That way can walk on roof and has give as to not puncture rubber. They use Lvoc bonding adhesive and at edges uses c-6 or c-8 alum drip with a self stick cover tape 5" or 6" wide and you prime and stick down to cover drip edge to rubber transition. Some folks get really picky and epdm edge caulk both sides of tape. I dont think you need too, but, they prefer to never get a call back. I am just curious as not needing that cover tape with the PVC edge and overlapping rubber is much cheaper. 5"x100 cover is over $300 a roll

@gregmacmillan73854 жыл бұрын
So I just fitted one of these today on a cabin/summerhouse. Mine was just over 5m x 4m. As others have said this makes it look pretty easy. A 1.1mm thick 5m x 4m epdm roof weighs 55kg/120 lbs (according to the shipping label). Getting it on to the roof was a major pain. Particularly without catching it on the osb3 edges I roofed with. I spent around 30 mins getting it on the roof and the in the right place and lined up properly. This was pretty difficult and mainly involved removing the big ripples and folds, then getting the rubber broadly square to the roof, harder than it sounds without falling off when you are standing on the rubber itself. Another 30 mins letting the rubber 'relax'. Around 30-40 mins to get the water based glue on in 2 'halves' and the edges were another 30 minutes or so. Most of the time was spent moving the rubber around, the glue went off pretty quickly. Moving the rubber is difficult, and with one person it hard to fold it as neatly as is shown here. The water based adhesive was initially like an ice rink (standing on the rubber sliding over the adhesive), then after 10 minutes it quickly became very tacky and hard to lift/reposition. The border contact glue was ready pretty much instantly, making it quite hard to manage as it was sticking the rubber after 1-2 minutes and hardening in my roller tray after 5-10 minutes. It stuck the rubber to itself if I didn't fold it back carefully. You need to be clear in your mind what you are doing and go for it because as soon as the glue is down the clock is running. This is early autumn in Scotland with 75% humidity at 13°C. Remember the glue won't work properly if it's wet, humidity over 80%, or if the temperature is under 5°C or going to fall under freezing in the next 48 hours. Not much use in Scotland! So I'd relied on this video as a guide for fitting a 'standard' 1.1mm firestone epdm kit. But I had no idea what the timescales were for the glue drying etc and I couldn't find this information anywhere. I'd read somewhere the contact glue would take 15-30 minutes to tack off... But that wasn't true for me. Hopefully this helps someone.

Can we apply this membrane to metal roofing?
@bladewraith2 жыл бұрын
Hi. We have a 1920s house which has a flat concrete roof. Due to the porous nature it is 'weeping' through to the room below. We have had two quotes that are roughly in line; the difference in their approach is this: 1. Wants to install batons across the concrete like joists. Apply smart ply and then a rubber membrane on top. 2. Wants to screw osb direct to the concrete and then rubbber sheet on top. Which is better?
@tomcullingford29622 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, I’m pleased to hear both are installing ply before the CLASSICBOND is installed. There’s an important question relating to insulation that needs to be answered. Is this concrete roof over a heated room or is it a garage? Introducing an unventilated gap under the smart ply might be a bad idea as condensation could build up on the underside of the boards. I would suggest they install a vapour barrier directly under the board as a minimum to stop any residual moisture in the concrete rotting the boards and ideally if it is a heated room underneath then installing a vapour barrier followed by PIR insulation and then osb3 on top would give you the best solution.
@bladewraith2 жыл бұрын
@@tomcullingford2962 thanks for your response. It was originally two outside cupboards; one is now an inside toilet and the other half still an outside store. Neither are heated, but obviously the toilet half will acquire some heat from the utility room. So if the OSB is screwed directly to the concrete does it still need a barrier to prevent condensation?
@tomcullingford29622 жыл бұрын

Don't see why you have to use a different adhesive for the perimeter?
@williamdafoe35673 жыл бұрын
It's a much stronger adhesive and protects against wind damage. The last thing you wants is a solid piece of rubber flying off and exposing your entire roof to rain and hail.

would this be suitable on a car port?

My garage is a double which is attached to another neighbours garage. How would i achieve a join with their felt? Also under our felt it is wooden planks instead of boards
@Rubber4Roofs3 жыл бұрын
Hi JM. One way to join to the felt is a termination bar. I’ve put the link in here to a video. www.rubber4roofs.co.uk/how-to-install-a-termination-bar-video-and-installation-guide

Hi, I have installed this epdm rubber roof with trims on osb3 t&g. I very small pin holes/ nearly visible to the naked eye in the epdm, can a epdm roof be coated with something to stop it leaking? Thanks
@sheasierzega15993 жыл бұрын
Gaco roof patch is solid. Have stopped some big leaks. A little pricey but it works
@imhungry23873 жыл бұрын
Yes just patch it

My neighbours never used glue on their flat roof. I wonder, what will happen 🤔

They had two guys pull the folded rubber lol

They charge a left kidney and a lung to do this, better off to do it yourself, remember to play good country music and have cold drink available...

Hi @ironjohn5914 Whilst we agree it is easy to DIY on many simple freestanding buildings, you can't beat the experience of a trained installer on more complex projects with a lot of detailing work required such as Skylights, Pipework and Joins etc.

Eeewww water based glue? Trash! I have installed multiple roofs with epdm rubber some over 500 sq, I'm talking 50-70 10×100' rolls, I have worked with multiple manufacturers, Carlisle, Firestone, John's Manville, Garland, etc put the roof on the convention center in Columbus ohio lots of high profile jobs, do yourself a favor and do not use nails on your edge metal and go with a heavy gage metal for your drip edge with a cleat, NO NAILS use screws to fasten your cleat through the face of the cleat into the side of your nailer, attach your drip edge metal to your cleat and fasten with 1.5"-2" screws through the top of the dripedge to the top of your nailer and strip in the metal with epdm cover strip, also don't cheap out and glue straight to the deck, do yourself a favor and get .5" HD iso board to fasten to your deck, this shit is not designed to be glued straight to a wooden deck like this, the high density board has a paper face on it designed to take the glue and adhere properly, if done right these roofs will last 20 years +, done like this aka (the Amish style) you will probably have issues in 10-15, also there are things such as wind enhancements that should be done on the underside of epdm rubber called russ strip that will keep heavy winds from working your material loose around the perimeter of the structure and then all that water based glue will separate after the perimeter is loosened up and all them nails you used for your metal will go with it.... btw I'm a industrial roofing foreman in the unionif you wanna know my credentials

Thanks Dusty, some great comments on there! The system is Carlisle. In the UK on residential roofs and here I’m talking under 100sqm the waterbased adhesive with stainless poly pins and the clamp edge trim system is approved by Carlisle. On the big stuff commercial and 100sqm plus we specify 100% solvent based adhesives and RUSS perimeter securement. Just picking up on the previous guys comments the approved timber deck over here is OSB3 oriented strand board. Personally I would bond to tissue faced insulation with contact but in some cases application will be on to a cold deck roof design. As I say Dusty thanks for your comments it’s great to hear from someone fitting this to big roofs 👍🏻

Hi E Dar both are fine for installing EPDM. Just avoid pre-sealed or bitumen painted boards.

Can the membrane be use on a 10 degree slightly pitched roof, thanks
@aboston5740 Жыл бұрын
yes. epdm is often used on commercial and residential high rises with a 0 degree roof. so 10 degree is not an issue
