i also suggest using some of my older videos to help you remove the battery and upper accessories if you need the help
This is a full DIY on removing the transmission, clutch and rear main seal.
I highly suggest 2 jacks, a set of jack stands and a friend to do this because it involves heavy lifting.
I am sorry that some of the video is really dark, we did not have proper lighting while we were working on the car. more towards the end of the video there is very good lighting and you can see how most of it comes out.

Pinche, I owe you a beer man. Just completed this exact job using this video... First time doing a clutch. I went for a new dmf instead of the single mass conversion, keeping it stock. Only really referred to the manual for torque specs. Old clutch was metal on metal, new clutch feels so good and shifting is great. Jetta '04 1.8t 5spd manual right hand drive. When the man says pull the cups off the transmission... you pull the cups off the transmission.

Thanks so much al, this video was a big help tonight. Did my first ever trans job by myself! I didn't have to remove the axle cup, didn't hang up on the subframe. I did however remove the bracket for the Trans mount which gave me more room to slide the Trans away from the engine before lowering and completely clear the subframe. Thing practically fell right out

Taking the cup off the passenger's side (where the passenger's axle connects to the transmission) is a really good idea. Don't really have to worry about oil coming out, unless you put the transmission at a really extreme angle. Makes the transmission removal so much easier. Nice point! I have an engine hoist, so lowered the transmission with that, the balance point is pretty close to the clutch slave cylinder bolt hole nearest to the firewall, so you can hook your chain there. I like that, since no way can the transmission fall off anything, since it is hanging!

Been a few months now since I followed your tutorials Swapped out my clutch, replaced my rear main seal, thanks to your help my rear main seal went on with no issue, no leaks in sight since I’ve done it. Remember folks, apply that dumb PTFE rear main dry, slip it on nice and careful, the people online saying it’s rocket science must’ve been hamfisting the thing, first rear main install ever and there’s no issue.

One other thing I did was simply cut the speed sensor wires, since it looked highly probable I would break the sensor trying to unplug it. It was turned all the way against a boss, so wouldn't have come out, anyway. I got a nice waterproof three wire, male/female plug from Walmart that works beautifully as a reusable splice.

I just changed mine over the weekend. From standard clutch, to a stage 2 clutch and lighter flywheel. 1st torgueing the flywheel to 45 pounds was feelinc wrong, so did a little under that. And the pressureplate had some washers, i should never had put them on, since now when i start the car. The starter is hitting them so im hoping the washers on Day just break in pieces and rattles out the clutch housing one Day. Other than that, i did not take the cups off. Cause they didnt really give me a problem. And last Thing, My gear linkage was different, so i took it apart a little different Way then you. And that made My gear change different but Also better :D So thank you for the guide, it helped alot :)

The bolts are one time use. They are called stretch bolts or torque to yield. I can gurantee you they will fall off. After a couple days or week of driving it. That is why they have a 1/4 turn after you torque them down to 45lbs... Your axel bolts are torqued down to 45lbs and that is it. But the fly wheel is a whole other can of worms sir. I wish you luck.

Thank you for such a thorough DIY video! I'm in the middle of this swap myself. If you may give your input on the crank seal section: I've read horror stories of people swapping a perfectly good crank seal only to have the new one leak on them. Do you believe in the idea of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" for this part? Or are you confident the new seal kit and your ATV silicon application will do the trick?

Did you see where it's leaking from? If it's leaking from the crank you need to be careful sliding the seal over if it has a small fold or crease it will leak. Hopefully you use the provided slide tool that most good MFGs provide. If it's leaking from the block you need to clean the surface very well and make sure you don't have any scratches or else it will leak. Last but not least if it's leaking from the oil pan you need to add a tiny bit of RTV on the edges of the seal to help with that. I hope this helps

Owww never mind.... If you cant do it in your own get a buddy to push it in for you while you thread it back in. If you cany get help get a 3/8 version with an extension and push it in. That's how i always do it.

Did you consider; installing a reinforced performance clutch fork? I hear; the 02J, has problem with bent clutch forks. www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=02j%20reinforced%20clutch%20fork It looks like you got rid of your stock DMF and clutch; which clutch did you upgrade to (Looks like a ECSTUNING/SACHS based kit). I would assume; your turbo upgrade, wiped out your stock DMF/clutch? :) A discussion; on why you chose the clutch you installed; would be a great addition to the video. Thanks!

Any help appreciated ! The ecs stage 1 clutch kit with 14lbs single mass flywheel says there will be " audible chatter " from the transmission using the single mass flywheel.. Is there anyone that used the same kit and has the " chatter " theyre talking about.. Wondering how bad it is and if i should go with a dual mass instead? Thanks
@PincheALsGarage

Yeah dropping almost half the weight of a flywheel will cause a chatter. Will sound like a something is loose but you only hear it at idle once you start moving it goes away completely

Kane Tornberg you can never run a dual mass stock flywheel with an aftermarket clutch. you will need a different flywheel. i never meet anyone with a stock flywheel and a high pressure clutch kit.
