Thank you Ed. You know that most of the research was from obituaries of Men that had been in the Korean war and had returned and were employed by J&S . It was a casting company, I am sure that they were taken over buy another casting Co. Have a great day.

Sweet. Anything free that works is not a bad deal. I've heard of people taking a front end loader of another tractor and putting it on the post hole digger to put some pressure on it . Great work.

We can dig nice in our area, we don't have extremely hard soil. it was definitely the auger. I can put a auger in out front end loader but dont have one. a converted skid steer auger will work, I already have the hydraulic hose connection in place for the hay grappler. have a blessed day Ryan!!

My grandpa had the same auger, we used it for many, many years. I'm 42 and I can remember it being on the farm all of my life. Its not the heaviest made but it was a great little auger until I had to replace it just a few years ago when the gearbox finally locked up. I cant remember ever changing the gear oil in it just added a little here & there. It lasted a long time with little to no maintenance, so if you take care of it, it should last a very long time.

Mike, I'm over 60 and can remember we had one as well, but like a lot of the implement that are worn or can't be repaired, we would scrap or repurpose them. When I pulled the plug it was completely empty of gear oil. I did notice some leaks around the auger seal, so I will be checking it frequently. Thanks for the encouraging words. My brother has two but I don't like to borrow stuff and prefer having our own. Like they say in an expensive store you break it you buy it. Have a great evening Mike and thanks for commenting. Blessing.

It has been my experience equipment of that age was built to last. Unfortunately now it's built to wear out so they can sell more. Thank you Louie.

You are correct Bryce, I am lucky that it has a 2" shaft and it has been the norm for Augers. Tractor supply has the same bolt pattern and will fit it. Blessing Bryce have a great evening!!

I’m amazed of the grease fittings, even duck grease being that old

None of the bolts were seized or hard to remove, so I am assuming that it had been keeped and somewhat maintained. When I removed the plug is was bone dry did not have a any smoke or burnt-out smell. Did see that the auger has a small leak in the seal. Let's hope the auger bit from Tractor Supply works. It had been sitting for 10 or more years at the proportie when I got blade. And who knows how long it had not been used before that. all zerks were good. Have a great evening!!

Hi Louie, I have homemade mounts for my post hole digger. I have it mounted to one of my 520 John Deere tractors. When I go to mount it, I get a loader tractor and suspend it with a chain. That way I can hook it up myself and the neighbors aren’t having to hide the women and children from hearing all the cussing and screaming 🤣

I had to wait a while trying to catch my breathing. I had seen a metal post holding the auger in place that would make it easy to backup and hook it up. I am sure the neighbors cow were running away from where I was at, thinking I was going to shoot them. To funny, have a great evening Gary.

I was going to say hang some weights from it but if the bit is that bad, I guess it’s time to retire. I bet there is someone out there needing that gear box but how do you find them. 😂 Take care and have a blessed rest of the weekend Louie.
