They primary sell the Tel-Tru units for larger pits that already have a threaded insert welded to the smoker. The locknut provided allows you tighten it in the upright position after you've screwed it into the welded insert. Retrofitting like you did requires the additional hardware.

I just bought 2 of those suckers for my offset. Thirteen bucks each for those nuts is ridiculous when the stupid thermometer should come with it in the first place.

That accessory kit is ripoff. You can probably achieve the same results with a five cent washer and the original locking ring. Except that tightening that kind of ring tight enough will scratch through the porcelain inside. Very disappointing they don’t include better hardware with such a quality thermometer! Thanks for your videos!

I agree with you 100%. I did send it back and was able to get a similar set up from the local hardware store for under $2.00. Thanks for watching man.
