Hillman is right, the only nails you should have exposed are two on the bottom of the flashing, all the other nails should be under a shingle flap. Smear caulking on the two exposed nails as well.

He nailed to close to the edge of turbine it will leak he is not a roofer you can tell by the way he handled the shngles . He broke the shingle instead of pulling up the nails.

Trying to figure out the easiest and most cost effective way to vent my 16'x24' (384 sq ft) workshop shed. It has a low pitch slant roof. I haven't done soffits yet so was thinking vented hardie soffit but then I would need an exhaust. Will the whirlybird work with the soffit intake or can it be a stand alone system with no soffit/intake venting?

+Brandon68plus1 Very often there is a pitch gauge on the cardboard box of the turbine that you buy. You will hold the edge of the cardboard gauge on the roof and measure the pitch with a level held horizontal. Check on the cardboard box of the turbine you are thinking about buying and you will probably notice it, along with the instructions on how to use it.

My neighbor has one of these and when there is a breeze, it squeaks at a sharp pitch and drives me absolutely nuts! She's not very friendly and won't do a thing about it. Can you suggest anything I can do about it (without getting onto her shed)?

I have had surprisingly few complaints about rain getting in. But if you live in a dusty area (like the Arizona desert) they will bring in huge amounts of dust and dirt. It increases the airflow by a factor of 100 times? The dirty air comes in, slows down and drops the dirt and dust before it leaves. So in a dusty environment it's a trade off. A hot clean shed or a cool dirty shed.

Get up on the roof and spin it by hand. If the bearing is frozen then you might need to replace it. If it just turns hard you might be able to lube it up and get it spinning again.

+qhongnguyen Not if it's properly installed. Most of the time rain is accompanied by wind. As long as the wind keeps it spinning there is no way of water getting through. I have installed hundreds of these turbines and never had an issue with water getting in.

The only reason I ask is because when I am in the attic and looking a the whirlybird, I can see the sky outside. It just made me concerned.
