Nice to see that young fellow so deeply involved with such a precision and important job. I wish I was closer, restoration of such a wonderful machine is rewarding and important to maintain the heritage of steam and what operating those powerful monster was all about. Imagine, the same steam that comes from your kettle, is what drives that locomotive to pull 120 loaded cars.

The only thing I have off of 576 are memories of when I was a child climbing all over it at Centennial Park. I loved it so much that I bought a couple of t-shirts. I can't wait to take the first excursion on it (if I live that long). 🚂

That reamer/tap looks like a very specialized tool. You won’t find one of them down at Home Depot! Maybe not even at McMaster-Carr!

Old school tool from many moon ago. You either custom order them or buy them at tool auctions. I suppose a loco crew would have that in their collection of tools from other jobs, passed down. Reaming taps ain't as common as they used to be. The only place i intersect with one as a medium level, just above hobby machinist, is bicycle pedals. To thread the arm, you need a reaming tap.

not many are around if you want one of those get it from a gunsmith. Bruce at Steam Shop makes these so does Alex Beams both have gunsmithing on their resume so they know how to make these tools.
