I've had a yukon duragrip in my JK for over 2 years. It's one of the few things I've yet to break. Works great and I'd definitely buy it for another rig if I ever stopped breaking my first one.

What year JK do you have? I ask because I’ve been told you can’t run LSDs in the 2012 JKs and newer because it messes with the computer on the transmission or something, but I have yet to meet someone who’s actually done it.

@@bigzoffroad I've got a 2011 jk sahara. Front axle swap to a aftermarket dana 44 ultimate with elocker and stock rear with the yukon. The change to the 3.6 and as always more computer crap could be a issue. But I don't know for a fact.

I bought my first Jeep a few months back. I purchased a 2000 Cherokee sport. Came with a 3” Rusty’s off-road suspension lift. I personally got lucky, and bought from someone who took extremely good care of. I’ve hit a couple trails, but it’s my daily honestly. Very clean, and well maintained Jeep. I fell in love with it as soon as I test drove it. I’m learning the ropes on the Jeep side of maintenance. I’ve been a mechanic all my life. But I still learn new stuff every day.

I installed the Yukon dura grip in the 67 Chevelle rear I have in my 86 Pontiac Grand Prix, it works great. The original Eaton posi carrier broke in half.

On your carrier removal trick, the way I do it is with the wrench set up the same as you did and then just spin the driveline, no need for pry bar. Thanks for all the great videos

Im excited to see how the dura grip works for you. I just ordered one yesterday for my TJ d44 rear. I wanted a locker but couldnt justify the cost of selectable. About one month ago Iwelded the trac loc I had and also hated driving on road with it so dura grip here I come! I see alot of winter/ice roads and snow wheel. Im hoping it will act well with rear chains and not slide me off the trail when on funny angles with little traction.

Having a couple of mechanics in the family, I can tell you from personal experience, that mechanics often drive the most bailing wire and duck taped together vehicles! Their wives cars are pretty well kept, but their own are rolling nightmares! They figure, with some justication, that they can do a quick fix to keep it going, rather than spend a lot of time doing it right!

Colt, I hope you flushed the complete housing out down the axle tubes real good to get all of the metal. You should of showed the inch pound preload on the pinion bearings so the people watching will not over torque it. Unless that setup didn’t need it and the shims gave it the correct clearance.

just finished rebuilding a dana 44 front and rear a 60 front and a 14 bolt. all had some odd things with them and went way to long between tear downs. Tools I would also add, a set of slip fit setup bearings and a seal press.

Awhile back I heard of someone busting an axel in a really bad, (long way from civilization) place. For numerous reasons they just didn't try towing it out, but rather swapped in a new axel (not even sure if it was new) and drove it out. I know they had to cut it, and they weren't real fancy about how they did it. From what you're explaining, that could be what happened?

A trail fix is just that. You do what you have to to get back home...but..when you get back home...you should tear it down and fix it right so you have a reliable piece of equipment and not a crap shoot whether or not your trail fix will hold or even cause more damage. If what Colt found was in fact a trail fix it still should have been fixed properly. Just my ¢2.

Great video and very informative!! Question, I have a 2017 JKU Sahara, she’s my baby but I want a little more traction capability. She’s pretty much stock. I want some type of locker in the rear. What’s your thoughts on air lockers vs electric lockers and what I’m really curious about is the Torsten diffs? I’m mostly highway travel and some easy off road but I’m in the hills of Ky with occasional snow travel. I also snake some pretty big logs with snatch blocks for firewood. What gauge wire you carry around? I’ve always thought 14 gauge was a nice mid range and peace of mind especially if your toasting wires you’ll have a bit more resistance and you can atleast get home and not worry about catching on fire lol I think automotive is 18?

just a question, being the spool is solid but hollow and the spline kinda seal it closed could you have sitting your drive shaft on a rock n spinning it put enough lateral force on the bearing to kill it and not the broken piece of spline?

great video only problem back ground music was too loud ... I have trouble hearing and the music covered your voice ,, can you turn down the music level when you make the videos ??. just had to put new yokes on my CJ7 ,, amc20 rear end and a dana 300 transfer case ... drive shaft came out other day on the road ,, had the straps hold the u joints in ,, switched over too the u bolt style yokes ,, had to check pinion drag before I took it apart then add 5 inch lbs to that number when putting it back together ,,also put a new pinion seal in was a bit wet ,, greased the lip of the seal so it was not a dry start ,, sometime need to update the front yokes ,, I don't trust the strap clamps now for the u joints they stretch out then the u joints are loose ..

torsen* a made up word for "torque sensing", not torsion like a spring. they work decent, better than a clutch type LSD, but not as good as a locker

@@Garth2011 he had a spool, which is not a locker. lockers are actualy pretty forgiving with big tires and/or traction, its the input torque through the ring gear that drives them to lock while differential input torque greater than applied driveline torque is what unlocks them. I dont think the clutch type duragrip was the right choice an a torsen or a dana style powr-lok would have been better LSD choices as they have some dynamic locking action vs the static auburn style duragrip. posi is a gm only thing

No problem, maybe I didn't explain it good enough. The Yukon LSD is built stronger than most but I was concerned with driveability 1st, offroad 2nd. A torsion style locker still grabs on corners and creates a less desirable daily driver. Why I didn't do a selectable is because I always forget to turn it on until it's too late.

The helical gears act more like a full Detroit or Grizzly locker on the road which isn't what I was aiming for. They fall in between a clutch style and full locker in my opinion. I wanted road manors 1st, offroad 2nd.

I don’t think a limited slip is a good choice. After 275 ft-lb of transfer it acts like an open diff. So you get the most amount of power transfer when you need it the least and the least amount when you need it the most. There is a reason why Jeep chose lockers front and rear for the Rubicons. Lockers give you the best of both worlds. And you can turn them on and off whenever you want.

Theres a huge cost gap between a LSD and a selectable though, which is a big deal for alot of ppl on a budget. Plus the LSD is still way better than being open, you can feather the brake pedal when crawling to get both spinning if one stops. No doubt selectables are better but also like $1100. Another point, this is just opinion but front lockers are more effective than rear(think climbs) so if you only have money for 1 selectable, put it in the front and if the rear has a LSD you will go places.
