How to Install a RACE Cold Air Intake

In this video, I install an RIS (Race Intake System) by DDMWorks on my Mini. It utilizes the hood scoop, removes the restrictive honeycomb grill behind the hood scoop, and redirects cold air directly into the take box. This type of air intake will be utilizing two sources as an air intake, as opposed to just one.
I would have loved to have taken the car for a spin, where I would have measured the intake temperature before and after the install, however with no wheels or tires, that’s kind of impossible…
Now you will definitely notice a difference audibly, however as for performance, a dynomometer is the only way to actually verify if the car is faster with the intake.

You should change the plastic tubing running to the turbo with a smoother aluminum pipe. You’ll have less turbulence, plus it’ll look better with the intake.

You should do a new exhaust system, new front bumper, back diffuser, side skirts, engine detail, interior strip, race seats with harness and gloss black elements. Just my ideas that would make this a great project track as well as road car!

I just want to throw this out there, German designed vehicles (yes I know Mini is a British car/ owned by BMW) or any European vehicle tend to have slight issues with oiled air filters due to the oil coating the MAF. So Be careful with that, my old VW GTI I kept OEM filter due to that being such a serious issue, and the previous owner of my M3 put a K&N drop in, and the oil coated the MAF, killing some performance & mpg. I went back to an oem filter & my vehicle runs so much nicer. I don't know how it'll effect a mini cooper, but watch out for that, also I'm sure you've heard this before but from my tuning knowledge you don't unlock too much from a oiled filter/ cold air intake until you tune that baby, which would be cool to see!

I think that mesh you took out can be modified. Maybe with a dremel open up the closed portions in the honey comb. It would also hide that area that you painted a bit. IDK about minis but on vw/audi cars k&n oiled filters kills the maf sensor. Good work on the install!

Awesome video, even six years later. My only thought is with the hood under the ram scoop. Maybe using a foil A/C tape to go from the opening length wise of the hood, just to smooth out the contours of the hood. Help air flow smoother through there? I know my comment is old, just wondering as I just watched it.

Unfortunately most short ram-air systems such as this really don't provide as much benefit other than being cool. A cold air intake can help a bit because cold air is denser, meaning more O2 getting through the throttle body, but unless you're tracking it and the intake is insulated from the engine compartment it's not going to make much of a difference. Unfortunately that ram scoop on the hood doesn't look like it would do much to interrupt the laminar flow over the hood which wouldn't assist with the ram-air function, and it's a wide flat black surface directly over the running engine, which seems like it's perfect for warming the air as it enters the air box, and then there's the whole oiled filters and MAF sensors thing... but hey, it's a cool project, and it looks and sounds good which is plenty enough reason for me to do something with my car... just ask my $1400 worth of flat black rims + tires on a car bought for $500. Cars are supposed to be fun after all.

However, I would think the water would turn the dirt in the air filter to mud, so the water that did get into the engine and intake system would be mud water rather than clean water.

@@davidmoss8993 A mist of clean water won't hurt anything other than maybe the MAF sensor if your car has one, that's not the problem. A lot of people actually use water injection systems to spray some water into the intake to help cool their intake air for more power. The problem would be that the air filter is going to contain some amount of dirt and dust unless you clean it constantly and when it gets wet that dirt and dust turns to mud and the engine ends up sucking mud water in, which clearly isn't good. Washing the dirt from the air filter into the engine defeats the entire purpose of having one in the first place.

Good question! Well because we oiled are intake, we know water won't penetrate it. On top of that, the intake box has drain holes on the bottom of it to allow any water to simply drain out of it

They make hydro pre filters , rain and snow don't effect it much without it and if it's getting enough water to hydro lock the motor it made it past the filter then the turbo then into the intercooler then back up across the motor then down into the intake manifold. Hydrolock is highly unlikely 😀

Nice one. I am planning a custome hood scoope on my Audi however I have an issue which is rain water.. While driving in rain all wattr will be pushed direct on to the air filter. I wounder how big of a problem this might be.. Did you drive yours yet? Can you report nay watter issue?

are you worried about hydrolocking? i get the stock intake sitting near the top in the engine bay. unless you go through a really deep puddle theres no worries. at the top, completely open to anything you drive through? that k&n oil is only gonna last so long.

T Pol There is a nylon/sock (wrap) that prevents that. From water and dust particles getting in. I just orders one from AEM for 40$ you can get them cheaper anywhere on Google.

Hello I have an R56s and I noticed that you did not install a hydro guard on the performance intake(hood scoop). I am considering going a similar route on my Mini, living in the Pacific Northwest, and am concerned about water entering through the hood scoop, we get a lot of rain, and the potential for hydro lock. So, is the hydro shield necessary for this application?

It depends which one. Any of the Coopers are fine, but the S and JCW models are notorious for issues as they are high performance engines. They are more needy of servicing and require a keen eye for detecting problems. I would steer away if you are not too mechanically inclined.

There is a drain port on the bottom of the intake box. I've parked it in the rain, driven in the rain, and am yet to have any problems.

no difference in preformance. since the ecu kinda guards the set hp from the factory . a downpipe / intercooler give you earlier rise in hp / torque but the max hp will be about the same . These cars need to be remapped if you want more hp . without fiddeling with the engine specs ofc . // if you want more hp refresh the oil every 10000km / 7500miles otherwise big troubles xD

Its not necessary for a boosted car. I can just pump up the boost and make power that way, with just a flash. Also, there isn't much room in the engine bay of a mini for performance mods lol

Oiling up the air cone filter restricts air flow homie keep it clean and dry to get the better performance and high flow air … and all that recharge oil is gonna get sucked into the engine believe me
