ELECTRIC FENCE CHARGER INSTALLATION GUIDE
AC, or plug-in, fence chargers work with a 110-volt outlet. They are the most common type of fence charger and come in a variety of power options. You can find AC chargers that are small enough to keep rabbits out of your garden, large enough to contain bison, and useful for everything in between. And, it only takes approximately 2 cents of electricity a day to keep these chargers operating.
This video will walk you through the basics of installing an AC charger.
AC FENCE CHARGER INSTALLATION
To properly install an AC fence charger, first identify an outlet location near your fence and near the area where you will be grounding your system. The charger, grounding system and fence should all be relatively close.
AC chargers should be installed in a clean, sheltered location. Keep the charger away from direct moisture and sunlight, and mounted off the ground.
PREPARING YOUR ELECTRIC FENCE CHARGER
Before you plug your AC charger in, do the following:
- Connect your grounding wire to the ground terminal, (look for the "Ground" symbol on your charger).
- Then connect that wire to a ground rod system using insulated wire and ground rod clamps.
- Next, connect the fence wire to the fence terminal. (Look for the "Hot Fence" symbol on your charger)
TEST YOUR AC FENCE CHARGER
After both connections have been made on your charger, plug the unit in. Your fence should now be ON since most chargers do not have an on/off switch. To confirm your charger is working, look for a light on the charger, and use a fence tester to determine if you have adequate voltage on your fence line.
Once you’ve confirmed adequate voltage at multiple points along your fence line, you’ve successfully installed your charger!
MONITORING YOUR AC CHARGER
AC fence systems are relatively hands off in terms of maintenance after installation. You’ll want to monitor your voltage levels occasionally. This helps get ahead of potential voltage loss on your fence lines from external factors like weed growth, weather related events, or other objects pulling the fence power down.
With proper installation and maintenance, you’ll have a safe and successful animal containment solution for years to come…

Plug in everything: Close together; In a clean shelter; Near the outlet but _not_ near the grounding system that would typically be associated with a building’s electrical installation; Use 30 linear feet for the ground rods; and Connect it to an outdoor fence. Can you use this with an extension cord? We don’t have wired electric out to our barn, but we do have the required ground rods out therefrom using solar chargers. (I have no idea how people with smaller, wired barns would be able to make the spacing requirements work.)
