This install shows a 4 point racing harness which is a technical requirement for some competitive driving.
Some manufacturers sell a 5th strap to convert your 4 point harness into a 5 point harness and there are also 4 point anti-submarining harnesses available. There is a lot of discussion and valuable conversation to be had around safety so do your own research and get the safest option for your needs.
Depending on your country and region, there are a range regulations and requirements so you should always check with your local authority to make sure you have the safest option.

Other reasons for harness expiration dates: UV exposure and stretch. The UV exposure part is a bit more straight-forward, as it's common to see items with UV inhibitors still fade, crack, and even dissolve given enough time. Stretch is something that isn't immediately obvious. It's basically part of the seat belt/harness design to allow the fabric a slight amount of "give" in the event of a collision. The weave design does that. So when you see warnings about the harness needing replacement after any given incident, it's partly because the belt should have stretched to deal with the body moving into it, and it won't return to its previous state. It's designed for a single, major event. As a side note, they can stretch over time anyway, and since a race harness is supposed to go in a "race car" (or whatever you're strapping to whichever; I won't judge) the odds of excessive vibration while the vehicle is operating are high, so it will give over a long enough time frame. It's meant to. Always replace the used harnesses after a collision and/or within the expiration period. Whichever comes first.

Just want to make a point about racing harnesses and road legality that isn't brought up in the video: Racing harnesses aren't road legal because they don't allow your upper torso to bend forward in a rollover. Street cars don't have roll cages, so the roof will collapse some in a rollover and your body needs to be able to bend over in that occurence. A stock belt keeps one shoulder free so your torso can bend. With both shoulders stuck to the seat in a racing harness, your neck and spine will take on the full force of the collapsing roof and kill you. This is why you should only ever use racing harnesses if you also have a roll cage, and at that point you also need a helmet so you aren't hitting your head on those steel bars in a crash. Basically, use ALL stock components (stock seat, wheel with airbag, 3pt belts) or use ALL racing components (racing wheel, 5/6pt harness, non-reclinable bucket seat), as doing anything in between is less safe than either of these two options.

Yeah, It's not technically illegal to wear a helmet in a car in most places, but probably not a smart idea in traffic since it's gonna restrict your peripheral vision somewhat. If you really want a "racing" setup on the street, MCM mentioned DOT-approved anti-submarining 4-point harnesses that in some cases are road legal as long as they use a stock-style big red PRESS button, which is also required for road legality. I suppose then you could feasibly also use a racing seat and roll bar without a helmet (as long as you use SFI padding on the bars) and still *MIGHT* maintain road legality. Still questionable on safety though, which IMO is more important than legality. I think US law states that removing any factory installed safety device is a federal offence, which definitely means no racing wheel, and might mean no racing seat either (not sure if the seat is considered a safety device by law). But I think the DOT-approved 4-point harness would be legal as long as you don't need to remove the stock belt to install it. Obviously do your own research as well, since I'm not a legal professional nor an expert on automotive safety.

SjDhALkJfgs that's not entirely true, regular seat belts and seats are supposed to keep you just as upright as race seats and harnesses, and modern cars undergo rollover testing where the car is supposed to support itself upside down. The problem is that regardless of the safety benefit of aftermarket harnesses, they don't go through the same DOT testing as oem equipment, and therefore default as illegal for the street. The big disadvantage of a 4 point as the video point out, is that in some cases your shoulder belts can push you down under the belts causing serious harm. But with a good seat and proper harness installation this danger is minimized.

+SjDhALkJfgs In the US it is not illegal to use a 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 point harness/restraint system on public roads. It is illegal to not have the factory FMVSS 209/DOT restraint system also installed and in some states not using the factory restraint system. It is perfectly legal to use both factory and aftermarket restraint systems concurrently. There are DOT approved aftermarket restraint systems from several manufacturers including the pioneer Schroth, however some states also require the factory restraint systems remain in the vehicle and be functional. It should be noted that operating a vehicle without the factory FMVSS/DOT restraint systems are only vehicle infractions and not criminal offenses. Your comment about additional injury using n aftermarket harness without a roll cage is an often repeated myth, there have only been 2 cases in 46 years where an occupant in a vehicle without a roll bar/cage was seriously injured in a rollover while properly using an aftermarket racing harness. Most US vehicles produced after 1989 model year have relatively good rollover roof crush protection builtin and most vehicles produced for the US market after 2000 model year have excellent occupant rollover roof crush protection due to FMVSS mandated structural performance improvements. Crash tests have shown that with the factory restraint system there is an increased likelihood that the occupants will slip out of the factory restraints and likely experience ejection from the vehicle or sustain additional injury or death when compared to aftermarket 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 point harness/restraint systems. Wearing a helmet while operating a vehicle on public roads is actually illegal in only 3 US states and and there is pending litigation to possibility overturn (no pun intended) the law in 1 of the states. Currently there are only 2 states that prohibit roll bars/cages in vehicles operated on public roads (with or without a helmet).

4-6 point harnesses are a must!! All the people criticizing 4 or more point harnesses have obviously never been in a serious racecar in a serious racing environment. I've raced open-wheel cars and a prototype-style car and you would never want less than 4 points. 4 to 6, always, 100%. It's not just for safety but feeling the car, every tiny little movement, tiny differences in lateral or longitudinal wheelspin, feeling tiny quick changes in grip, etc.

Why they removed the video: Some of you may have seen a new video go up today on the install of a racing harness. We've decided to re-address a problem with the edit so we've taken it down. We set up the seat belt for Marty, and once it was set I got into the seat to do the outro. Because it was set up for his body and not mine, the buckle was sitting in a different position and not as low as it should have been. Being a safety aspect of the car it's a good one to get right. We'll have a look at this again once we're both back from America. Thought it was worth explaining why the episode may have suddenly disappeared from your subscription box! Wrap around belts spread the weight of an impact over the whole bar. Eyelet clip belt mounts focus the weight on a bolt and an inch or so of weld.

Okay, I'm making this post in an attempt to save anyone else who wishes to install a harness, harness bar, or roll cage from ending up paralyzed or dead. I see improperly used and improperly installed equipment on a regualr basis, and it kills me to see people risking their lives and their passengers lives simply because they don't have the pertinent information. You NEVER mount harnesses to the floor, period. What is keeping you from doing a face plant on the steering wheel/dash in a front end collision? The seatback? That seat would snap like a toothpick. Not only that, as you fly forward into the dash, and you will, in even a low speed accident, the harness is going to pull down on your shoulders and compress your spine causing a debilitating or fatal back injury. Furthermore, harnesses, harness bars, and roll cages have no place in a street car, period. DO NOT USE HARNESS BARS for safety equipment. Use a bolted or welded in roll cage. But you are putting your life on the line if you use a roll cage, or even a harness bar without wearing a helmet AT ALL TIMES in the car. I know of someone who was killed in a 25mph collision when he bumped his head on his harness bar. DO NOT USE ROLL BARS/CAGES on the street. You should never get into a car that has any type of roll cage or roll bar in it unless you wear a helmet at all times. See above for a further explaination of why a helmet is necessary. DO NOT USE 4 POINT HARNESSES. Use 5 or 6 point harnesses. The reason you submarine out of a 4 point harness is that your upper body does not lean forward and over the lap belt like it would with a 3 point. Thus, the g forces force your body out under the lap belt. The act of submarining out of a belt is going to seriously injure and potentially kill you, but once you've submarined out of the harness, you can also be ejected from the car. Also, if you have a 5 or 6 point harness and it works as it should, it decelerates your torso instantly in a frontal impact, but your head will continue moving forward. This will result in a debilitating or fatal neck injury or instantly fatal basular skull fracture. Oh and that front airbag, forget about it because you'll never reach it if the harness works. Never use a harness on the street, period. Next, harnesses should only be mounted at shoulder level and mounted only to a welded or bolted in roll cage, period. Mounting to the floor, or rear seatbelt mounts, causes the harness to pull down on your shoulders and crush your spine when you are in a frontal impact, causing a debilitating or fatal back injury. Also, you will be hitting the steering wheel/dash with full force if you've bolted the harness to the floor. The only place I would say that it is remotely safe to use an improperly installed harness is the autocross. This is because collisions at autocross events are more than rare, so you would not be at much risk of using the harness as a safety restraint. But, injuries are still possible, at least you can now weigh the risks and make an informed decision as to whether or not you use this equipment in your car. STREET CARS DO NOT USE AFTERMARTKET SEATS. Well, they don't when they have integral airbags in the seats. When you remove the seats with airbags, the airbag light comes on, and you have now DISABLED EVERY AIRBAG IN THE CAR. You have no more front, side, or curtain airbags. You have also put yourself in hot water with your insurance company by removing your factory safety equipment. If you or someone else is injured or killed in your vehicle, even if the accident is the other guy's fault, you are going to get sued. I've had several people mention that 'race cars' use this type of safety equipment, but.... Also consider that accidents in race cars are NOT usually as severe as accidents on the street. Everyone is going the same direction on a race track, so no head on collisions. The track is lined with tire walls and barriers so that it is highly unlikely that you could hit a solid object like a tree. The track is set up so that collisions are deflected and cars can't deccelerate all at once. There should be no spot on a track where you can go head on into something and deccelerate intantly. On the street, the hazards and potential impacts are far greater in likelihood and severity than on a track. Furthermore, The safety equipment used in 'race cars' is a system, period. You cannot pick and choose what equipment you want to use. No harness without a HANS, no HANS without a helmet, no cage without a helmet, the list keeps going in cirlces. YOU NEED EVERYTHING. Race car drivers do not piecemeal their safety equipment together. The factory safety equipment is the best possible design for street use and is also a system. When you remove or change one piece, nothing else works like it should. It kills me to see people risking and losing their lives so that they can have some Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements on their cars. If self preservation is at all alive within you, use your factory safety equipment AND ONLY YOUR FACTORY SAFETY EQUIPMENT on the street.

But your point "that accidents in race cars are NOT usually as severe as accidents on the street" don't apply to rally cars, which use a similar safety equipments like 'race cars' going on a circuit with tire barriers and so on. Rally cars can hit for example a tree or a wall, which makes them deccelerate instantly.

I like your post Leo, but I do want to point out a few things. Basilar skull fractures are only likely to occur due to the weight of the helmet. A lack of a helmet significantly reduces the chance of a basilar skull fracture. Of course a basilar fracture is still possible without a helmet, but it's much less likely. Harness belts are designed to stretch for this reason among others (like protecting the collar bone). A HANS device also does not fully protect you from neck injury, like side-impacts. Roll bar padding drastically reduces the chance of injury in event of contact with a roll bar. You know a guy that died from a 25mph collision that involved head contact with a bar, and I know of a guy (I can link his story below) who survived a 70mph rear end collision because of SFI 45.1 roll bar padding. I'm not saying it's as safe as having no bar, but you can take steps to make it drastically less dangerous than a bare steel bar. forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=308182 You can actually reach the airbag if the harness works. It depends on how tight it is. When I put my harnesses on, I put them on so tight I get bruises after my races. Combined with my light weight, I probably would not reach the air bag. But harnesses are designed to stretch, and stretch more than one might think. I took a racing school with someone who broke their jaw on the steering wheel in a formula car when they hit the wall, even with belts on (no HANS though). Probably slightly loose belts, as most would run them on the street. I laugh darkly every time I see a tuner kid driving around with floppy straps on... There should be no spots on the track where you can decelerate instantly, but there are in reality. I hit one of those spots when I smashed into a wall head first at 90MPH. My first thought was, man, that hurt a lot less than I thought it would. Turns out I bought $5,000 worth of safety gear for a reason. But I guess all this is kinda moot because I drive a 1994 Miata with no ABS, traction control, stability management, or functioning air bags (she alternates between complaining about the passenger and driver airbag), and it has a roll bar with stock seats and seat belts. Buying a second car soon, maybe a VW, or a Volvo. But I also want a motorcycle. Hard choices.

I got really big into car mods, but I was only 12 at the time. Another important point is that racing harnesses allow you to use a HANS device (called a Frontal Head Restraint or FHR in FIA lingo) if you have a compatible helmet (racing classes that require harnesses usually also require it). E.g. CAMS says State level and above (State/National and International) must have a roll cage (depends on the car, and racing class), and a 6 or 5 point harness with a HANS, both to FIA spec.

Shane Hildebrand It's dangerous for street use or in situations where you somehow end up in a head on collision. Bit if your only gonna be track driving and Drifting 4 point is fine. If your gonna street drive oem 3 point or a 5 point harness would be safer. But a 5 point is inconvenient and hurts if you have a Dick.

patw52pb1 3-point allows your body to move forward a little bit therefore during the collision there is no chance of submarining. 4-point holds your body much better and that is good for driving because you are not sliding across the seat, but when it comes to safety especially during front end colisions, its either 3-point, 4-point with asm strap or 5 and 6-point that will save you. Most people say that basic 4-point is good enough for the track and for 90% thats true because its unlikely that you end up in a front end collision but when you do you are in trouble.

its worth mentioning that there exist 4 point harnesses that are made for road use. Some of theese use a snandard buckle (the one with one red button found in most cars) and anti submarine technology (shoulderharness is folded over itself and sew together so in case of an accident, the sewed part becomes unfolded, and your upoer body gets thrown just enough forward so that you wont submarine under the lower part of the harness)

RE: expiring belts, they do sort of "go off". I suppose it's​ been mentioned by now, things like bulletproof vests with Kevlar and other aramid fibers degrade​ over time and loose their strength and particularly their ability to stretch. A lot of those high strength engineered fibers are what saftey belts for race cars, aircraft, and climbing equipment are made out off. In particular they tend to be affected by UV, so the result is you tend to get expiration dates that in addition to saftey regulations are based in the chemistry used to produce them.

Cole Hart Willans is far from cheap. they were only replaced because they were out of date. as for why they went for another 4 point I can't tell you. even is they have ASM technology a 4 point should not be trusted. do yourself a favor. 5 point minimum everytime.

2 or 3 pointers are easier to get out of in case of emergency, that´s why especially 5+ pointers are not street legal in most countries...Certain H-Belts (that´s how we call the 4 pointers) are legal in Germany though (well, they were when i last checked^^) and they certainly saved a friend´s life when she tried out how far you can barrel-roll your car across an acre...

My (rudimentary) understanding of 4 point harnesses is that they are dangerous because they can cause submarining. In these instances, the factory belt is a safer option. If you were to track a car, a 5-point harness is an even safer option.

Just a quick FYI for MCM to double check you haven't got a set of fake harnesses they are out there and have been found in Australia the easiest way to check is I the fine adjuster on the shoulder strap has a spring in the adjuster

A few things that should be clarified here guys. I know your guide is somewhat universal and people should always check their rule book, but if they did that then they wouldn't need this video. A couple of my quick thoughts after watching: 1) The belts are lifed primarily due to UV damage, which weakens the webbing and stitching and severely compromises it's breaking tensile strength. This has been proven in testing, particularly with open wheel cars where the belts spend a lot of time in direct sunlight. 2) The NOT VALID AFTER dates are only used for FIA level events! Most people racing at club or even state level Motorsport get a 5 year extension on the NOT valid after date. 3) I highly recommend the use of spring washers under the nuts under the car, otherwise the will likely fall off due to vibrations. 4) Depending on the harness, there are different rules as to which events it can be used for and the date compliance issues. 5) You didn't mention lever buckle type latch harnesses. These are used in speedway as the are less prone to clogging with dirt than the radial buckles 6) The angle of the shoulder straps is crucial as to prevent downward forces on the occupants spine which can cause nasty back injuries. Too often people bolt the straps down to the floor directly behind the seat. This is a big no no and definitely worth mentioning and advising people not to undertake! 7) You failed to explain WHY harnesses are illegal for street use. It's because they're bolted to non structural parts of the car and therefore not ADR or crash tested. Same goes for seats and roll cages which are all generally roadworthy fails unless engineer certified. Might be nitpicking here but if you're going to do a How to guide, you need to get all the facts right and make it as accurate as you can. For climbing harnesses they have a date to not use after due to UV degradation of the material in the harnesses (same material as racing harnesses) done a course in work for it and they said same reason as this dude: wear and tear and newer models are better but the main reason is UV degradation, basicly the material breaks down due to UV, which may not be visible to naked eye but if you suddenly put a huge load though it the material it can break.

Race harnesses can be engineered in nsw without an issue. You must follow the engineers instructions.. Proof of purchase is one thing Centre locking mechanisms are out. Seatbelt type buckles are fine. 15 degrees is maximum slope on the top straps. Reinforcement plate must be done correctly not some bolt through loose plate. It must be stitch welded on the backside. Examples of cars which come standard with race harnesses are. Gt Porsche Ferrari f340 Clubman type cars Early jaguars Gtr 400r Just to name a few

Could you guys cover LED lighting for older cars, as in cars that came with halogen...stuff before 2008 i guess. The LEDs are much brighter, but not always, and the quality you get can affect things too. Also most people go nuts over the "temperature" or coloration of the light because it's a big number, but the important one is Lumens, which doesn't get a lot of mention in ads. I'm wondering if the same amount of Lumens provides the same amount of light on the road across LED, HID, and Halogen bulbs. It's possible to upgrade all your lights and do a good job, but it''s also possible to go so bright the car will be a hazard on the road.

These are legal in the UK as long as they have the British Standard Mark, we make several cars here (Caterham, Noble etc.) that come with multipoint harnesses from the factory. So nyeh :P

Many racing harnesses are very unsafe because of submarining. A standard seatbelt tightens down on your pelvis as your body moves forward (antisubmarining), but many racing harnesses just slip up into your gut and cause massive internal bleeding. even many of the very well known harnesses do this.
