Just knowing that it is possible to install a 3rd party OS on this UGreen NAS without even disassembling it will be a big boost on their Kickstarter campaign. UGreen seems to be keeping their warranty too on the hardware even if you do install a 3rd party OS. I already backed the 8-bay model. Those specs with the super early bird pricing is hard to beat. That would cost you more than twice if Synology offers something similar. 😗

You can hit ctrl+f2 or type systemctl reboot --firmware-setup while ssh in on the ugreen

Thanks for watching! Modifying the EFI partition will also keep the original OS from ever being included in the boot priority selection which I prefer.

@@TwoGuyzTech You can also just use dd command to backup the current firmware to restore anytime you like

I preordered that same "plus" 4-bay unit on kickstarter. I'd like to make an anime plex server on it for teenage niece. I am definitely interested in a custom OS for it. I have prepurchased 4x 22tb seagate ironwolf pro from Newegg, this will be fun Thank you for this in depth knowledge no one else on KZbin has gone this deep!

Thank you so much!! We think you'll be really happy with the unit.

What would happen if after changing the efi files and you are thrown into the bios after reboot you could not disable the watchdog timer? Would the system now bootloop forever/become bricked?
@080030047 ай бұрын
You are right, mine is bricked, I am so regret that I didn't disable the watchdog before I modified the EFI partition.

Your instructions to stop booting into UGOS can be simplified. In your screen capture the lsblk output for partition nvme0n1p1 showed that is was already mounted at /boot. There is no need for the steps to mount the partition for a second time. Just use these commands after logging in: cd /boot ls -l sudo mv EFI EFI_RENAME ls -l sudo reboot

One question is it possible for Ugreen in an update affect your method? Also in terms of someone trying to use both OSes
@TwoGuyzTech9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Not with an update to UGOS. Since it's just a mini PC there's no very good way they could break this method without making major changes to the UEFI firmware, which we don't believe they have any interest in doing. Hope this helps!

I'd probably first boot Clonezilla and make a disk image of the original OS. Then install a clean build of Debian or Ubuntu.... or NixOS

An explanation of how to revert it back would be nice!
@TwoGuyzTech9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Pretty much the same process, if you install Linux or boot into a Linux USB you can run all the same commands to mount the EFI partition again and rename the "EFI_RENAME" folder back to just "EFI". Hope this helps :)

Great video, thanks. I'll probably Clonezilla it first, turn off watchdog second, then run ssh commands third.

I’m kinda of a noob so sorry for dumb question. Do I need to leave the usb plugged in to boot into the os ?

A note. I followed this and renamed the EFI folder. I disabled the mmc in the bios but at some point it reset and killed by UNAS boot disk. I can't go back, so I fully recommend replacing the drive to boot a different software.

Since they can't void a warranty because of a sticker, just replace the internal NVMe with a new cheap one and store the original incase you ever want to go back.

Good idea
@TwoGuyzTech9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. I would sincerely hope that UGREEN would work amicably with customers in this situation, but, it's hard enough to get even US based companies to stand by their warranty if you break a sticker. We agree warranty stickers are absolutely ridiculous and completely infringe on consumer rights, but the power to exercise it or not lies with the manufacturer unless you have the resources to take them to court. Goes for just about any huge company, take a look at Apple.

It might be a silly question but what is the best Linux system to start a Minecraft server so easily
@TwoGuyzTech9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Not a silly question at all. Debian Stable would be a good place to start, since it's a "point release" distro, meaning it gets major stability and security updates every once in a while, as opposed to a "rolling release" which constantly pushes new package updates that could be less stable. There are also many guides for running Minecraft servers on Debian and Debian based distros (like Ubuntu). Hope this helps!
@ChrisChromeYT9 ай бұрын
Quick note about mounting the wifi partition. It was already mounted, under /boot/ This is standard practice on most Linux distros.
