@jasonbengel5 жыл бұрын
I learned the word 'mortise'. This gives me a lot of confidence for replacing a door - thanks, Jeff. One recommendation I learned from a police department is to replace the screws that go in the strike plate (the plates that go into the mortise) is to use 3- or 4-inch screws (not the 1-inch screws they give in the lock kit) so that it goes to the studs. The longer screws make it harder to kick the door in if the strike plates bite into some more wood (or, as you've said in other videos, just in case you have a family of door slammers that also like to push up hard against the doors when they're carrying a load of groceries)... hee hee.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Jason.! LOL the family of door slammers....is that a reference to another one of my videos?
@jasonbengel5 жыл бұрын
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Yes, it is -- I think it's a reference to a basement video where you show three different methods to put in a pre-framed door ("Good, Best, and super-fast"). As you went through the pros/cons, for one of the methods, you said, "This will work great, unless you live in a family of door slammers." Your list of quotables ("Jeffisms") is increasing, though I don't think I'll wear a t-shirt with 6:30 on it quite yet!

Jeff, do you ever run any longer screws into the studs on the latch plate of the deadbolt on the door frame? What about putting longer screws in the deadbolt plate to engage the stud? (I do agree with you that if they WANT to get in, they will, but I still like to make the deadbolt as secure as possible.)
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
Longer screws are optional. I live in Canada so B and E is not a real concern where I live. I can appreciate the need for safety in some communities however!
@MickeyM__5 жыл бұрын
I love your videos but this entire deadbolt is useless when you failed to use screws long enough to hit the studs, your own words where "your only 1/4in from the edge of the wood so run it backwards or it will split every time" so that nice 1/2in or 3/4in dead bolt is only using 1/4 wood to hold that as you said will split every time. a simple fix use 3 inch screws so they bite into something or better yet a dead bolt retainer vs the normal striker which takes 3 or 4 3 inch screws deep into the studs.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY5 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the deadbolt is to lock the door in the sealed position. This is not a security device no matter how much people like to think it is. Cheers!

Top notch video as always, Jefe. Question: Have you ever installed the Defiant motion detector light system? I did my absolute best caulking that thing, and water still somehow got inside and ruined it :(twice): Customer service was not too nice about it, and blamed my poor caulk job. A pro-installation might make for an excellent video - does the farmhouse need motion detection?

Did the water get in the box or the fixture?
@davidozog75495 жыл бұрын
That's the million dollar question. I would hope it didn't get into the box, and I can't imagine a reasonable scenario where that could have happened (except a bad caulk job). The Defiant guy said the water had to come from behind my caulk line because it's literally impossible to come through the fixture side even when submerged in water. I haven't actually opened it up yet to diagnose though. If you're dying to know, maybe I can prioritize this ;)
