I always avoided setting up my own gears because we had a dana 60 in our drag car , and My buddy was good at doing them , so I had him do them . Now My bro has a GMC Sonoma with a Ford 9 inch and I was going to have the new pumpkin set up but decided to look on youtube and see how tough a Ford is to do . I have the tools so watching your video made me realize this is not so bad . I have new parts so starting from scratch , but I like how you explain the process . You would be a great auto shop instructor , you make it clear and dont go too fast , great video , you have a new subscriber

Love the video it actually has given me the clarity and confidence to set my 9” up. You said earlier in a comment that you have this done for a Dana 44 too, any chance that will be posted soon?

Using the press for a vise when tightening the ring gear bolts is a good idea. The last solid spacer shim kit that i had it didn't captivate the shims like the one you have and the thinnest shims liked to walk out sometimes. I try to stay away from thin shims.

it’s much easier if you heat the housing a little and then hit the bearings and races in

I have a curry 9" rear. Can I take out and install a new yoke while rear end is still in the car?

Absolutely, just make sure you locktite the nut before you put it back on. They have spacers for preload not crush sleeves so it won’t change your pinion preload at all.

How do you know how much torque needed for the pinion nut with a solid spacer?
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 4 жыл бұрын
it’s 200 ft lb for the torque spec, but I have always just hit it with my 1/2” impact as tight as it will go, never had a problem.👍🏻

Tall gears are only low numerically, like 3.08, not 5.38.......

You could have sealed your splines with RTV when you assembled your pinion support. Just sayin.

You didn't set case spread ? You may need to find out about that for the proper side bearing preload. Those bearings are designed for load. ( I have been setting up 9 inches for 35 years.)
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 4 жыл бұрын
A case spreader is not needed on a 9”, it has adjusters that you tighten to get the preload on the side bearings “carrier bearings” that you need. But you should know that, you have been doing it for 35 years👍🏻

@@MuddyBeards4X4 what he was referring to is the preload applied to the bearings actually SPREADS the case and is measured on the outside of the caps and is how preload is adjusted....not you can't tighten them too much.

5.43 gears??? I just bought a Ford 9" with the big bearing Yukon third member you have and it has 5.38s. I know The 9" has some goofy ratios. I was gonna try 5.83 9" rear gears and front hp Dana 44 5.89 gears. It's a small enough difference it shouldn't cause any issues. People run Toyota 5.29s with Ford 5.38s and works just fine

Also my pinion nut looks exactly like yours and it has never backed off. It's sticking out past the threads on the pinched locking portion. If the nut has been torqued its definitely not coming off lol.

After digging into my axle it is in fact 5.43 gears with a Yukon grizzly locker and big bearing third memeber. I was told it was 5.38. The front is anyways 🤣. However They are compatible ratios so I'm GTG.

That test pattern you show @27:21 is not ideal. It's not even across the teeth. The pattern is low contact and is concentrated in the root of the drive gear tooth. Correct this by subtracting shim from the pinion, thereby, moving the pinion out away from the differential carrier.

I'm I the only one who cringes every time I see pinion nuts tightened with impact guns? If I had put that much preload on those bearings they would go to scrap.
@MuddyBeards4X4
@MuddyBeards4X4 3 жыл бұрын
Pinion bearing preload isn’t determined by how tight the nut is on a 9”. It has a spacer. It doesn’t have a crush sleeve. I never use crush sleeves. If the axle is supposed to have a crush sleeve I use a crush sleeve eliminator.
@davidtaylor9508
@davidtaylor9508 3 жыл бұрын
@@MuddyBeards4X4 When the spacer is too short the preload is determined by the the nut. You demonstrated this point in your video. If the spacer length is unknown it should always be good practice to use a non locking nut and slowly tighten by hand so the preload doesn't get extreme. Impacting the nut till it locks the bearing is terrible and can ruin your new bearing set.
