Amanda, Both methods are correct. Don't believe anyone who preaches there is only one method to pitch. The closing of the hips is a method I started pitching with many years ago and was very successful. Closing hips for a drop is an advantage to help get your weight forward and generate power out of your hips. Staying open at release as you are describing is a later development. I have been coaching pitchers for 25 years and learned the open delivery from Michele Smith's former pitching coach. It is an advantage for rise ball pitchers because it helps you keep your weight back to get lift. It's not a good method for the drop or the curve since it is advisable to get your hip out of the way before you snap across your body. I advise learning to be more flexible and learn to stay open for rise ball and fastball, close for drop and twist your hips for the curve.
