is as simple as explaining to them why their fears are not entirely reflected in reality and that they simply misunderstood something about a medium, but other times a student may have certain strong memories or feeling connected with a medium that it may be hard or even impossible to breach that barrier. And it's ok if you can't. Not everyone needs to be brillaint with gouache so if your student just cannot use gouache it's fine. One thing you should never tell your students, or anyone for that matter, is that a fear they have is wrong. Fears are serious and should not be ignored, even the silly ones. When kids are scared of a monster under the bed we lean down to check if the monster's there to make sure for them it's not. We don't just scoff and say monsters don't exist. It should be the same for everything else.

Actually, I subscribed to this channel and after the second time I heard "Laziness" I went ahead and unsubscribed. Art and creativity is about the flow and enjoyment of it so if you aren't performing the way a teacher wants you to, it has nothing to do with "laziness" but removal of motivation or inspiration which was likely because of the teacher >.>

Your thoughts about your students' reliance on local colors caught my attention. I don't think your students were lazy. (Well, maybe a couple of them were. ;) ) I just think they probably hadn't trained their eyes and/or hands long enough. I taught German for a few years, and one thing that seemed to puzzle a lot of my fellow foreign language teachers is how some students have so much trouble producing certain sounds in their target language. For example, I had so many students who had an incredibly hard time correctly pronouncing the word "ich." Some of them pronounced it like "ik" and others pronounced it like "ish." And while it would be easy to say those people were just lazy and not practicing at home, I honestly think it had more to do with them either (1) not hearing the subtle difference of the German "ch" vs. the American "k" or "sh", or (2) not knowing how or being able to move their tongue and mouth in the way they need to move in order to pronounce that uniquely German sound that we don't have in our language. Another example, when I was learning Russian, the guy who was teaching me couldn't understand why I kept pronouncing the letters "ш" and "щ" the same. The thing was, as hard he tried to show me the difference, they honestly sounded the same to me! How can I reproduce something with the same subtleties if I can't hear those differences myself? I think that certainly goes for painting as much as it does for learning a language. When you have a talent for something, it can be easy to forget that some things might not come as naturally to others. You might be able to quickly pick out the hints of purple and gray in the brown of the tree trunk because you have an eye for color and years of practice under your belt, but to me it's just a shade of brown that I don't know how to accurately reproduce. I'm not lazy; I just can't see the purple or gray. I might be able to say "acht Eichhörnchen" because I have an ear for German and have been speaking it for nearly half my life, but to you I might just be saying "oct Ike horn chin." You're not lazy; you just can't hear German phonemes the same way I do. That said, I like the way you emphasize the need to take one's time, really study the colors, and add other colors to the local colors to make something more realistic. That's helpful advice. I just take issue with the use of the word "lazy" to describe a student. Instead, I would maybe emphasize that it takes a lot of time and practice, and encourage beginners to keep trying various color mixes and combinations until they get the hang of distinguishing those subtle varieties of colors.

+MushroomRaincloud Lazy is just not in my vocabulary...for anyone to judge another. We all have abilities that need training, and it takes time to reach confidence in any Feat. For someone, such as this teacher, to make assumptions (Lazy?) ...obviously she has forgotten her beginning years when she may have been just learning. She turned me off...to her labeling people so soon in this video. And I turned her OFF not to long after watching this video. I found other teachers who a lot more humble about their work...and they are Fabulous. Not everyone is going to Get IT, and some will give up early on. But the ones who are interested, talented to learn more...will endure. But to call them Less...just doesn't give people Room to be who they are. Keep searching...is my suggestion. We all can't be Artist, singers, teachers...but we will find our Way along the journey.

+Juliana Leo I couldn't agree more with both you and MushroomRaincloud!! Hearing her refer to her students as 'lazy' is a real turn-off even when she has great talent and skill to share it makes her sound snobbish. I also think that some of these mistakes that she says are beginner mistakes can really happen to anyone if they get in a hurry. I will look elsewhere for those more humble artists who genuinely love what they do as well as love sharing their passion.

I do have some natural talent...which is what drives me to learn more. But, can't learn it all at once. haha Thanks for the pat on the back... Mistake number two is something I thought for the longest time would be an obstacle to my style and I tried to ignore it, but as an adult I've realized that the pure saturation using local color can bring is actually a huge boon to my own personal style. A lot of these mistakes are relative, and a mistake is only really a mistake is it doesn't work for you in the grand scheme of things. Yeah, a lot of these mistakes really have no good side - but local colors and that rich, unreal look can have a very positive effect on some paintings. Never forget to explore and make mistakes in your search for your own style, kids.

Hahaha. I love it. I love how much righteousness is in the comment section here because she said some students might be lazy. OF COURSE some students are lazy. People in general can be lazy. This is obvious. And it's not always the teacher's fault if some students aren't motivated. I've been in plenty of (art) classes, and the student body can vary greatly, just like the quality of the instructor. I know all of you remember teachers talking about their favorite classes and their bad classes. I've seen plenty of students complain and drag their asses in classes that I thought were a blast. And there are lots of reasons for a student to neglect his work: partying all night, low self-esteem, bad time management, an unreasonable expectation for immediate results, etc. There can be valid reasons for being lazy and putting off work, but that doesn't change anything. It's interesting to me how differently people will treat an idea based on its framing. If people were asked, "Are there lazy art students?", 99% of respondents would answer, "Of course". But framed in this way, everybody and their mother is shocked by such a concept. Gasp! Art students? Lazy? It must be your fault! You must be a bad teacher! You are very condescending! &etc.

Students can be lazy a little, but it's more of inability to see colors. That's more prominent in people who starts drawing at older age. It's because in our daily lives we look at things as a whole and to draw something you need details and it's kinda difficult to change how your mind works. It's the same with pencil holding. When we draw we hold pencil differently when writing. I still strugle with colors (like a lot!!), but I hold pencil the right way without thinking.

I found that I make few of those mistakes, but they are never caused by laziness. It's rather a lack of understanding of how paints work. Many important details are not intuitive. When you're a beginner you won't see that purple highlight in the tree trunk, for you it just seems brown. That is why we need teachers :) once you see yellow being mixed into the green of a leaf you're like "right! how could I not think of it?". You're a good teacher. I love the question about shading with black - "is it really the darkest thing you've ever seen?". Well phrased questions like this one really help to understand painting. Very helpful videos :) (just please stop thinking of your students as lazy, unless they were forced to attend your classes by their moms) cheers!

About the "can I be done now?" attitude, yes some of my friends were like that in painting class, but me personally, it was because the class time was too short. I take a long time to paint, so.... I never got anything done, unless I went light with the colours.

I've found when I used to make some of these mistakes, it wasn't because I was lazy. I was unaware of the potential. I thought, well it's not looking that bad now, I think it's finished? I didn't know all of the techniques I could use to make it even better. My mind was closed to the colours and details, because I never needed to really notice those subtle variations in nature. It was also because I was scared to ruin what I was pleased with so far. Remember that our brains and visual memory works on abstractions. We have mental symbols of what things are, and sometimes it's hard to get past that "emoji icon" version that feels so right in your head. This is one of the most helpful things to learn as an artist. Pay attention to what you see, and don't be afraid to put it in your painting, it takes a while to build that type of confidence. Especially when you're not even sure how to mix the colours you see yet.

Very useful series of demonstrations: incidentally, I was very impressed by the ability of the Arches paper to withstand so much of the rough abuse to which you subjected it - try that on some of the paper I've been using and it would have disintegrated. Cheap paper, paint and brushes are a false economy: but I sometimes forget that when money is tight. Even when you're demonstrating a mistake, you seem able to produce superb paintings - probably the hyper-critical eye of the cat helps....

Hi, when I got my first artist quality W C box I got advised to take out and throw the black and white pans. I took some of my work with me to get best advice possible, as art supplies are extremely expensive here. They were impressed and said, if I got good enough to put my art in a contest, here in the uk ( at that time ) it would not be allowed to enter if B+W were used. I never have used black but have been guilty of a tiny high light in a birds eye with white before. A good lesson is to paint something lit by daylight that is black, draped material? making your own 'black' from mixes. A lesson on it would be very interesting. Sorry if you have covered this subject but I only just found your channel, new sub! Have a great day. Joanne.

Usually when I want white I wait for the paint to dry and add a little white gouache for the bright highlights. I guess since I've done oil and acrylic, adding white highlights is in my mindset. This usually works pretty well but I can see that you can get a completely different effect from it since I can't put watercolor over gouache, it's also always nice to know a new strategy for things, I'll keep the masking fluid in mind.

I was thinking about what you said about black and wanted to add that it's a very useful colour on it's own, and realized I only ever use black on it's own (as in not mixed with a blue or purple, mostly, sometimes other colours) if I paint a galaxy where I need some really deep dark spots. And I made that mistake so much when I was younger... now I don't discourage using it when my students want to, but I do insist they don't mix it in if they want to darken colour.

Icelle Anderson I don't think she meant to call them lazy in that sense but rather uninterested in what they were doing or learning. I remember being in an art class and being uninterested in learning because at the time it wasn't something that was interesting to me, it was just for a grade, so what I would do is just half ass it and ask the teacher if that was good enough as it was. Now I realize I could have learned so much more if I tried harder but my teacher was always trying to make me improve, I just wasn't interested in learning.

Yes. It takes a lot of practice and you have to think a lot differently than you would with other painting media.

Look, I think a lot of the viewers have had their feelings hurt about the current status of their painting and they are indignant to comments about "being lazy". I'm older and I know I'm feeling very vulnerable about the level of my painting ability right now, until I improve. If you're feeling vulnerable about your painting, please do not take it out on the teacher. I don't think we (beginners) realize just how much patience is involved with the many layers that have to be laid down and the consequent drying time that you have to wait out, to get professional results in water colour painting. I didn't and I'm still resisting the idea after a couple of years now. Kelly is pointing this out to you straight up. She probably wasn't ever as resistant to this amount of work and patience as most of us are. But if she didn't want to help us, she wouldn't have made this video. Also, I know that it was a revelation to me that 'extra' colours, other than the few, obvious ones you see when you look at something, were involved in painting. I never would have thought that blues, violets and reds were involved in painting ordinary, everyday objects that weren't 'blue', 'violet' and 'red', because I just couldn't see it. I think Kelly might be one of those rare people who can see more colours than we can. Believe me, such people exist and this has been scientifically proven. They have extra cones in their eye-stems. So please, just appreciate what you can learn from these videos and try to give people the benefit of the doubt. A little kindness and forgiveness goes a long way. Without it, the world can be a very cold and cruel place and we don't realize how much harm we can do to others' feelings. Thanks.

About the local colour mistake, i really don't know what additional colours to put. Mostly i see lighter or darker shades. But the top of the tree, how do we know we can put yellow or purple. Maybe because yellow is the washed out green. But where to put the darker and lighter green or even the brown for trunk? From drawingidiot

My dear Kelly, et al, there is an old saying, "Keep your eye upon the donut, not the hole." Those who were critical of the comment of "lazy student or lazy teacher" should give pause to reflect on their history in painting, & any effort they have made of teaching. But here's something that might be of help. There are 2 old time efforts that might help. !st just try squinting the eyes...really squinting. That limits the field of vision--good for quick study of values, & it isolates the basic color. Another is to make a pin old fist & use it as a viewfinder concentrated on the subject. & FINALLY, quote Degas, "LIE A LITTLE". It's very easy to add form, use a value deeper than the basic color if the artist is a colorist or add a small amount of pigment the opposite on the color wheel.---You my dear Kelly are very brave, & I suspect world weary, to add those negative comments. but why didn't the nay naysayers see the large % of good.? I'm 73, does that have something to do with my very large entry? All I can say is thank you! You go girl.

To all those people going nuts because the painter used the word "lazy": Get an effing grip. After you've done that, create something of similar value to mankind as this lady's excellent instructions. THEN, by all means, come back and complain about someone's choice of words on KZbin. Chances are, you won't feel the need to.

Novices may bring a lot of preconceptions into early attempts, and 'laziness' may just be a nervous inclination to substitute reflexive motions, instead of actions based on deliberation. Being in the moment is simply both making intentional marks, then paying attention to the result before proceeding. "Cause and effect" seems self-evident, yet it's amazing how many will fill a whole sheet with robotic motions, never stopping to attend to the consequences of each brushstroke. "Knowing" how to do something may be just as dangerous for experienced painters, as it replaces responding to observation with rote technical processes, producing dull or repetitive works. Every pigment is imperfect, and behaves uniquely; I think of blacks as very poor mixes with limited uses; they contaminate and deaden other colors, and unless you're including objects like signs, which may have black lettering, mixing complements for darks is much richer and more interesting.

Thank you so much for tips and advice! Yes - the black colour as shading - well, that was one of my first mistakes. I had finally managed to draw a face with right proportions.. eyes, lips, nose... yep, finally I got it! Lets add colours... that turned out quite well too. That was until I wanted to darken the area of one eye, as I wanted light to come from one side, so I needed shades on the other side of the face. Yup. Grabbed the black one. After a few minutes, the pretty face on the paper had become a vampire, or just a very creepy person, lol. Lesson learned I guess ;)

Great advices ^^ But for the white part you can either use masking fluid or add the white at the end with white gouache or white acrylic. There is no shame in mixing media ^^ Also do you only paint from photo or real life thing ? Do you sometimes create something from imagination ?
@SoshiNine9
@SoshiNine9 10 жыл бұрын
Before finding out about masking fluid I would try to use tape to help cover up areas that I wanted to keep white. However, tape wouldn't work well for curved areas like the marble and sometimes when taking it off I would accidentally rip the paper. Thanks! This helped a lot.
