Awesome video! Just one question: I'm looking at doing this same set-up on my new Jon boat and was wondering about your seat height with those extra thick seats and the pedestals you used. Do you feel comfortable at that height? Are your feet planted firmly on the floor? Thanks so much for the help.
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 4 ай бұрын
I am 6 feet 1 inch tall, and the seat height is comfortable for me. My feet rest flat on the floor with a slight knee bend. The boat is only 10 feet long with a 36-inch width. You need to be cautious while leaning over to the right or left because the boat is more unstable with the extra height. Even when sitting down on the bench seats, the boat is not as stable as the larger Jon boats. I hope this information is helpful to you." Thanks for watching my video! Norman

Great video. When you are driving to the lake do you remove the seats and install when you get there. Being that they slide and there’s no stops on the ends of the bracket. Thanks
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 10 ай бұрын
In my previous boat journeys, I have not removed the seats while traveling. Instead, I fold the back down and use the snap to secure them. The seats have never slipped out of the brackets. It requires some force to slide them out completely. However, to ensure safety, especially on long journeys with rough or unpaved roads, I would recommend keeping the seats in the brackets and securing them with a rope. Thank you for such an informative and well detailed video pertaining this seat mounting system. I recently purchased and restored a 1968 DuraCraft 15' 3 bench seat semi-v fishing boat. I have been puzzled and only guesstimating what these mystery rails were. Unfortunately the retainer rails are not present. I need to locate at the least 2 retainer rails preferably 32" in length equalling the length of the existing locking rails. I will settle for shorter to be able to mount the seats if necessary. Are you able to purchase only the bracket and retainer or is it the entire setup which would cost much more I would assume. Again, thank you for your video. This was exactly what I was needing and hoping to see. Happy fishing. I can't wait to get this boat in the water. Im pushing her with a 1958 Johnson 18hp. I've built up an exact replica, color and all to my grandfather's old boat. He passed in 1978 when I was only 4 but I remember so much about my very short time with him. I remember fishing with him once. His boat was around until grandma sold it when I was 10 or 11 so I remember it very well and have a few photos. I've painted my boat to match his and set up just as his. I even have the police car spot light mounted just the same. The seats in my boat were poorly mounted to 2x8s that were held down with a ton of Gorilla Glue. It was a sad sight but I seen the potential and I made the ol girl look brand new. Im stenciling "Grandpa's Pride" on the stern.

Sounds like you are really having a good time restoring your grandfather’s boat. I know how proud you will be when you get the boat in the water. I restored a 1957 Borum Safari Wooden Boat and a 1957 Holsclaw trailer several years ago, I really enjoyed bringing that old boat back to life. I took it to a boat show and a nice gentlemen told me his father had one just like it and it brought back great memories when he and his father were fishing together. He asks me if I would sell it. So I thought for minute and said yes...he really wanted the boat, it made him so happy. About the seat brackets: Wise makes a seat bracket 33 inches long. (Wise 8WD70 - Sure Mount Aluminum Seat Bracket) but I’m not sure if you can purchase the retainer bracket only, however, you can purchase the sliding bracket separately. I know you can buy the wise seat kit that includes the retainer bracket & sliding bracket for about $32.00. Check online and search Wise Seat mounts. Thanks for watching my video I appreciate the comments. Good luck on your boat restoration. Norman

@@NormanGooch It really is a huge enjoyment restoring Grandpas boat. In a way it feels like he's right here with me working on the old boat. There were 3 coats of paint on it not including the remnants of the worn and faded paint from when it was new. Theres nothing attractive about old, peeling latex paint covered with a runny rattle can job. Seeing her now all fresh and "new" again is a really good feeling not just because the boat was grandpas which is a big part of it but also the work that goes into the entire process. Im already looking for another boat to restore because this was just a lot of fun and I've had so many ideas going thru my head while working on this boat that I want to implement on another. I think this created a new hobby i never thought that I'd ever be interested in. Never crossed my mind to restore a boat and now I can't wait to find another. I will be hitting the water with my dad this coming Saturday. I found the seat brackets on Amazon, not sure if I absolutely have to have the retainer installed to use the boat with the seats only on the bracket locked into the slide rail. Im guessing it would be fine to use without the retainers until I can find and order the retainers. I look forward to seeing more of your restorations. Perry
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 2 жыл бұрын
Perry, The retainer bracket is a safety component that keeps the seat from moving forward or tipping forward. The slide-in bracket only holds the seat into position. If you hit something in the water and it stops your boat quickly, the seat can flip forward and possibly throw you or your passenger out of the boat without a retainer bracket holding the rear of the seat mount plate. You can make your on retainer bracket out of anodized aircraft aluminum. You will need a bender/break to make the front rise on the bracket that sits over the end of the seat mount plate. Thanks, Norman

Great video. I have two questions. First the benches on my boat have a lip. I assume I have to put some spacer in to fill the gap which may mean longer screws needed. Second what are you thoughts about the see vibrating out when empty but running full speed with say a 25hp on a 14 ft boat?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 2 жыл бұрын
Robin, The brackets will need to be installed on a flat surface. If the lip causes the bracket to have any gap between the seat and the mounting bracket you will need to level the contact surface. I would not use spacers to raise the bracket, they will allow too much tension force on the screw holes. Use a flat piece of aluminum (or pieces depending on the height of the lip) cut the same width and length as the mounting bracket. Drill matching holes and use screws long enough to go through the mounting bracket, aluminum pieces, and into the bench seat. The most important thing to remember is to not overtighten the screws when installing anything in aluminum bench seats. Never tighten down with a power driver, hand tighten the last 1/4" by hand only until snug. I suggest you apply Vibra-TITE VC-3 Threadmate on all screw fasteners. This will help keep the screws from loosening due to vibration. You can buy this product from Amazon or most auto-marine stores. It works very well, I use it on all my boats. I hope this helps, Thanks, Norman

I know this video is old but I think using rivets to secure these brackets would probably be the route I’d take
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch Жыл бұрын
I have done it both ways and had success with both rivets and screws. The current seat brackets are now 3 years old and the screws are still tight and secure to the boat seats. The purpose of this video was to follow the manufacturer's instructions that came with the seat brackets so people who bought the set could see how to install them. So to keep it simple, the video just follows the instructions that came with the brackets. Thanks for watching my video. Norman

What length brackets are those ? Do you find that center mounting gives enough room to off set seat from motor to steer and then back to center for fishing or woukd a longer bracket be more beneficial?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch Жыл бұрын
Joshua, The small 10ft Jon boat I installed the seat mounts on needed to be centered on the bench seat to help keep the boat stabilized in the water. The boat is very light and only 36" wide across the bottom. You can't lean or sit too close to one side or the other without the boat rocking side to side. I can slide the seat to the left or right far enough to operate the 3HP motor I use for this boat. You could easily offset the brackets on larger and wider Jon boats to make additional room and easier access to the motor and tiller. The brackets are 15" long and are long enough for most applications. Thanks for watching my video Norman

Do you think the rear retaining bracket is absolutely necessary? I noticed the new Ranger MPV 1652 has these, but only have the front brackets installed on the front edge. Considering this on my duck boat... Thanks!
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 3 жыл бұрын
The reason for the rear retaining bracket is to keep the seat from rising up off the bench during a sudden stop. If you hit something in the water that causes the boat to stop immediately, it could throw you forward and out of the seat. I haven't seen the new Ranger, but they must have something within the mounting bracket to keep the seat in place for safety reasons. I would use the retainer bracket unless the seat will remain in place during sudden stops. Thanks, Norman

Norman - is there a weight limit with this product? Also can the seat be easily removed by sliding it out?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 3 жыл бұрын
Bob, I don’t believe there is a weight limit on the mount since the bench seat carries the weight. Any weight limit would be the weight limit of the boat’s weight capacity of the bench seat itself. Also the seat that is used to mount on the swivel or pedestal will have a weight limit based on manufactures specifications. The boat seats are easily removed by just sliding off the mount. The seats lock in place with your weight, you can stand up and slide the seat left or right to a new position, when you sit back down it locks in place to the new location. Thanks for watching my video Norman

I have Lund bench seats that are wood topped not aluminum like Jon boats. I'm having trouble deciding the best mounting system. The benches are foam filled and the top cannot be removed so I cannot access inside. Additionally a couple of our riders weight 275 to 300. I was not going to use pedestal, just moint swivel to bench. Do you think the rails with those screws will hold a seat in good place better than non rail mounting?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch Жыл бұрын
This depends on the condition and the thickness of the wood top. If the wood is thin, the screws will need to go through the wood and into the aluminum If the edge of the wood around the bench seat is thick enough, you could attach the front rail using screws. The rails will have more holding power than the swivel plate. Since I can’t see the bench seats and take measurements it is difficult to determine the best way to mount the seats. With the riders weight you have, I would recommend using rivet nuts if you can gain access to the aluminum surface. I hope this helps Thanks Norman

My seats run the opposite direction of yours(split seat). Do you think my weight will hold me in place or will i constantly be friigin to keep in position?
@NormanGooch
@NormanGooch 3 жыл бұрын
When you position the seat in the mounting plate and slide left or right where you want to be, once you sit down on the seat, it will not move. The front plate interlocks with the base mount and your weight keeps it into position. When you are ready to change seat position (left or right) you simply get off the seat and slide, then sit back down to lock it into position. Thanks, Norman

If you center the seat on the bench you cannot operate an outboard that is also centered
@NormanGooch

You are correct, depending on the size of your boat. The seat can slide left or right on the mounting plate. With my 10ft 36" wide Jon boat I use a 2.0 H.P. Honda outboard. I can slide the seat to the left on the centered mounting plate and be able to use the the throttle with no problem. Larger engines will need to be centered on the transom for proper mounting strength and balance. With larger boats and engines, you can install the mounting plate off center to use the larger outboard and keep the boat balanced. Thanks, Norman

Yes, the seats can swivel. You also have the option to mount the seat to be fixed in place. To enable the swivel function, you need to purchase and install a swivel plate underneath the seat. The tilt-and-slide rails are affixed to the boat, while the swivel plate is attached to the seat. A seat pedestal is then attached to the swivel plate, and the rail mounting plate is attached to the pedestal. Thanks for watching my video! Norman
