This video walks through the process of wiring in a universal kill switch. This process will be almost identical on all classic Hondas and very similar on most classic bikes.

Great video, motorcycle wiring is a new frontier for me. I found this video because I want to replace the kill switch on my 96' Honda XR250R. Your CB550 sounds great! With any luck, I hope to hear the sound of my bike again soon. Thanks

Cool bike, I have a 1980 cb125 single not running.Has new battery and I replaced old broken light switch that had a kill switch and 7 wires in total. I ordered a new switch and it has no kill switch but only 6 wires. When I turn key nothing happens, no lights, no blown fuse, no power at coil. I don't know where the previous extra white wire was joined to either after it left the switch? Help!

Just watched the whole series and subscribed. Awesome! You have very similar ideas to what I want to do with a b750 this winter. Did you decide to leave the color of the tank? I like the purple, but I was sort of excited about the bare brushed look!
@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 7 жыл бұрын
I decided to keep the stock color/patina. Nothing else on the bike is perfect so i figured if the tank looked brand new it wouldn't look right on the bike. Thanks for watching and make sure to come back for the Triumph build!

Do you mind if I ask what kind of throttle your using and what kind of mini controls on the clutch side. I've got some clip ons to install on my 74 cb550, but I'd really like to clean up the bars a bit with some smaller controls.
@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 7 жыл бұрын
Most universal "Honda" type throttles will work just make sure to buy one that fit's your clip ons. Mine are 7/8" which is the same as the stock Honda bars. Same goes for the clutch lever. Mine is just a universal 7/8" setup.

sir is the other wire of the switch goes to positive side of the coil? cuz the one you hook is on the positive side of the headlight. can this wiring also work on scooters?
@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 7 жыл бұрын
I would assume the process would be very simmular on a scooter. Should be hard to figure out if you can find a wiring diagram for your model.

Thanks! I'm really enjoying building a bike that puts me out of my comfort zone a little(My Triumph). So the next build I do will definitely be something I haven't done before.

Why not do the Vermont loop hole? Vermont will give you an out of state registration with plate and then transfer it to a Texas title. Totally legal and pretty cheap.

I haven't looked into that. Sounds interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi! I have a aero style red flick cap kill switch which I want to wire between the ignition key and start button. So that before being able to start the bike I have to flick open the kill switch. I connected the kill switch to ground, black & white to the coils and with the start button. The start button is connected to ignition for LED and starting motor. When I now turn the key I am still able to start the bike without the kill switch being flicked on "running" position. Can anyone help?

Check out this site for an awesome interactive wiring diagram. oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring750K1.html You should be able to just wire in the switch in the middle of that black/white wire and a solid black(Key on power). That way the coils only get power when that switch is on. Hope that helps.

Is your ignition switch universal or was it the stock switch just relocated?

+Chris Epping I'm on the lookout for an early 70s Triumph to make into a hardtail bobber. I'm also keeping an eye out for more CB550's because I have an addiction.

why didn't you just put the switch òn the other side of the box? wires already in box
@ClassicOctane
@ClassicOctane 7 жыл бұрын
I thought about that but went this route for a few reasons. I wanted to be able to kill it easily with my right thumb. Just in case the bike ever fell over or to kill it while coming to a stop (I could still be pulling the front brake). Also to have one less thing crowding the already full battery box.
