Hi Terry, here in Oregon we recently did a full weekend of pine grafting, but also during the warmup did some juniper grafts just to sharpen (pun intended, I guess) our skills. Some notes to add to your video which my mentor included in his discussion: First, moreso with pine (esp. if not cold enough to arrest sap flow), but also to a degree with juniper, as soon as the scion is cut, we start a (mental) clock of for pine 10 or 15 seconds, and for juniper only a little longer than that. Within this time window, we try to cut into the host tree and insert the scion as quickly and gracefully as possible. Second, once it is in there, we try not to move it at all once we've pushed it in all the way, and make sure not to squeeze while holding it in place and preparing the wrapping tape. Third, we try to align the scion more towards one of the two outer edges of the host slit, as this increases the surface area of overlapping cambium, giving you both contact somewhere along the side cambium in addition to the inevitable top-most contact. Fourth, the wrapping of the graft site is tight, but not too tight. Fifth, when cutting the scions, while we can use grafting knives, a good option for many people is a fresh razor blade pushed along with the thumbs, with the scion placed on a small wooden block to elevate it slightly. This ensures that you can achieve a better angle with your hands placed on the table. Razor blades accumulate cruft and dull pretty quickly, so we try to never use the same location on a razor blade more than once or twice, and once the razor blade is used up, it can be discarded or recycled for non-grafting uses. Last but not least, we do a long practice session on lower-value material ahead of time (so it's useful to have a couple large bushy junipers around for this) before proceeding to the high value stuff. I'm sure you're familiar with the effect of "the first one I did wasn't so great but the last few were perfect", a warmup session can help make graft 1 better. Few if any graft continuously enough through the year to be really surigcal at this. Thanks for the video Terry, greetings from Oregon.

Nice vid, useful tips ... would like to see more about after care. That seems to be where people run into the most trouble ... grafts look great, start pushing tips and unwrap just a slight to much the scion dries and dies. So tricky that balancing act.

Actually if you are using parafilm you need not unwrap anything as the foliage can push through it. If you are using a bag method then your comment is certainly applicable as opening the bag too much too quickly results in a rapid drop in humidity and the scion can dessicate under that condition.

Excellent! Terry, a couple of questions. What about using rooting hormone on the cuts, and what is the best time of year for this procedure (is this dependent on species)?

Hi Victor. Thanks for the questions. The idea of rooting hormone will not work as you’re not trying to generate roots, just fusion of live veins. I do define and explain the ideal time to do this in the video, please watch it again.

Hi Terry, thanks for another super video. If you ask me, it failed because of the direction of the tape. It must hold the water outside, but if you turn them upside down, the water can get in. Soooo ….. The tape should be rolled on the craft form the future lowest end agains the highest end. In other words … depending on the placement, the tape may be rolled on from the top or the stock end. Pls. try again, and us see the result 🌳😎

Interesting idea. The tape is wound from the wedge end of the scion to the foliage. The mistake I must have made was that the overlap of the tape was not wide enough and/or there were gaps between the surfaces of the tape rotations. So next time I intend to overlap the tape more and also try ensure there are no gaps. Of course the tape securing the scion onto the understock also needs to be sealed so water cannot enter.

Great idea to graft however I would not suggest grafting multiple varieties onto the same root stock. It will look like a Christmas tree 😉

Nice video Terry! If i tried to graft a pine, can i do it at the same time of the year (in the begining of the growin season)? A have a nother question out of the topic, jaja. Do you have any experience making airlayers on junipers, it is possible??

Yes, absolutely! You need to use "dormant" scions so you might consider even cutting the scions a couple weeks before grafting and storing them in the fridge in a bag, allowing the understock to become active - and then grafting. I have not air layered junipers not, but you certainly can.

I don’t personally but I’ve seen it done a lot in Japan. Approach graft on the branches. Not sure about scion on branch ends.

Bonjour Terry, J'ai entendu dire par un bonsaika japonais que les greffons dirigés vers le bas prennent plus difficilement que ceux placés horizontalement et verticalement. Il conseillait donc de bouger régulièrement le pot afin que ces greffons se retrouvent d'une façon régulière en position horizontale ou verticale. Personnellement je n'ai pas essayé. A toutes fins utiles. Merci pour cette vidéo très instructive.

Yes you do get wider parafilm, however this width is well suited. If you like, try the wider one and let me know if you find it works better though.

I live in USA Florida. When is the best time for grafting my juniper or other trees?

mmmm Florida I am not sure as its tropical so i doubt your trees ever go trully dormant right? Essentially you need to graft when sapflow is at its lowest/weakest. Usually this is very early spring.

Personally no, but I know someone locally who is trying to graft Japanese black pine onto local pines. I get the impression that the results are very unpredictable.

@@TerryErasmusbonsai Thays what o thought. I’m relatively new to the Japanese pines but I love the challenge. I get a lot of good info from your videos. My only major challenge is that I’m in Indonesia and it’s tropical. But my trees thrive on the year around growing season.
