I never thought of using plants to distract from a view rather than just planning a tall green screen to block it. This technique is great because it gives an immediate affect while the screening trees will take years to grow tall enough to block the view. I have another tool in my aresenol, thanks Lee!

I really enjoy your videos. Any advice for planting an exposed garden? I don't want to spoil the rural Scottish view with high wind break hedges. Any herbaceous plants that will thrive in very strong winds and clay soil? Thanks

I prefer to plant in the evening if I’m planting when the temperatures are higher, it gives the plants 12+ hours to rest and start getting adjusted to their new space. I’ll also use my market umbrella to provide shade if the plants are short enough to fit under it.

Thank you for another fab video! Please could you make a video on how to use an electric propagator to grow flowers from seed? Trying to grow campanula seeds into seedlings. Been nearly 4 weeks in the propagator & no sign of growth! Not sure what I'm doing wrong! Thanks once again for the wonderful videos. Nick, Newcastle xxx
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick. As with most herbaceous plants. Germination can be erratic and slow. Campanulas can take upto 8 weeks. I never use electric propagators I’m a bit old school. However if they’re being kept at around 18 degrees either in the propagator or inside the home they should germinate. Most issues with growing seed come from two mistakes. 1-Sowing too deep / over covering. 2- Overwatering. I’d give them another couple of weeks. Don’t keep them saturated with water either. They should germinate. Maybe start some more if you have any now just in a seed tray inside. The seeds are tiny so a very light covering or vermiculite may help. Hope that’s of use! Happy Gardening.

I've just bought some pleached photinia to use as a screen from neighbours. Can I plant them into larger pots and if I can do they need staking? My garden is all paved. Thanks 😊
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nikki. Eventually they will either need to go into the ground or a large raised bed. I’m the summer in pots you’ll be watering them most days and then I’m the winter the wind could blow them over. Tying them to a frame would be helpful to prevent this! Good luck and happy planting. 🥷🌿👍 Lee

Do we get hedging or shurbs in the inside of our 1 meter fence? Seems a bit pointless getting say, Privett against a fence. I think shurbs will work out cheaper. What shrubs make for good screenings

Hi quick question what height do these acer trees get to? i have a new house and would like some idea of trees that would be ok for a small to medium sized garden. I want to try and create agarden at the very rear end in front of wooden fence , and want to attract bird life. Hope this makes sense thank you. weather looks great . Thanks kevin .
@Gardenninja
@Gardenninja 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin. They’re grafted so shouldn’t get much taller but the crown of the tree (top bit) will bush out. So it’s really about how much you want to keep it in check. It will probably put another 2 ft on if left but if you keep them pruned each year or so they keep their current stature. If you’re looking for birds in particular maybe choose a mix with some trees to at produce fruit or berries. Rowan are great small trees with berries for birds and great autumn colour. Hope that helps. Lee

Garden Ninja Ltd thank you, my neighbour at the bottom of my garden has just removed several conifers and it means I have lost a lot of privacy. The garden isn’t very long so I need something that will block the view but also not take up a lot of room at a lower level if that makes sense

Hi GA. well yes I can’t do anything to remove that no matter what plants or screen you try and use. You’d cause more shade and harm. However the guide is showing you how with careful plants you can break up and distract from a view. Building fences higher and higher is never the answer. But careful border design is!
