Is C.A.T. some sort of Canadian secret ? The first time Jon from The Strength Guys put C.A.T Back Squats on my program I had no idea what he was talking about. Obviously, I borrowed the neighbors Cat and repped out that little fur ball.

I just started implementing this routine into my weekly training. On the first day I forgot to use only 65 percent and did almost 80 instead and I just about passed out! The 65 percent work weight feels great, it will take me some time to build the explosiveness because I have never been that explosive as an athlete. I feel really great so far and in the next 5-6 weeks I look forward to testing out my 80 percent max and see what I can do. Also, people at the gym check me out when I squat now, because none else seems as energetic to do it I guess. Thank you Men for this great routine.

Thank you for asking! It went well for about four weeks, the speed of the squat was getting faster and faster. However, some lifestyle factors got in the way of my training, and I never completed the final week, to test my new PR weight. I am currently using the Texas Method implemented by Mark Rippetoe to increase the squat and press over 10-12 weeks or till the weight stops increasing. I finished the first week last night, the power cleans in the program are new to me, so I am starting fairly light with those. I look forward to how this works out.

i fucking love this, thankyou. This is how I squat. A random man actually approached me and told me not to be so fast and to slow down on my ascent from the hole because it would hurt my bum. I asked him if he was a powerlifter or sports physio or even pt and he said no but he had been training at the gym for years. I don't know why but I knew that if I had balls and a dick, he would have not approached me. It pisses me off because I study my form conscientiously and record a form check all the time. I am always looking forward to improving my squat but I hate it when someone thinks its okay to perpetuate their own ideas when they're not even experts.

Shouldn't you just always do this? I mean don't get me wrong it makes sense but the more force you can use in your lifts the more weight you are going to move. Or am I missing something?

the more power you use. yeh seems pretty obvious to me as well. but I guess it's *really focussing* on the speed throughout the entire movement. And using loads 60-80% I think he said.
@timfosho
@timfosho 10 жыл бұрын
The difference is the overall progression and its focus. In 'regular' training you might do your lighter sets like this and then move onto heavier ones, Increasing intensity while decreasing volume and speed. Whereas for CAT, you would ONLY do sets that you can accelerate like this, ie 65 - 70% of 1rm, maintaining speed and volume throughout, and decreasing wait intervals for progressive overload.

Thank you soo much! Been doing quite a bit of research on how to increase my squat. My dead lift, bench, and OHP have been increasing except for my squat, and I squat twice a week. Monday I perform high bar back squat with a wider stance than Olympic and Friday I concentrate on front squat and cleans. I will try this in hopes to get stronger! Thanks you!

I didn't read all of the comments, but I believe that Fred Hatfield (Dr. Squat) came up with this term, or at least made it popular. I doubt he was the first person to ever think of it, but he wrote about it a lot. So he should probably get credited in some way. Great for Bench Press too. It's like a poor man's bands or chains.

@timothysnow5
@timothysnow5 9 жыл бұрын
HasNi Hassaan the purpose is to move a light to moderate weight as fast as you can in order to train your central nervous system. Do not hyper-extend your knees. Try to focus on moving quickly from your hips instead of your knees and that should help to not hyper-extend the knees. You can also use it for dead lifts instead of squats and you will still have a lot of carry over to your squat

I had the same questions in mind. I know multiple instances where people do heavy leg press. They locked their knees at the end of each rep and SNAP. Leg broke like a stick.
@atrumpetwillsound
@atrumpetwillsound 7 жыл бұрын
No, it isn't safe. It's just going to mash up the soft parts that are surrounded by the muscle and between the bones. The actual idea is good, just the locking out is bad.

Interesting video. I'll definitely try this. Problem is, though, the guy is not squatting. Those were nowhere near parallel. His stance is a bit wide, though, which will make that more difficult.

Aren't bands anchored from the floor (and chains) going to do the same thing? Provide accommodating resistance as the movement gets easier requiring greater force output through what would have been the deceleration phase.

If you straighten your knees at the top you hyperextend your patellar tendon. The patellar tendon is usually the area you complain about knee pain.

TheBearcatProduction hyperextend the knee* damaging the patellar tendon. i would imagine ligaments would be much more vulnerable in this situation. I've heard people say hyperextend tendons before and its pretty weird haha. also i have only ever seen 1 case of paratenonitis of a patellar tendon in my life. people must have very different habits where you live.,

Seems like a awesome method to use! How much rest time in between sets did you start off and finish with. I was thinking 9 minutes for the first week then taking off a minute each week. Would that be ok? I want to make sure that I stay as explosive as possible like you said while performing each set and rep!

Im running the texas method & would love to work in some CAT stuff, but im curious as to where would be the best option: I've got a Monday 5x5 routine going on already thats focused on the volume itself primarily, and then an intensity day where ill go for a 5rm squat. Am i better off accelerating the living shit out of my monday sets or alternating my friday 5rms with, say, 5 singles at ~70%, and focusing on the acceleration component as the primary factor to progress? Trying not to change too much as its working quite well, but i think small tweaks could do good :)
