@@BryanRoupe Hi it depends how you use it, this is a tuned LCR circuit with the inductance of the speaker coil, tuned to flatten the resonant peak at a frequency slightly higher than the bass frequency. This has the effect of extending the -3dB point down a few Hz. Your welcome.

It will sound the same without both the resistor and the capacitor. You did not show how it sounded before adding the resistor. What the resistor did was to reduce output to the speaker. The capacitor just nullified the effect of the resistor. This is deceiving!

You get the distortion because the speaker is not abel to hold more bass, but with other speaker that is made to hold more bass than you will not have that problem.
