ALWAYS USE HIGH OCTANE FUEL WITH NO ETHANOL TO PREVENT DAMAGE AND COSTLY CARBURETOR REPAIRS ON YOUR SNOWBLOWER!
@TripReviews4 жыл бұрын
donyboy73 I learned that the expensive way! 25 hp Johnson outboard 2 stroke. Bought new in 2005 it was at the 3 years old age but always used fuel stabilizer, winterized it properly in the fall. Because I used regular fuel with ethanol I ended up having to have the carb rebuilt and some other cleaning up of the fuel system. Of course this was after I had tried my back yard mechanic skills on it so it cost me a few more bucks than it would have if I hadnt🤬. So the mechanic explained it this way, it’s not like your car where you drive it daily, with an outboard you get your gas, it sits partly empty, the air temperature gets cool then it gets hot out. Condensation develops and it gets in your gas then messes up your carb and runs like #$&. I replied I use conditioner, he said doesn’t matter the conditioner absorbs the water but it’s still there in the gas tank or in your gas can. Buy shell premium fuel as it has no ethal alcohol in it (Ontario Canada.) The boat is long gone now but ever since only buy the non ethanol fuel for my snow blower and lawn mower now that I know better.
@DarkpawTheWolf4 жыл бұрын
@@TripReviews "... it’s not like your car where you drive it daily,..." Even in your car, you should NEVER use "regular" gas, if it has up to 10% ethanol in it. That shit just builds up carbon over time on your valves and makes small buildup on injectors, and just generally clogs everything up and makes a mess. Ethanol should be banned for blending in gas (and in some places in the US, it is, thanks to SEMA). They use it pretty much everywhere in Canada. You need to get Super, to have 0% ethanol in it.

@@DarkpawTheWolf they sell premium here in Canada with ethanol in it. You have to search for a station that specifically says non ethanol 91. Everything below or above 91 has ethanol too though. So people buy 93 or 94 thinking it’s even better but it’s worse in anything with a carb. I’m starting to think it’s on purpose to screw up everyone’s small engines enough to force people to consider electric small power equipment.

My parents gave me a snowblower that had been sitting in their garage for a few years (with old gas still in it), and when I fired it up it was surging and would only run with the choke fully on. I disassembled the carburetor and followed all of your steps and it is now running perfectly (I removed my carb and did the work on my bench). All of the gas in the carb was dark yellow and that little brass screw under the plastic cap was totally clogged. I have a set of micro drill bits but I couldn't free the clog by hand so I had to use my drill press to get through the crud! We have a blizzard coming this weekend and now I'm ready. @@jamesbarlowjr.3762 The "lots of blue smoke" and "won't start/run" are common symptoms of a leaky needle and seat in the carb. I have to say in all the years working on machines just changing the spark plug has never fixed any issue. The jet at 12:15 is the low speed idle jet for those watching that do not know, it is just about always this jet that becomes clogged, or the idle circuit within the the carburetor body itself. Some times they can be an absolute bear. Terrible design that affects just about every tecuntseh motor out there. You have to pass a single strand of copper wire through the idle circuit holes in the carb, and run them through an ultrasonic cleaner most of the time. If that does not work, some times an older machine just needs a bit more gas to idle. Since the low speed idle jet is not adjustable (on the model you show) the idle jet can be drilled out slightly with a micro drill

A perfect repair method for surging carb, except for one thing.... You must clean the low speed jet and circuit with carb cleaner and straw with the bowl cover off. A lot of dirt will sometimes migrate during the low speed circuit cleaning, into the bowl, re-clogging the main jet. The smaller orifice in the low speed jet is a #78 drill bit.

Thank you for showing the part numbers. Saves me time by not having to google model & serial #’s. Carb problems can be avoided by putting the engine “To bed” properly at the end of the season. However, I do my best mower and blower shopping from the trash at the beginning of each season, due to dirty/clogged carbs. If it has compression and spark, it will run with either a good cleaning or cheap carb rebuild kit.

Might have been one of the older toro mowers that had an auto full throttle setup, where as soon as it started up it reved itself up until it bounced off the limiter, continuously. Only way to keep it from doing the up down, up down was to put it under load mowing and then it would stay off the limiter and stop bouncing up down. Very annoying when your mowing short grass and can’t put enough load on the engine to keep it from bouncing off the limiter. They had the same setup on small snowblowers.

My craftsman snowblower was like that when new. I was told it is normal for the Tecumseh engine. After about 15 years using the machine the only way it would run is at full throttle. I got a carb kit, cleaned serviced the carb. It was amazing to have such a nice running machine.

Another GREAT video!!! Thank you! I use ethanol-free gas with my Ariens snowblower and after every use, I drain the gas from the carburetor bowl via the drain bolt on the bowl. The new carburetor bowl you installed(which did not come with the kit) did not have the extra drain bolt used for draining fuel from the bowl. 1) Why didn't you reinstall the old bowl? I would think being able to easily drain the gas from the bowl an easy and important step to help keep the machine from having fuel issues. 2) Am I correct? That machine did not have a fuel shut off valve but vise grips could be used to pinch the fuel line so one could drain the bowl. (or one could install a shut off valve) From what I saw, the problem of the surging might have been solved by just cleaning the jets without a carb rebuild. For the average Joe like me, I would have cleaned the 2 jets before doing a rebuild. 3) Is that a common sense thing to do?

I have had many small engines with carb problems. I’ve tried coming them in carb cleaner but with mixed results. The only thing I have found that works well is a heated sonic cleaner with aircraft grade simple green added to the water. Also works great on firearms. Another option is prevention. Using high quality fuel without ethanol (it draws moisture) and draining the carbs if the tool won’t be used for a period of time.

Very well produced video, only would add a few suggestions. Should clean area around the idle jet before removing to prevent debris from entering, plus spray cleaner through the idle jet passage while it's removed. While the bowls off it's a good idea remove the main and pilot jets for cleaning if equipped. Also, Honda carbs main tube has many tiny holes through the length that get restricted. I'm probably too meticulous to make money doing small engine repairs as I tend to leave no stone unturned.

If I may add, I find that ‘electrical contact cleaner’ does a great job of removing accumulated particulate and ensures excellent power contact. Your videos are great! As a lady operator, I appreciate all the information I can glean from the experts. Bless you!

I've had really good luck with Berryman B-12 cleaning up dirty carbs. I made a mistake a few years back and had left the fuel turned on for both of my 30" snowblowers all year long. They ran like garbage, in fact I couldn't start them with the hand pull, I had to use the electric start for the first time ever. They had a terrible loping engine speed and would only stay running when fully choked. I ran an entire can of Berryman through each of them. After about 40 minutes of running they were good as new and back to starting on the first pull. I learned about Berryman from Vice Grip Garage and it's impressed me a lot. Doesn't hurt that it's fairly cheap compared to Seafoam and others.

this was awesome! I am not mechanically inclined, but this video encourages me to try and get my snowblower up and working again!...It was running when I parked it but will not start now...

i solved my engine surging by pouring an entire can of seafoam into the fuel tank and topped off the tank with 91 octane fuel , a few cranks of the starter she fired right up , after several minutes of running , 3 loud back fires , and the engine was purring like a kitten , and continued to run like a kitten

Wow, the detail n time you took in this video was great! I'm a Truck and Trailer mechanic myself but Im shy around small engines, I look forward to watching more of your videos, like I'm realy blown away with the care and detail in this video. Keep up the great work! ( I also wonder if that's a Quebec or Acadian accent, i'm on the east coast myself?)

I got rid of the surging just by cleaning the screw you show at 12:00 minutes. In my books, you have achieved your goal - "I want "DON THE SMALL ENGINE DOCTOR" on KZbin to save you time, frustration and most importantly, MONEY!" Thanks so much.

I had a lawn mower that surged. I followed this procedure, and I found that there was mud and water in the carburetor bowl. I don't know how the mud entered the carburetor, but draining the fuel from tank, rinsing the inside of fuel tank, and spraying the carburetor with carb' cleaner solved the problem.
@vector69774 жыл бұрын
The mud would be the gasoline turning to varnish.

this fixed mine as well. runs as steady as when it was new only took about 25 minutes start to finish clean up. Thank you!!

I have a 2" and 3" long neck funnels with a attached rubber hose to catch the fuel when taking the bowl nut and bowl off. It then drains into a pan without getting fuel all over everything. Also a Sonic cleaner works wonders. Love your channel!!

Great explanation. Had same issues with snowblower/lawn mower - ethanol gas ( loves water ) was the problem. Use 91 Octane( non-ethanol ) gas - resolved the problem asap. cheers

Great video! Quick question - I see the rebuild kits on amazon for $10 and a whole new carburetor is $15. Would it make sense to just buy a new carb instead of rebuild? Would that be easier?
@orenwolfe65063 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is much easier and cheaper to buy and install a $15 carburetor.

Thank you Donnie boy for another highly informative snow blower carburetor repair. About the only suggestion I would have is to always first check your oil and if it's dirty to replace the engine motor oil. If there's any missing screws or nuts or bolts on the machine to make sure that all those are also replaced. Lastly I would have checked the cables and gave them a shot of WD-40 to make sure that all of the linkages are lubricated along with the cables. I think this extra work may have only added about 10 or 15 minutes to the job, but would have made the repair more complete. Thanks again and take care.

Thanks for another great video. I've learned a ton from your videos. My small engine equipment is all I have left to tinker with. We bought an electric car, so no tinkering with that.

I just did the same repair on my own Craftsman snowblower, which is 40 years old by the way! It has fully adjustable low and high speed jets on the carb, so it has a few more parts and so a little more work was needed to get the job done.

alternately a pin drill can be used th clean carb ports. the back of the drill so as not to leave chips or enlarge the metering hole. by the way well done vidios. I thought I was back in auto shop...

thanks you this was very, very helpful. tilting the blower up made very easy to work on. I used a safety pin and a sewing niddle to open up the holes. worked perfect!

so, the surging could have been fixed by clearing the jets in the second part?. the carb kit was not really the fix, just nice to do while you had it

I know the customer asked for a rebuild kit, would have interesting to see if the surge would have been cured by adding K100 and cleaning the side jet?
@jackpatteeuw92445 жыл бұрын
Not likely. My experience with single cylinder engines with similar carbs, the surging is caused by a clogged primary/idle jet (the second one that Dan cleaned). This jet need to pass fuel all of the time, even at full throttle. If not, the engine runs too lean, stumbles and then the governor catches it before it dies completely and over revs the the engine. The secondary/high speed jet (bowl nut) and/or the emulsion tube are rarely the culprit. The real problem is, for many years, the primary/idle jet has not NOT accessible. The only way to clean it is to disassemble the carburetor and soak it in a bucket of cleaner or better yet an ultrasonic cleaner.
@Neighborhoodgo2guy5 жыл бұрын
I've cleaned many a carbs, it's amazing what just a little debris will cause. I always tear down and clean out like Donnie did in the video. Just would have been interesting to see if that might have worked is all. Thanks for the reply Jack👍
