HOW-TO Install An Auger Cable On Your Snowblower
If your snowblower isn't blowing snow anymore it's possible you need a new auger cable!
In this video I show you how to easily install an auger cable on your MTD, CUB CADET, YARD MAN, YARD WORKS, CRAFTSMAN & TROY-BILT snowblowers. Although some snowblowers will be different the same principle will apply on most machines.

Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) videos to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers and zero turn mowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, zero turn mower, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

How great is this video? I'm a 55-year-old grandma, and I just changed the auger cable on my Yardworks blower with a rusty old socket set and a pair of pliers. It took me longer to track down a replacement cable than it did to change it. This video was a life saver! Thanks Dony, totally subscribed to your channel now.

Thank you! I'm not a mechanical guy and if I had a way to transport my three stage tracked CubCadet snowblower I would have taken it in for the repair. So glad I found your video, you saved me the cost of someone else fixing it and gave me the pride of doing it myself!

Don, John from Cornwall, Ontario here. You were right! The toughest part of the job was inserting the new cable. Between my neighbour and myself it was a quick job. If I recall, he has an old MTD purchased under the Home Hardware label more than 12 years ago. Thanks to your videos we are keeping it on the job year after year. Enjoy your Sunday.

Well done, and well explained. Lots of folks might not realize why you remove some of those bolts with an impact driver but use a small ratchet to put them back in by hand. As you so well demonstrated, you don't need to feel the torque when removing a fastener, but it is critically important to not overtighten those fasteners when putting them back in, ESPECIALLY when it's going in sheet metal, because it's so easy to strip them out and if that happens, you'll most likely be up ships creek! You do a great job explaining what you are doing. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for this video! I was trying to follow the guide in the manual and spent 2 hours struggling. I was not a happy camper. The manual for my snow blower is the pits :( I found your video when I was desperate for help and after watching it, it only took me TEN MINUTES to replace the broken cable and I was able to clean out the end of my driveway of the 4 foot bank the snow plough had left after a major snow storm yesterday/overnight . THANK YOU a million times over. I now have your site saved.

Great video ,well filmed. So it's Sunday and that spring breaks exactly as in the video ,no place is open to buy a new cable with a spring. Or you are just a cheap SOB like me. You can make a new loop on the end of the old spring. Just put the spring in your vice and heat the spring with a torch ,get it red hot. You make a template of the old spring on a piece of paper. By heating the old spring to red hot you can bend and pull out the end with a pair of pliers to make a new loop. Does not have to be perfect ,but you have it close to your template. Voila your back in business and it cost you nothing but your time.

Excellent video, two things that I ran into with my cub cadet 2x model was the fact that I had to set up a vice to loosen the bolt on the front pulley and the back bracket was bending when I went to loosen that bolt. I'd advise everyone to just be careful so you don't break that part trying to crack the bolt.

Hello Don~ I found this video very helpful. It enabled me to change a broken auger cable on my White MTD snowblower without great difficulty. Your video is clear and thorough. A good suggestion to place the Z-hook into the lever/handle prior to affixing the lower bracket to the frame of the machine. I did have to make an adjustment to the tension of the cable at the bracket after trying the snowblower's operation briefly. Thank you.

Corrosion is the problem. The high strength steel and high residual stresses due to the bend. Mine broke in an identical manner after 2 seasons but only about 10 h on the machine. There is a lot of salt spread at the end of my driveway so mine looks about 10 years old near the chute.

Yea didn't they just come out with 3xers like 2 years ago. Sad the junk they make. It may have been though that that part is installed by the owner when he gets his machine and that he installed it too tight. Strange part is you would think it would break where the spring actually bends vs. right where it did. Yet maybe something was rubbing on it there based on having it too tight.....

Don, your videos are always clear, well lit and helpful. I have a MTD 10.5 snowblower and have tried to find out how to adjust the auger lock which is supposed to allow you to keep driving forward as you take your hand off the left lever to adjust the direction of the snow chute while the left lever stays down and snow continues to be thrown. My auger tends to stop throwing when I remove my left hand so it obviously needs an adjustment to keep it locked on but I cannot find anything in the manual how to do so. An online search finds similar questions but no real solutions. With the winter we're having in Ontario this year, any help would be appreciated!
