big tip buy parts that are likely to break now like handles, locks, latches, gaskets, seals, and rollers they will be way cheaper now and easy to get. Store them long term in a house repairs kit as a small broken item later can cause a major replacement for way more money a few years down the road.

Good idea. and if you are tiling a floor or wall, keep some for future repairs. It saves a lot of tears and frustration.

I work for a large window and door manufacturer here in Australia, we can supply parts for doors and windows we made over 40 years ago. This is one part of the value for money proposition when you look at the purchase price of things, that most people don't seem to grasp. There are many suppliers that can supply a cheaper option, when the rollers in your Chinese import are worn out in less than a decade and the only option is complete replacement, this becomes the most expensive option. As an example for less than $20 your 30 year old window will slide like the day it was installed if you had paid for Australian made in the first place. Maybe 20% difference and you got a window that can't buy parts for, odd kind of value.

If my handle breaks I'd just replace it same with all the lil wear and tear paets that most likely won't break with normal WD40 periodically. But I get your concept. Most people now a days don't know how to change a tire lol

My husband is the one who does all the house fixing projects but has little knowledge or experience doing some things. I want to learn how to do things around our house too, but correctly. I am interested in doing diy projects for myself. I learned something new in this video today, I did not know about the bottom bolt to adjust the wheel setting, so I tried it and it worked!! I am excited to show my husband when he returns home how I fixed the problem on my own...Yay! We have had issues with our sliding glass door dragging and making it difficult to open so instead we just don't use it anymore. Thank you

Nice job. I feel the exact opposite about sliding doors and having the option would NEVER have them again. I have properly installed French doors and have never had a problem opening and closing them and don't even have an overhang like you have. I've had these since our huge house remodel in 2008 and absolutely love them.

I agree sliding doors of this kind suck, they are ergonomically hard to use often the latches are very close to the door jamb, they wear out quickly especially in dusty environments and if you dont/forget to maintain the rollers on a ongoing basis they often destroy the surface they roll on then they become very difficult to move. Especially for older people these style of door become very heavy for them. Not to mention you just decreased your door width by over half... and they are a nightmare to seal air tight(near impossible with brush style seals) Dont get me wrong buying a good quality unit and have it installed properly and maintain them they are ok for an occasional use door, but I'd never install one at a main egress point.

Agreed, This is likely a regional thing. In cold climates you find out how much better seal you have with doors over a slider.
@pbalcommissioner3879

Her issues could have been due to not having the flashing at the bottom, thus causing the wood, and subsequent door to swell and not work properly.
@travisedwards9983
@travisedwards9983 3 жыл бұрын
@@st170ish All this will depend on the quality of the sliding door, many of the higher end ones eliminate any of these issues from being able to form. Usually when looking at a sliding glass door I start at $1800 per unit and go up from there. Something in the $700 range will be a sliding hunk of junk riddled with issues.
@st170ish
@st170ish 3 жыл бұрын
@@travisedwards9983 Yes definitely a highend unit is probably a lot better but you still can't seal them well and need ongoing maintenance... a thing most home owners nowadays don't do because there's no app to do it for them!

They are as deep as French doors, they both have a standard 4 9/16 jamb. You just need to remove the nail fin because this is a pocket replacement, not a new construction, so without a nail fin you can bring it all the way in flush with the interior wall board. In some cases an old door was installed the way she did it and tile was put in the floor against it and in this case you’d have to put a 3/4 PVC plank on the floor to set the door on to raise it so that you can bring it in flush. This door looks great though and she did an AMAZING job. I have pictures of thousands of doors installed if anyone needs any further tips or pictures for a better understanding just let me know, following her video will work out great for you though and look great too, just saying you don’t have to have that fir strip on the floor and all the extra trim.

Also I didn't know you could choose the opening side like that. That is very helpful to know for the way my house is laid out. as right now, it opens right to left, but I want to make the new one open the other way. - a very happy new subscriber

installing new sliding doors is always good, but I want to share with you my experience, I live in Orlando Florida, I contacted the Masterslide company with the problem of my sliding doors (if you ask, I will share the contacts) they replaced the rollers, installed a track cover and a new handle with a lock. Now my door is like new and I'm as happy as a child! And most importantly, I thought that I saved more than two thousand dollars! Just because repairs are cheaper!))) so think before ordering new ones. This is not advertising, this is my case.

Just FYI, if the mechanism breaks in the blinds the insulated glass unit can be replaced with one with new blinds in it, you wouldn’t need to replace the whole door, and when you call out your sliding direction it’s always, always, always, from the outside looking in, so this door is actually left to right or in window terms an XO. I’m a window/door guy, lol. Nice job, it looks pretty good for a Lowe’s special. Also if you wanted to keep the swing doors and go with a pair of vinyl or fiberglass doors that are out swing they actually will seal very nicely as long as they’re installed properly and of good quality, wood doors suck because they swell and require lots of maintenance that fiberglass and vinyl doors don’t.

Once I get the French doors I want, I will NEVER have a sliding glass door again so it surprises me that you prefer it. For me, it's probably because I live in coastal NC so sand is the thing. It gets in the track and ultimately ended up ruining the whole purpose of having a sliding glass door. I also don't like that I can't open both sides when the weather is nice and I have a screen cover. I am going to go for a french door that has a left door that locks top and side and then a free to open and close door that locks. Thank you for the great video as always. :)

The French door looks pretty good, maybe just needed some minor adjustments. Installed couple of them by myself, had to remove the doors and install just the frame first, too heavy for me. No problems, one was not protected, completely exposed to the weather. If I had to do it over, sliding patio doors. Reason is the French door swigs, swing in takes out some interior movement/space, swing out needs a landing.

Where you are, is the weather nice enough to leave the door open for periods of time? If so, you could have extended the slider to a triple slider, and possibly even disappearing sliders, where they either fold or open and are hidden behind a wall. Well done and surprised how easy it looked. I would have bet the mortgage that it would have been way more difficult. Thanks for sharing

@billyjack3580
@billyjack3580 2 жыл бұрын
@@derschwartzadder One good kick will open any inward-opening swinging door. French doors are one of the easiest to breach . With regard to sliding doors, the sliding panel should always be the inside, making lift-out much more difficult. Also, a couple of screws in the upper track of the sliding panel will limit upward movement, preventing lift-out, and can be easily removed for maintenance.

I feel like the issue with the double doors sticking wasn't so much the doors, as water getting in behind some part of the opening when it rains. The new flashing and caulking likely took care of the issue, whatever door would have gone back in. It is possible there's another leak somewhere causing that movement in the opening. Sliding doors are more forgiving of this, since a swelling floor will simply push it up into the bit of slack space in the upper track, and it would be unlikely to move so much as to 'top out'. If water is getting in somewhere, the amount of movement, plus other water damage issues, will only get worse over time until it's corrected.

April do you know if there is a sliding door made which will also operate like French doors so that you could still have a 6' opening for bringing in large pieces? It seems like there would be one that both panels would swing open for that purpose. I've never seen one though. I've thought about replacing my French doors with a slider but that would be an issue for me.
