Juniper scion grafting with Mark Polson

Mark Polson, a bonsai artist based in Cape Town, South Africa has a passion for Junipers. He has some of the most impressive Junipers which I have seen locally and part of his success is due to his ability to graft. He kindly led a workshop recently on this invaluable skill, hosted by Oyama Bonsai Kai. Wow this is great. What is the rootstock that needs to be used? Is it the same for all junipers?

Thanks! It just needs to be a juniperus root stock. Then you can use any juniperus scion to graft to it.

Scion grafts - best time is very early spring usually.

Yes. Very early spring when the plant is just staring to wake up (ie green tips on the foliage)

Nice grafting demonstration. Thank you for posting another nice video. Adding a tag of what’s been grafted can be helpful especially for those who have substantial collections. I’d be curious to know if and when you unravel the tape or if you let the buds simply push the tape off. Thank you again, Mats

I think it grows through the grafting tape.

If you use Parafilm it will perish and will practically fall off itself. If you use plastrip or similar then you will need to cut it off when the tape starts to choke the graft.
