Matt, would love to see a full comparison of the different decking materials primarily for the various plastic composite materials and how they hold up overtime. I know your clientele would normally opt for some exotic hardwood but those aren't always in the budget. Thanks!

Nice video. Matt - or anyone else reading this - appreciate some newbie advice. I'm a San Antonio homeowner turning my old home into an airbnb, and want to add a 15' x 80 " patio door (replacing a window, a rotted french door, and a 2 ft of wall) across the back of the house for wow effect. So far I stopped into my local homedepot and got a quote within my price range on a JenWeld 4500 vinyl XX0 with 3 oversized sections totaling 177". The door frame looks a little thinker than I'd like, and the sill depth is over 8" for that 3 track product. Could you suggest other alternatives. Also after watching your video, for a mutlidoor that big, it doesnt seem like I want just any neighborhood contractor to put it in - any suggests for someone experienced in my area or willing to come from Austin?

Matt, been watching a lot of your videos as i am going to be redoing some insulation windows and siding on my 1970s house. Starting to get a good grasp of the modern building techniques and modern building science. I'm trying to figure this out. I'm installing a Grandview multi slide door from Westeck windows. It looks and assembles very much like this door here. Its not feasible for me to re sheathe my entire house in zip system. I am however planning to use a wbr wrap on my entire house. I want to make sure i get the sill pan for this done properly. I will wrap my wrb past the window on the sides in the rough opening and then use a stretch/flex tape for the sill as you have demonstrated with wrb and zip systems. However i have this problem that he is talking about in this video. If i use a metal pan i just have to screw through it. Is stretch/flex tape sufficient for the sill pan in this application/ will it self seal to some degree? What would you recommend? the door is in an opening that is about a a foot and a half off the patio and will have steps built down and is on the gable end of the house with only one story and 2ft over hangs and is south facing. I live in the PNW

I love the thought about it being a multi-generational door, but I've seen many bottom tracks go bad and need skins or replacement. I always assumed that was from rollers that started to seize up and wear the track away because they weren't rotating on their bearings any longer. Catching the roller wear early would be key (in my mind) to keeping the lower track in good shape. So when it no longer "slides like butter", replace the rollers. Do you agree, Matt? And replacing these rollers looks like they would only be doable by professional installers such as Cory. Thanks!

Greg Valunas I bet trash and dirt makes it's way down in there over time. It might help to vacuum out that track every 3 months or so too ya think?

Would to see more about the header. Great to have a level sill, but without a level and stable head for the width of the jamb, it's not going to matter much. Steel? wood? tips? Just did a 12' kolbe multislide, used lvl beams *just* for the door frame, floor above is supported by steel. That would not have been possible with this build and would love to know how you planned for it.

typically the way that you do these things is to check the building code to see what they prescribe (or check with an architect). if you can't find a prescriptive solution in the building code for your situation, then you have to consult with a structural engineer.

these are currently sold under the Marvin Ultimate line, which are solid wood frame doors with aluminum cladding for the exterior. Hard to say, but I got a quote on a very similar door. You're basically looking at anywhere from $2500-3000/linear foot. That's just the cost of the door. This particular door was built out of walnut, probably the most expensive wood option Marvin offers, so probably the upper end of the price range. There's a lot more to consider, cost-wise. You have to consider the structure needed to support these doors, because they ain't light (you're dealing with huge panels made of tempered glass). If the header that will be supporting the frame to these doors will be supporting weight above (i.e. if you have a two story building/home) you're going to have to support it with a steel beam unless it's not required by local building code. In my locality, code calls for steel which means: mucho dinero, amigo. Depending on who is installing the doors (not many Joe's out there are familiar with these) you're probably going to have to call a Marvin certified installer to make damn sure these are installed to Marvin's specifications if you want them to honor the warranty. Well that's gonna cost you an extra buck or two. Not sure if this particular door was ordered with a retractable bug screen but if you're planning on enjoying these doors during the nice weather you probably want to consider the screen unless you're comfortable with the local fauna moving into your house. That screen alone is several thousands $$$$. Lastly, depending on the sill you choose, you need to make sure there is enough overhang on the exterior to keep the elements away from these doors. In my case the doors are leading out to a covered porch and even then the Marvin guy strongly recommended going with the performance sill. Check the Marvin website, some of the sills are not rated to keep anything more than a light sprinkle from coming inside your house. By now you've figured it's not cheap achieving that nice custom look... like anything else in life.
