It's great that he's not trying to show his improvisation skills off but to show which scale we need to use along the track.

Hey mate, nice lesson! Try putting a b7 after your last b min, that’ll set you up with some nice tension before you come ‘round to the g maj7 again, could make it a b7 alt if you like!

The way the loop of the chords are slowed down like how you have it playing sounds a lot like “Blue in Green” Love it! Thank you for the breakdown!

I love the way it sounds, but theoretically, shouldn’t the MM scale choice for the non-resolving F#7th be Db (the Lydian Dominant mode)? Or am I missing something. Not that rules aren’t made to be broken, ESPECIALLY in jazz, but I’ve always heard that non-resolving dominants should be treated with the MM scale a 5th away from the root. Thanks!

Thanks for you comment! This tune is in Bm key so F#7 most of the times is altered like in most of the minor key tunes. Lydian dom would work better and its used in most cases as secondary dominant. Its just more comon choice but you can use three different MM over Dominant chord im not talking about Alt Dom. Make sence ?

Ed Arm sort of, yes. The fact that the tune is in Bm and so, it’s 5th (F#) can (should!) be altered etc make sense. But it’s just interesting that that 1st F#7 doesn’t resolve to Bm, but goes to Em7 and a II V I in Dmaj and yet the altered scale really works over it is interesting and NOT something I’ve seen before (I don’t think.)

For what it’s worth, your Melodic Minor vids have really helped me! I’m in the thrall of MM and am spellbound by its mystique and mysterious sound, but am still struggling to get it into my playing in a melodic and musical way. It’s hard! I hope you’ll make more MM lessons! Perhaps one on Lydian Dominant? Thanks! -JGC

@@JGCanning it does sound nice when you use the lydian dominant there as an extra spice in your playing.

@@JGCanning also try C MM over the first f#7 alt and it'll sound as though you're intentionally telegraphing your resolution to Em

What I like to do sometimes is play an Emaj7 instead of the F#al ... very cool effect!

Is Emaj7 Lydian b5 due to the melody?
