When nailing fixing the bath edge to wall put some cardboard maybe folded to protect tub in case hammer slips off nail strikes.

As a young apprentice my farther showed me a trick to protect the side of a tiled fire surround that needed a nailed fixing on each side nailed into a wooden plug, 1969 he used the back of his Bricklaying trowel both to protect the tile face and to guide his hammer strikes sliding on the back of his trowel.

Hi, is it possible to bend the flange of the tub in order to make it fit? I have a porcelain coated tub and the space is about 1/8-1/4 inch narrower than what I need it to be. I know that the flange of the tub might make a difference Thanks

The only other comment I will make is there should be a waterproof lining that comes down over the raised lip of the bath to prevent water splashing and running down between the bath and wall.

I am replacing an old cast iron tub from the 60’s with a new steel enamel tub. That joust was already cut. I did attach another length to it to hopefully strengthen it. Actually the foam sits at a cross piece installed between the joists, so maybe I will get a few years out of it.

Green board is a bad choice, I had wet moldy greenboard from the 70s behind my tub wall while taking it down this week.

Probably not the greenboard that was the problem. The reason you had mold was that water came in from somewhere and could not drain out. Need to use a system including a water proofing membrane.
