For some reason I only ever sewed 1 row of basting stitches. (???) Turns out, 2 IS WAY BETTER! Thank you! 💖

I have found that using a really long basting stitch to ease the sleeve cap doesnt work well sometimes, particularly on tightly woven fabrics. So I loosen the tension a bit, testing on a scrap, to make sure I can easily pull the bobbin thread. Then I use a stitch thats about 3.5 mm to sew my ease stitching instead of the maximum stitch length. This makes smaller "waves" in the fabric, making it easier to adjust out any puckers. This works well for me.

That’s great to hear! I know all machines & fabrics need that little bit of personal tweak. That’s great you found what works for you. That’s one of the things I love about sewing, always something new to learn & so many ways to do the same thing. It’s such a personal journey. 💕

Hi im about to insert sleeves for the first time today. Also a first is using Ponte Roma fabric (only ever sewn with cotton) ive been feeling so daunted by this. I now feel a little better about it. Ive also got to sew in a funnel neck too 😮 im very much a beginner at sewing may i say. I had to alter this basic pattern as no notches or anything to guide also grade down from a UK 16 top to a 10/12 bottom half. It looks a bit of a car wreck so far but have taken photos so i can use the pattern again before cutting off the excess and making notes. Really hoping i can do this as special occasion dress. Wish me luck please. Your tutorial has helped immensely for me to make sense of things. Thank you ❤

Thank you for giving good details in this tutorial. You said sew 1 line at 1/2" and 1 at 1/4". When you demonstrated the sewing, it looked wider than that. Was your first at 1/2" and then the other one was on the inside and that one was 1/4" from the first. I think I did the opposite.

I'm sewing in a gathered sleeve. I have had to take it off once already. When it was on I found there wasn't a lot of movement in the arm. By that I mean when I lifted my arm up the whole torso would lift. I don't know how normal this is but, how to you go about fixing this? If you have any advice I'd love to hear. Thanks.

Walk your patterns and see how much extra you have in the sleeve. 1-2 inches is what you are looking for.

I appreciate this video so much 😭❤️ , I was just wondering why do we have to make the arm bigger and then reduce its size with the basting stitch?
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia 2 жыл бұрын
So that your arm can move in the sleeve. It creates a sleeve cap - the area at the top of your shoulder. It creates a round shape for your shoulder/arm. If you sewed it in with no ease it would be flat at the top & not fit your arm.

My basting stitches left holes in the fabric, do I need to use a thinner needle and thread?
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia Жыл бұрын
If you are using soft fabric be sure to seam rip out the basting & do not pull them out. Pulling them out can damage your fabrics. But if there are holes there form basting & you didn’t damage your fabric they will go away if you spray it with water or wash it.

My back seam btwn cap and underarm fits well, but the front seam between notch and cap has an inch too much and needs to be gathered to fit, is this normal or are sleeves on backwards?
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia Жыл бұрын
You should have between 1-2 inches of ease in the sleeve cap for movement. You should not have gathers though.
@rubyre-dooz1519
@rubyre-dooz1519 Жыл бұрын
Guess what? I had them on backwards, double notch was pinned to the front. Now there is less to ease fit.🙄
