This will save you tons of sanding and solve other problems. CA glue goes everywhere, soaks into grain and seals the wood against finishes.Epoxy won't spread but also seals the grain. Shoot. couple of coats of shellac on the wood before you begin working with the inlay and let it dry before you begin the inlay. Shellac is compatible with all other finishes.

I think vibrating the shell into place would give a more controlled uniform appearance and minimize touch up.

It will also make it so it's not clear. The baking soda will make the glue opaque and u wont see that MOP

I would go with a clear epoxy resin if you are going to use lacquer clear coats. CA glues do not work well with with lacquer finishes and will cause a cloudy finish.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) put on top of the CA glue will harden it instantly.

Be aware that MOP dust is toxic! DO not breathe in and use a mask if working with sanding it. The same goes for Bone.
@Culturedropout
@Culturedropout 4 жыл бұрын
Toxic? Or an irritant like silica and asbestos? I can't find anything about it being toxic; it's apparently used in keys and cases for musical instruments, and even eating utensils, so it doesn't seem like it could be toxic. Not being pedantic; just want to know what I'm dealing with.

thank you for the tips,, i have a question will this also work on flat stone carvings as it seems to on wood?
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 2 жыл бұрын
It should work as long as the adhesive will stick to the stone you are working with. Usually an epoxy might work better with stones. Just mix the mother of pearl with some epoxy and spatula it into the grooves. When it dries you can sand off the excess.

Do you think using a vibration or ultrasonic table would help those particals settle into the compartments more easily?
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 2 жыл бұрын
The material seems to settle pretty well by hand, but yes, I am sure vibrating the project would work as well.

Which brand epoxy do you recomend in reference to curve object using turquoise crush stone. Is there a Ca glue part thin and thick medium velocity so to speak.Need glue that will soak into the stone but yet not spread all over the place or run around the wood piece. Thanks.
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 4 жыл бұрын
Great questions. We really like the System 3 epoxy if you wanted to mix the crushed material into a paste. We have it in both a 5 minute and an overnight cure. Here is a link treelineusa.com/shop-supplies/adhesives-and-epoxy-putty/ That link will also show you some other CA glues like the Super T that has a medium viscosity and the Special T that has a really thick viscosity. It will not run as much, but they will not soak through the material as well as the Original or Thin CA glue. I hope that helps. Feel free to give us a call if you need specific recommendations.

Hey Robert! We used what is called a Flexible Drum Sander. It is a mandrel that attaches to a motor and than has foam sleeves with different grits of sandpaper. Here is a link if you wanted to learn more about it. www.treelineusa.com/sanding/flex-drum-sander

I am using a piece of pine and carved out a small design in it.... i want to stain the pine a dark brown color, but i would like the inlay to be this crushed stone..... Would i add the crushed stone inlay first, then sand, then add my brown stain? How does wood stain interact with the crushed powder? Would it dark it? Also, i imagine polyurethaning over the entire piece isn't a problem right?
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 6 жыл бұрын
Hello. Great questions. The very best way to be sure is to experiment a little on a scrap piece of wood. This way you can make sure nothing gets messed up. I would add you pre-stain first as this will create somewhat of a barrier on the surface of the wood so the glue does not absorb into an area that will be stained. Once the glue is cured it is just like plastic. As long as you don't have any pits in the inlay area the stain should not absorb into the stone. A polyurethane finish over the top should also work just fine. Experiment first!!

I’ve tried 3 inlays with the mother of pearl I got from you guys. I’m using walnut and the problem I’m having is brown spots on the inlay after sanding it down. Almost looks like sawdust trapped in there. Any suggestions on how to remedy this would be greatly appreciated.
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 3 жыл бұрын
Great comment! Sometimes there can be some pitting or small bubbles in the inlay. They are exposed after you start sanding. You can use compressed air to blow out the dust and use more of the thin CA glue to fill in the voids or you can use a thicker CA glue to act as a sealer coat. Feel free to give us a call and we might be able to get some pictures of your projects to give you more specific feedback.

I would like to add mother of pearl to an already finished wood box that has been carved. Is it possible to just dab the powder and glue in so as to not have to sand it down? Is this a REALLY bad idea?
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 5 жыл бұрын
Great question! I would certainly recommend you test it out on a scrap piece of wood to make sure you like the results. Generally people have like the looks of the sanded mother of pearl because I think it helps it to shine a little better. If you were planning on not sanding you would need to be extra careful not to let the glue spill out side your area (maybe use painters tape). Send pictures when you can!

I live in Brazil and don't have access to the materials you point out in this work. What exactly is this CA glue? Is it similar to "Super Bond"?
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 6 жыл бұрын
CA glue stands for Cyanoacrylate glue. Some people call it super glue or crazy glue. If you have a home improvement store or hardware store in your area the is a good chance you will find some there. Ideally, you will want to use a type of CA glue that is really runny (like water) so it will soak into your inlay materials. I hope this helps.

I have Mother of pearl but it's in a flake form?? I noticed what you have is different and probably easier to work. Suggestions please, Phil
@treelineusa
@treelineusa 2 жыл бұрын
The nice thing about Mother of Pearl is that it is so soft and easy to crush if needed. Yes, the Mother of Pearl Treeline carries is quite granular and easy to work into cracks and voids. Depending on your project, you could either crush up the flaked MOP you already have or you could get some of our crushed MOP. You are welcome to give us a call and we could offer more specific advice based on your projects. 1.800.598.2743

Why crushed? It looks like any other white sand or pigment. Does the iridescence come through?

Usually applying the stain first is better. Sometimes if your glue spills onto the wood, the stain will not soak into those areas.
