Two things I would have done differently 1) Put in two filters, one for sediment and the other one as a carbon filter. 2) Put in a bypass valve to if anything goes wrong with the filters, you can bypass them both if needed.

My tips for anyone, especially a home with well water: 1) Definitely agree having a main shut off and knowing where that is - critical in emergency situations that everyone knows where it is. 2) I would have installed the filter unit lower to make it easier for the homeowners to remove the filter each time. 3) While not impossible, it looks awkward to have to deal with that horizontal pipe near the filter. 4) Agree with previous comment about installing a bypass T so your outdoor connections bypass any filtering. If buying a home that will be on well water, I highly recommend building in the cost for whole house water filtration/treatment into your mortgage - and set aside an emergency fund for the well pump in case that goes - that alone can cost around $3k-$5k and until fixed means no water at all.

@Joe when you open the valve so quickly like that, it creates a sudden difference in pressure inside the pipes which is asking for trouble. Look up water hammer and its effects on pipes.
@bruizzz13

Joe let’s say there was a non tight fitting and someone opened the valve like that, the pressure from the water would literally push it out and you’d end up with a few seconds of city pressure coming out full force at you. It could also disrupt pressure in the remaining water lines connected. Overall just something no one should ever do, always open valves slowly

@blaster-zy7xx
@blaster-zy7xx Жыл бұрын
@@djshortsleeve9132 A bypass is not required for code, BUT you will HAVE to change the filters. The bypass allows you to leave the water on in the house while you just shut off the water just to the filter, then you change the filter and switch the bypass again. Without a bypass, you have to shut the entire water source off from where ever that is. This dude had to go out in the front yard to do it. Sucks in the winter under a foot snow. With a bypass you do it right at the filter. Put in a bypass.

SharkBites are junk. No real plumber would use sharkbites when they can do a threaded, soldered, crimp or pex fitting. I would never trust an oring like that with a press fit. I design and manufacture orings for a living. Those will easily fail in 10 years and flood wherever they are. In my opinion sharkbites should only be used for temporary jobs of less than 2 years. Also those sharkbites wont ground anything as they make contact with a rubber oring. He should have ran the ground wire to the main copper line above. This was 100% an amateur hack job. They should take this video down.

Watch out if you buy one of these Whirlpool whole home water filters... watch out for how tight the lid is screwed on because it's very difficult to take off. I bought one and tried to use the tool that comes with it and it broke the cheap plastic tool because it was screwed on so tight from the factory. The person at the store blamed pressure that built up over time... whatever, if the manufacturer didn't screw it on so tight in the first place it wouldn't be so bad at all. It was also recommended to get some lubricant for the seal in some other forums (apparently this lid has a really bad reputation). So I asked the guy at the store and he said they didn't even have any. Well, the forum also indicated some sort of "food grade" lubricant so I'm just using peanut oil and it's doing just fine like that. So after I returned it to the store, I insisted that they demonstrate that the lid could be removed. They were very helpful and obliged but it was extremely difficult to get the lid off. They took two pipes with 1" threaded ends and screwed them into the wholes. Just screwing the pipes in was difficult too. Once that was done we started torquing on the pipes and the guy at the store almost gave up because it was so hard but a couple more good torques and it finally came off.

@@K9_Leash_Holder Nothing special about Chloramine. Cities have been switching from Chlorine to Chloramine for decades. Chlorine in water has a short life. An open bucket of water will dissipate all its Chlorine in a couple of days. Chloramine on the other hand is Chlorine bonded to Ammonia and never dissipates to open air. Because water can set in city pipes for along time the Chloramine keeps the water safe to drink unlike Chlorine.

But then I thought when the rubber o-rings goes bad, and it will. That is going to be hard to replace and expensive. Check out the price for a few copper or brass fittings. They recommend jumping any of their connectors because the contact is insufficient to carry and electrical load in the event of a ground fault situation. He would have done better to just jump from the point where the water comes from the street to the point where the pipe goes into the house and skipped all the fittings entirely. Would have been two points of contact instead of the weird three points he did just to jump the filter housing. I love this show and Richard but that bonding could have been done better. He's a plumber, not an electrician.

@@usmc6153 One could fit a Tee either side of the filter and then fit pressure gauges on the Branches of those Tees then you can see the drop off in pressure as the filter becomes clogged rather than going for going down that ,"Change every few months" route.

I like this but if it was me I'd want something that could do more than what that one would do. I'd want something that had a special light that could help kill germs and bacteria as well as sediments. Having something that can clean and filter your cold and hot water would be nice. Where most water heater systems have the tenancy to have the metals leave the water heating system and then it gets in your homes water system and you drink it and wash your cloths and bathe in it. It would be nice to have a system that will filter both hot and cold water. This would be a good solution for someone who may have an apartment or rent a home and they can't start behind the water heating system and need to place it after the water heating system and the outlets such as sinks tubs and other fixtures. This was nice but I would have to say there has to be something much better out there. It would be even better to do the same type of system that could do all I have mentioned but has reverse osmosis. After that I'd put an in-line hot and cold filter before the tap and this way no matter what there will be clean cool crisp soft water each and every time.

You only need a UV light system if you actually believe you have bacteria in the water. So you'd only use a UV system for well water installations because city water already kills bacteria by treating the water with chlorine which kills them. So most will just filter the chlorine out because no one wants to drink pool water. Anyone that tries to sell a UV light filter system for city water is trying to upsell the crap out of them.

Sharkbites are meant for temp jobs of less than 2 years. No way would a real plumber use them. A real plumber would use crimp, threaded, pvc, pex, or solder. I design and mfg orings and I would never use a press fit oring like this for longer than 2 years. It will fail and leak.
@nova31337
@nova31337 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard various people say they had a terrible time with them, but I've also heard others that have had them successfully for 15+ years without issue. I think it largely comes down to how well the installation is performed and the environment they are used in. Most of the failures are because the pipes weren't properly squared at the end or had rough edges that destroyed the o-ring, or were inserted, removed, and re-inserted multiple times which reduces/removes the o-ring grease coating that helps form the seal. I think if the fittings are in a place that are easily accessible (i.e. not enclosed in walls) then they are fine. If you have a failure, it will most likely be a small leak, at which point you can just shut the water off, replace the fitting and go about your day in a few minutes. It handles better with PEX piping as the plastic tubing will reduce any water hammer that could mess with the fittings.

They always cut corners on these videos. Personally regardless of the fittings used I would have placed the filter lower and more to the right on the wall. I would have included a bypass around the filter and installed pressure gauges before and after the filter. It is always nice to know what pressure the incoming water to your house is at (it may need to be lowered) and the second gauge lets you know when the filter starts to clog lowering the pressure. Many of these inline filter housings (especially the clear ones) are only rated to 50 PSI and can fail as many cities supply water at much higher pressure. My house has water pressure close to 100 PSI coming from the city but I lower it to 70 PSI with a water pressure reducing vavle. If you use Sharebite fittings it is important to make sure the pipe ends are free of burrs, round, pipes are fully inserted along with the going straight into the fitting. It looked like his pipes were slightly angled which does not give a good o-ring seal. Sharkbites have no lateral support either and may need to externally supported so no strain is put on the fittings.
