The ninth video in the how-to build a boat series shows how to measure, cut and dry fit the floor. We show you how to take the proper measurements off of an existing hull, and how to transfer those measurements onto plywood. We use a batten to connect our measurements and draw a fair curve. In this video, we are showing the dry fit. It will be installed later in the process.

I have a aluminum jon boat with double floor. What can I do to stiffen it up. Boat shakes when I try to plane. Can you help ?? Thanks, Jesse

Would you consider using a thicker piece of plywood for the floor for walking strength or not needed?

The foam helps carry the load on this small craft. On a larger boat or a boat without foam a thicker piece and/or additional supports would be needed.

I am wondering too...Why a raised floor? Why does this need foam for flotation? I am building a river boat that weighs about 100 lbs. Flat bottom. Zero flotation. Confusing, unless you are going into ocean chop, or going to haul an Elk.

USCG requires floatation foam in all vessels under 20'. To adhere to this we standard we spec it in out designs. It also helps stiffen up the boat and makes it quiet for stalking fish in the flats.

Also, the raised floor does two things 1) the boat is self bailing and 2) the grid structure of the stringers is super strong and solid.

@@saltboatworks1139 Thanks for the info. Over legislated US waste...but if it works for you. Never heard of that USCG rule. My boat is for canals, primarily. Though a poling skiff design, I added a bit of length and beam and am building a tiny outboard with surface drive to help cut the hyacinth. All fun!
