Though you were going to show how to use a 3 wire on 4 wire appliances
@fredsapplianceacademy6 күн бұрын
Most appliances are set up for 3 wire install. However, if the appliance is set up for a 4 wire install it may be intended for 4 wire only. Not that it cant be done but it might require some altering of the appliance which would be unnecessary as you could just buy a 4 wire cord.

@@fredsapplianceacademy thanks for your quick response. I have a 3prong outlet and was looking for the hack to install it on a new dryer that is made for the 4wire so I don't need an electrician to rewire my older outlet
@fredsapplianceacademy5 күн бұрын
@@JoeHall-c9f Okay, we hear ya. all you really need to do is make sure the grounding strap or wire is attached to the neutral on the terminal block and then attaches to the ground or cabinet of the dryer. After that simply install the 3 wire cord just like you saw in the video and you are good to go. We hope that helps!

Due to many wondering if the small wire connection instructions are correct: The small white or the green with the yellow stripe is the connection/jumper between the center neutral lug and the frame on 3 wire cords only. With a four wire cable you must not use that connection so the wire is put under the neutral screw to hold it out of the way. It is just connected to itself inside the unit. All other green wires connect to the metal cabinet frame.

Thanks for this explanation. My wire is green with yellow stripe and all the examples on line show it as white. Kenmore shouldn't have used a green color when in reality it's neutral. And I know this to be true from the diagram on back of the unit too.

Thank you so much for the video! I understand that the center cord on the three prong is neutral and will always be neutral. However, when it comes to line one and line two I'm not sure which is which. If you flip the cord the other way, the center is always going to be neutral no matter which way you're holding it. But l1 and l2 are going to be in different positions depending on how you're holding the cord. Is there way to know what's the proper way it should be facing? I'm thinking the flat side of the connection should be facing away from you where the center of the crimp should be facing you. Is that correct??

@larrywhited30702 жыл бұрын
Both legs each provide 120 VAC, but consider one to be plus 120 volts and one to be minus 120 volts (alternating current, so the + & - are constantly alternating). Across these two 120 legs you therefore get the 240 VAC for the heating elements, with only one of these 120 VAC legs then also providing power to the motor. Your dryer doesn't care if line 1 is powering your motor, or if line 2 is. Also, the dryer doesn't care if it gets its 240 volts for the heating element from line 1 to line 2, or from line 2 to line 1. The current is constantly alternating. VAC = Volts Alternating Current.

This helped me out a lot but now I don’t know what to do with the wire cover plate. When I had the three wire on there it was fire and it just went underneath it but with the larger four wire cable it doesn’t fit. Unlike the one shown in the video where the cover panel doesn’t go over where the cord goes into mine does.
@fredsapplianceacademy3 жыл бұрын
It almost sounds like for some reason the unit was not designed to take a 4 wire cord. But, off the top of my head, I am not sure what type of unit that would be. If it doesn't fit DO NOT force it. Also, make sure you are not installing a range cord that will be larger in gauge making it difficult to install. The cover plate must go on! If the unit will not accept the 4 wire cord install a 3 wire per the video and make sure the cover is put on.

So, on the 3 wire connection, the neutral wire is the only wire that has a specific place? And the other two wires can go to either side?
@larrywhited30702 жыл бұрын
The neutral wire (the center wire on a flat 3-wire cord, likely labeled neutral on newer cords) MUST go the neutral terminal, which is the center, silver terminal. The 2 "outside" wires on the flat 3-wire cord can (Edit: separately, of course, and NEVER hooked together) go to either side on the terminal block.

What size nut driver is needed for the green screw..I know it was 5/16 but when I try to purchase one it also has another measurement with it
@fredsapplianceacademy3 жыл бұрын
The screw should take just a standard 5/16" nut driver. Often they come in multi-packs which is usually the best deal. If you are using a socket wrench I would suggest a 1/4" wrench be used to avoid stripping the screw out.
