Just what i needed. I tapped power from an existing outlet, and so had black & white (and bare) wires in. Then I ran romex wire from the switch to the light. I thought all black wires were supposed to be wired together. Of course, that gave me constant power (constant "on") at the light. Watching your video i realized the white wires at the switch should be connected and stowed, and that the black wire from the source goes into the switch black wire, and the other black wire (to the light) is to be attached to the red wire. Obviously, I am a know-(almost)-nothing but it feels so good to figure this out. Thank you for the video.

How do you know which color wires from the new switch connect to what black wires are coming out of the wall? Because all the wires coming from the wall in your video are all black, not colored.

One Black to Black on switch … the other Black to Red (the Solid Red if Single pole) on switch. The other “RED wire with White stripe” meant for 3-way Pole. If not CAP IT with wire nut.

The red is your hot wire while the black is neutral. If you have a third wire that’s green, that’s your ground.

Does the hot black wire from the wall needs to connect to red wire from the dimmer switch? I am confused about which wire from the switch to connect to the “hot” wire in the wall. Both wall wires in the wall are black, but I identified which one is the hot wire. So if I just did Black-black, does it matter whether it is to hot black wire or neutral black wire in the wall?
