How to install a Floating Shelf / Floating Shelves | Kmart DIY

This particular one is a Kmart brand and was $13. The process for other brands would be similar if not the exact same.
Tools needed:
Pencil
Tape measure or ruler
Level
Hammer
Screwdriver or drill etc
Bonus points if you have a stud finder

Just curious where those "extra" screws screw into? The ones on the bottom that have the white dot stickers to cover up the holes. Do they screw into the metal reinforcement frame?

Yes they screw into the metal bracket

Thanks for the easy to follow demo. Is there any wall that won't take floating shelves? My problem is I don't know what kind of wall I've got. It seems like a "partition" wall. Washing machine taps have been plumbed into this wall. It's new, part of a reno on a 1850's cottage. It's at the back of the old kitchen fireplace/wood stove, behind it is the new bathroom. When I tap it, it sounds hollow. The reason I want the shelf there is to sit above the washing machine taps to hide them, as I'm not installing a washing machine. Hope all this makes sense.

No problem. If there’s studs or at least 1 stud to screw into shouldn’t be an issue. The less studs you’ve screwed into the less weight I would put on it.

@@projectlex yes definitely using a stud finder. If I put a couple more holes in the metal frame, then put screws in them would that make the kmart shelf stronger?

@@carolineramage7480 I actually did that for another one I put up. I was going to be putting a fair bit of weight on the shelf & only 1 stud lined up with the bracket. I drilled some holes in the bracket where a couple of other studs were to make it more secure.

Oh no! Sorry unfortunately no I don’t. You could take it into Bunnings etc & they should be able to help you out

At 2:32 Is it designed to have the screws visible or can you flip it over and have the screws at the top so you don't see them if the shelf is above your head?

Yeah it's designed specifically for the screws to be at the bottom. If you did it the other way the bracket screw holes (when attached to wall) will be on the bottom part of the bracket (less secure) instead of along the top.

I find that no matter what I do or use, plugs, a stud support, wall mates, so far 2 out of the 3 shelves I’ve bought from Kmart are fine for the first week or two, then they start sagging. Any tips on how to fix this?

If you've managed to screw into a stud definitely shouldn't. Mine has not moved. How much weight are you putting on the shelf?

Use wall dogs instead of wall mates!! Much stronger

Mine are sagging as soon as I put the shelf on. I am an absolute rookie and have no idea what a stud is or where it’s placed with the walls 😔

Yeah definitely needs to be screwed into at least one stud. Studs are the timber or metal framing behind the wall.

Yeah, I’ve definitely messed up on that department too, wasn’t able to find a stud where I wanted the shelf and now it just sags.

Saw your other comment, yeah screwing into the studs is ideal. Otherwise watch my Ikea Wardrobe install (check the description timestamps to skip ahead - screwing/securing to the wall) & check the plugs I use in that. Much stronger than the provided Kmart ones. I would give them a go
