I thought the old tile would have to be removed, etc. and all that goes with it. Now I think I can do this by myself, just following what you did, and finally get that new backsplash installed!

There are places on the bucket lid to make 1/4-1/2” cuts. This allows the lid to slide over the lip on the bucket. Ive hung wallpaper for 43 years, and it took me a long time to finally figured out what those places on the lid were for. I love your videos and have watched quite a few. When I prepped for wallpaper, I had to float walls and fix joints. I wasn’t very fast but I learned a lot watching the videos. Now I’m going to tape and float my sons kitchen. Thanks again!

Jeff, you can open that can top easier by cutting the slots on the cover with a blade, then it's easy to remove the top..Same for paint buckets, removing the tops..they also have a special tool with a hook, that grabs the cover after you cut the slots and pulls it up easily :)..You are doing a great job :) !!

This man knows what he's doing. I learned from a tile man (brother-in-law) exactly how they really do a tile job whether it's flooring, showers, or back splashes and from what I see on this video and Jeff's other videos they most closely match what I learned from him. Right down to using an angle grinder with a diamond blade to make smaller cuts and using a cheap tile scoring cutter for the larger cuts.

Regardless of what opinions I was hearing I went ahead and bought the Eco Prime Grip and tried your method, and let me tell you, it worked out GREAT! The EPG really does stick to non-porous material and adhesive mortar by Mapei bonded to it great as well. Really happy about the results. Thanks for taking the time in teaching us on how to do the almost impossible. P.S. I also left the power on, yikes lol!

Hello Joe, what tile was originally on the wall? I put on marble mosaic with the incorrect mortar and grout and it totally changed the tile. (DISTORTED, MULTILATED, DISCOLOURED, CORRUPTED) so now I want to put the same tile over it with improve mortar and grout. I'm worried it will be too thick, but after 10 months of looking for tile, this tile goes really well with my refaced cupboards and new laminate countertop so I would love to keep this. Maybe I should take it all out and redo? Do you think subway tile would be a better choice over the marble mosaic? Would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I am still waiting to hear from Jeff too.

Great info. I followed your advice and paid the hefty $40 for the Eco Prim Grip - it did work. I wish they offered it in smaller containers. BTW - Home Depot doesn't carry it. Only Lowes, at least that's how it is in our area. And no Ultra lite, either. So, I used the usual mortar and it worked. I got the tiles done. Looks great. Thank you.

StarrTile Over a floor is one thing but a tile on a backsplash is much safer if the tile your going over is flat not loose and with primer etc.. plus there is zero foot traffic on the area obviously... not like a floor which I’ve tiled over meself before and i think You have a video we’re you tiled over floor tile aswell if I’m not mistaken.. all depend on the job an circumstances of the underneath tile etc.. I like some of yr vids buddy and your honesty in critiquing yr own bathroom which would do my head in with some of the decisions you made but something tells me you got most of them materials FREE.. and used what you had.. available...😉👍

Some needs to be removed and I am worried about replacing drywall, but now I know that tiling over tile is a thing and I can do this! I was a professional house painter for 49 yrs. And though I didn't like getting roped into all around handyman style jobs, I would occasionally let my guard down and say yes to things outside of my usual realm of services offered. Kind of depended on just how much there was to it. I only did a few small tile jobs in my day, and so can't say I'm knowledgeable in the field. I do however appreciate just how cool that primer you used to get the new tile to bond was, and i really also liked that mastic, you're right, it's thick and yet has an open time which keeps it from setting too quickly! There's nothing like a little wiggle room that you get from a forgiving product that allows room for mistakes or just playing around with it until you've got it exactly like you like it. The glue gun is also a nice touch for quick and and easy installation of your aluminum trim! Overall, a very smooth and slick job, altogether!looked good and I enjoyed learning about the new technology, as you put it! Keep 'em coming.

If you want to store the product for a long time i would be careful that its still air tight. The paint colors of your living room for example. My paint buckets sit already for years in storage and i still use them after patching a hole in the wall.

Right. I knew by the way you were struggling and fighting with that simple lid that you were only trying to get viewers to come up with a better answer than what is printed in the directions by the manufacturer. On the side of the container. Along with the correct procedures for application of the product...

Glad I saw this. I have the same situation and was thinking how do I go about tiling over this fake tile board without removing my cabinets and taking this off without destroying the wall. I find this video on KZbin, Thank you sir.

Can you use the same process to tile over the cheap contractor grade white 4x4 tiles in a tub and shower surround?

Thanks! OMG I love this video, I was ready to start hacking away at the old backsplash tile, perfect timing for me to see this! Couple of questions for you, Would this method work for 1/4 inch thick glass tile? Would the back buttering work for the whole area?

My existing back-splash is sheet arborite or formica (same as and matched the old counters) which is very well adhered to a plaster & lathe wall. Probably installed in the late 60's. The formica sheet even extends under the upper cabinets, so I'd have to start by cutting it out with a multi-tool. Plaster & lathe removal is much nastier than drywall removal and then I'd have to deal with the thickness differences to install new drywall. Until now, that's why I have never replaced it. Would the MAPEI Eco Prim Grip work as well over the formica for a back-splash tile similar to yours?

This looks STUNNING!! A few questions... For someone renting an extremely outdated home (with the landlords approval, of course) 1. Can Peel & Stick Backsplash be placed over existing kitchen tile backsplash? 2. What’s an affordable & durable way to update tile countertops? 3. The kitchen flooring is laminate or vinyl with tears, it’s outdated & ugly... What is an affordable way to update it? 4. The kitchen cabinets have multiple layers of paint (they look terrible) how can I affordably update them? 5. The bathroom - the entire shower is cover in yellow/brown tiles as well as the Countertop & Backsplash on the vanity... how can I update those affordably with something durable? Hope to get a response, thanks in advance!!

Not really fond of the metal frame on the exposed edges. Any other suggestions to cover the exposed edge? Thanks in advance. I was about to start demo’ing current backsplash and this looks fantastic

I had a nauseating mirror backsplash and I literally just crossed my fingers 4 years ago and did a subway tile backsplash right over the top !!!!! And it’s worked perfectly- Just like he said we can rely on technology now more than technique. When I started I had no one to turn to to ask if this would actually work or if the tiles would just slip off the mirror. But I also knew I couldn’t smash the mirror and rip it out before I applied tile because… Glass shards everywhere!!! Anyway I’m happy to say it’s gorgeous and it’s held up fine and it hasn’t slipped at all and it’s a great improvement - thanks for this video!! I wish I had that primer tip, but it was fine.

He has another video showing how to tile over time in the shower area and it's slightly different because you have to control moisture too so check that video out and then do it.
