Very well explained. A lot of people are so busy learning advanced salsa patterns that they forget how truly important it is to do things right and especially the basic, 'cause, you know, that's the basic step. If you don't know how to do it right, you can barely understand the more advanced patterns you're trying to learn. In my opinion, you can tell a lot about someone's skills and understanding of salsa by just watching them do the basic step.

@dancedojo I have a question. I've been dancing on 1 for two years now. I'm pretty good at it. I'm currently learning on 2 since most women prefer on2. But I'm so confused on the shines. my question is : As a lead dancing with a partner, should I do my shines on the lead's timing or the follow timing? if it's a personal choice, what's the most common one the lead use? thank you
@thedancedojo2 жыл бұрын
Great question Emmanuel! My understanding is that once you let go of your partner to do shines you are free to step on any count you like as long as you get back to your timing when returning to partnerwork. You can dance on any timing, any count, total freedom. Do what's most confortable to you. Hope that helps! -Robin

This is a great tip! But i'm wondering how to keep small steps while doing this?
@thedancedojo6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jessica thanks for watching! What is your doubt about small steps? You can still pass over the middle even if you take small steps, it just won't be as pronounced - it's just a mini version of what you see in the video. When you have lots of space you can take big steps and when you don't you have to take small steps, but the concept remains the same. Does that answer your question?

Great Channel! Need advice! I'Ive tried both on1 and on2-- I find I MUCH prefer to dance ON1. Im 100% comfortable dancing on 1 and 70% on 2. Sometimes when I dance on 2 I feel lost in the music and not in a good way....I just don't enjoy it, unless the song is CLEARLY a clean mambo song. Should I keep studying on 2 until 100% comfortable or just concentrate my energies on doing on1? Is is possible to be awesome @ both? Thank you guys and keep up the good work!
@thedancedojo6 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks Jack! It's natural to have a preference for one or the other, especially if you started with one and are finding it trickier to switch to the other timing. It's normal to feel lost or confused during the transition, so don't sweat that at all! I won't tell you what to do, but I will tell you it's completely possible to be awesome and fluent in both On1 and On2, enjoy both, and not get lost. Our approach is to always keep expanding what we know and enjoy as much as possible :) We offer a mini On1 to On2 conversion series that explains the differences in timing, steps and instrumentation between the two timings. Maybe you'll find it helpful. You can check it out here: thedancedojo.com/product/salsa-on1-to-on2-conversion/ We also have an article that discusses the differences between the two timings here: thedancedojo.com/blog/salsa-timing-the-difference-between-salsa-on1-and-on2/

So all of the steps are on place except for 3 and 7?
@thedancedojo2 жыл бұрын
In this video they're not doing a basic in place, they're moving forward and backward so i don't understand your question. Can you rephrase or send a timestamp to the part you're referring to?
@TravelWithPreston2 жыл бұрын
@@thedancedojo so for example, I would step 1 and 2 as normal but 3 is placed further back (as opposed to coming back to the starting position). And similarly, 5 and 6 are done as normal but 7 comes forward. Hope this makes sense?
@thedancedojo2 жыл бұрын
@@TravelWithPreston yup, exactly like you saw in the video, just pass through the middle a little bit to nake your movement more perpetual instead of go go stop
@TravelWithPreston2 жыл бұрын
@@thedancedojo Much appreciated! I'm having an issue though. I practice in front of the mirror and doing the first sequence of 1-8 is fine; but when I go for the 2nd sequence, i'm a bit closer to the mirror this time. If I keep repeating the sequence I'll be positioned a lot more forward in the room as opposed to where I initially started. Really not sure where I'm going wrong!
@thedancedojo2 жыл бұрын
@@TravelWithPreston put tape on the floor or something to give yourself a boundary. or turn sideways and look in the mirror to see which step you're moving forward on. with practice you'll gain awareness. film yourself too

Hi Krishna! What you see here is linear style or "cross body lead" style salsa On1 and On2. People often refer to the linear On1 style as "LA style" and the linear On2 style as "New York style".

Hey Frank, it's hard to know what you're doing without seeing you. When you dance On2 you step to the same counts as On1 you just do your break steps on 2 and 6 (instead of 1 and 5). We explain it in deep detail in our online course if you're interested: thedancedojo.com
