Hey Michael, thanks again for another great video, lots of gold here. Had pretty much settled for the carbon winch and then re-watched your video. Convinced it is the right choice now. Have done a lot of reading about warranties too, and they are not all the same despite saying they have 5 years. Carbon have the best warranty but they do say "Winches must always be fitted by a competent person skilled in winch installation". Not sure how to define competent and skilled in winch installation but it certainly doesn't seem like rocket science.

Bro, I enjoy watching your videos and really enjoy how you Aussie’s do things verse Our way of doing things here in swamps of Louisiana!! Honestly this video was painful to watch because you had to disassemble and what we call basically rigging it up to work the way you wanted. Glad in the end you got it done.! Also apparently you Aussie’s use brands of winches I’ve never seen or heard of. What about Warn winches, badlands ( sometimes crap), RCX ect. Plus here in South Louisiana in our wonderful Gumbo Mud our grills and frontend bull bars ect, have mounting plates higher up and easily accessible. Also mostly use cable as well. Yes we for most part do things more dangerous and possibly deadly without a second thought. So I respect all your intel and instructions on Safety. Good job Bro

Usually the reason people leave the cable attached to the recovery point is that the steel hook can damage the alloy fairlead, leaving little burrs that cut the rope. You can avoid it with a nylon ring behind the hook, or a hook designed to lay flat with rubber or nylon pads (like factor 55).

Do you not fit a cut off switch on the positive battery cable, the closer closer to the battery the better. (like on earth moving equipment) I fit them for safety reasons and then cut the power to the winch when not in use. I have had it where the winch started winching while I was driving, of cause with my luck it started wincing in and not out, must have been the wireless receiver giving it a signal to winch, end of the winch cable was hooked to the chassis, it bent my ARB bar before burning out. Be carefull.

Yes you can take more risks if you have a winch. I but another rope at an auction because it was cheap so carry the other as an extension if needed to reach a far anchor point. Never used it but you never know. Duty cycling was a good tip.
@greebo78575 жыл бұрын
Re the hook onto the recovery point. Here in Vic, particularly the high country, you may find that you can't get out of the seat and you need a mate to run your winch out. The hook is no bloody use if it's in a drawer you can't get at. Also, if you are stuck in the mud here you aren't going to care that the hook is in mud. You are going to get covered in the stuff anyway. I put my hook and rear tow hitch away when I'm home. I put them back o0n the car when I air down.
@theeaglegaming28115 жыл бұрын
People often attach their hook up to their recovery points (usually when they have a higher mounted recovery point) so that when they're driving around, the hook doesn't swing around and bugger up your paint.

Where have you hooked the negative up to? On the ranger/bt50 your negatives need to be connected after the shunt not directly to the battery. This is so your smart alternator can measure the load and compensate accordingly.

I remember as a young bloke having an issue with the switch gear on my winch on my old 1976 Nissan patrol , at the time i was whizzing down a bit of single lane road in heavy fast moving traffic with no where to stop without causing an accident I did have a cut off switch next to the battery . anyway , the winch decided to start itself up while i was driving along and proceeded to crush the bull bar like the hulk as i had the cable through the pipework and running back to the bar. Unfortunately for my poor placement of the cut off , the winch running at full tilt mangled the bar until it could no longer run then due to the massive amps it was drawing proceeded to cook the insulation off the wiring . by the time i managed to pull over and lift up the seat to where my battery was situated , it had gotten so hot on wiring it was close to catching fire but the led post on the battery melted completely off and that was the end of the crisis . I was a bit lucky i guess . If i was mounting another winch that safety cut of would be where i could get at it quick smart , in fact i might even have two , one in the cab and one in the easy to reach vicinity of the winch . if things go bad , and they do on occasion go bad , it is good to have a plan B . Keep up the good work .
@steiny33535 жыл бұрын
Geez mate, you do great videos. That narrow gap where the winch cable comes out of, does, or can, that cause a problem with rubbing, especially in the situation with the Ranger, where the other car on the hill was pulling on a severe downward angle ?

Thank you for all the great videos. I really enjoy watching your content. How is the winch holding up? I Am looking at installing a which on my Ranger. Would you buy another Carbon winch or would you recommend another brand? Cheers Tom
@einfelder82625 жыл бұрын
Just two problems with your winch install - you don't have an isolator switch at the battery end, and you have the motor upside down. A breather cannot breathe when it is at the bottom........ For information for others, on some vehicles (eg Patrol) you have to reverse the active connections from the controller to the motor and spool the cable over the top of the drum, because of the way the rope slot is positioned. Good tip on the number plate, I would suggest another 2 tek screws along the bottom. Vic high country crossings can even lift plates with 2 screws :)
@einfelder82625 жыл бұрын
@@SeekAdventure Reason for isolator is to prevent potential problems of the battery wire rubbing against chassis/body/bullbar sharp edges and shorting. Also malicious operation of the always live winch by outsiders. Breather can't be at the bottom because it will fill with condensation and then you have no breathing. All your other breathers are at the top - engine, radiator, diff, gearbox, t/c -
@shanepascoe10785 жыл бұрын

I will never stand next to a line under tension. Yes, it may be rated 5x what you need, but if the winch line, the shackle, anything fails? It will come back fast and hard, and can slice you like a sword. Keep to the side, stay protected, because one night a used line is going to do that.
