I just cannot describe in words how frustrated I was because of all the other arch forums and videos... sure, some stuff definitely changed in this time period of 6 years, it is not much. Thank you so much for making life easier for me. Really. helped me a lot. But, you should make an updated video for this. Again, thank you.

Best arch install video i have seen. For x64 computers you may need to add --force to the grub-install command. ( It should look like: grub-install --force /dev/sda )

There are a lot of comments below about the cfdisk and partitioning part of the video. I am using the latest version (2016.06.01-dual) and have tried the cfdisk tool. While it has changed a little from the layout here the confusion is arising as his disk already had a partition table (dos type) as there were already two partitions on it when he logged into it. If the disk is completely blank with no partition table at all (a partition table is needed for any partition type) the first screen asks for the label which is the partition type. He uses dos so stick with that. Gpt is required for uefi booting (the new type of booting on most modern machines - desktop or laptop). In fact, manufacturers are gradually not supporting legacy (bios type) booting any longer on their most recent machines (differs I'm sure from manufacturer to manufacturer). For a uefi booting machine it is different and an efi partition is required as well (512M normally and the type EFI is selected for it) formatted to FAT32. For gpt with bios booting the type and bootable options are selectable with 't' or 'b' - just click on help to see the options. Dos type partition has these available on the screen as per the video above. Also Grub for efi needs to be selected as the grub he selects here won't work on an uefi booting machine. I think virtualbox supports uefi booting so play around with it to see the difference and get it all working. I have found VM's invaluable for learning this low-level booting multi-boot stuff as you can make and break machines to your heart's content.

You should make a updated version of this video as this no longer works because cfdisk has been updated. I'm stuck on installing GRUB, but it fails because I apparently have no boot flag (Because you can't set one on GPT).

Thank you so much for this video! I had a problem installing grub, so I’ll leave the solution here for anyone who has the same problem. If you are getting an error saying “This gpt partition label contains no bios boot partition,” use cfdisk to make a 200 megabyte partition and make the type BIOS boot. If you need free space, make the main partition .2 Gb smaller. Now installing grub should work.

KZbin (Google) should add a "Love" button. Thanks a ton! My last Arch attempt left me feeling quite vulnerable and intimidated...so I put it off for a few years. Now, I have the time to play with it and I come across this video first. Very encouraging. I am actually installing it now. I'm sure I may have a few more issues because I'm using an actual machine and the machine is quite a few years old, but dispelling the unneeded confusion goes a very long way...

at 6.23 minutes for wifi connections, menu-wifi no longer exists on new boot iso's. You will need to use iwctl here: wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Iwd#iwctl what was also missing from devel is mkinitcpio that is no longer on the base install. I installed with pacman pacman -S mkinitcpio, then another problem was to pacman -S linux and linux-firmware for mkinitcpio to actually use the linux img

I don't understand why anyone would want to create a seperate home partition and a seperate root partition. All that does is limit the size of the programs you can install, and it also overcomplicates things to a maximum degree. Thanks for this tutorial; it gave me a visual representation of what to do before I do it.

I recently set up Arch Linux to dual boot with Debian 8.1 "Jessie" on my new laptop. Here's how I went about that: (note that I installed Debian first to be my primary operating system) 1) When setting up Debian's partitions, I had left 100GB free space for a possible future dual boot, which of course turned out to be the aforementioned Arch Linux. I also already created a swap partition for Debian, and the same swap partition can be used for both operating systems, so I didn't need to make another one when setting up Arch. 2) I already had 3 primary partitions for Debian, and I'm limited to either 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary and 1 extended, so I created an extended partition with the 100GB free space I had left, and then created logical partitions for root and home. (yes I'm one of those goofballs who uses a separate home partition, so I mounted root into /mnt, then went into the /mnt directory and created a home directory [# mkdir -p home] to mount the home partition into) Don't worry, Linux will boot from a logical partition. (it isn't Windows :P) 3) After the initial Arch install finished and I set up some other things (root password, locale, timezone, etc) I didn't need to install the GRUB bootloader because it was already installed when I set up Debian. However I did need to boot into Debian after I was finished and update GRUB so that Arch would show up on its list. Other than that I pretty much did what this tutorial said, or more accurately I followed the official ArchWiki documentation =)

Things i had to do for my internet connection: -use an ethernet cable -create a netctl profile and enable, start it -use ip link to find my interface for my profile -disable ipv6 -went to grub file edited GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" the brackets and then generated a new file for grub and it worked.I could use pacman. -i also had to delete a /var/lib/pacman/db.lc file because i had issues starting pacman. You can google everything. That's what i did +i had experience with my previous struggles of installing arch. wiki has information aboug disabling ipv6 editing the grub file and info about an ethernet profile.

Overall, I'm *for* the way you edited the sound - it keeps the pace snappy, and every line feels worthwhile. This is a great, great tutorial (so far - I'm not done yet, but I'm not anticipating any problems at this point). There may have been a moment or two where you could have left another 1/4 second or so in there without killing the flow. But this is a very minor quibble.

David, the other thing mentioned by one or more below is this setup does not turn on the internet connection. A final step would have been to have that turned on at boot up. The dhcp service needs to be started to get it to work. Using the ip link command the network card is down on boot up and has to be started. Not sure of the right way to do it but putting the command in the rc.local file should do it. If others know of a better way to do it please let me know.

Figured it out: - There will be no internet cxn with the above installation - assuming the wired cxn is used thn copy the ethernet-dhcp file in /etc/netctl/examples to the netctl folder - change the interface to the name of the network device (enp0s3 something like that) and save it as my-ethernet-dhcp - check it works with "netctl start my-ethernet-dhcp" - if ok then enable it with "netctl enable my-ethernet-dhcp" and it will be on at each subsequent boot up - how to set up wifi or auto shifting between wired and wifi is described on the Arch wiki

Fixes to common problems: you must do "pacman -Syy" then "pacman -S archlinux-keyring" before installing base and base-devel with pacstrap. Also after installing grub (10:34 in the video), make sure to do "pacman -S install wpa_supplicant dialog", or else you won't have wifi when booting into your system. If you have no internet upon booting up your system, first check "wifi-menu", or if you use ethernet run "dhcpcd" to start it uo. After your first boot-up, update pacman with "pacman -Syy" then install a desktop environment (Ex. lxde, plasma, mate, cinnamon, etc.) To start that environment, run "sddm" if you installed plasma, or "lxdm" if you installed anything else. Remember this tutorial is bios only so UEFI systems (a.k.a. new Windows computers) will need to do different procedures. Always leave some free space in partitioning for error or for if grub needs it, and when in doubt, use ethernet cables. Make sure to check comments for common fixes as well.

Personal recommendation: my pacstrap was going to take 10 hours, since the first server was giving me 7kb/s. Run "rankmirrors -v /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" to get find out how quick each mirror is, and then use "nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist" to edit the mirror list. Cut and paste quick mirrors to the top of that list, so that pacstrap chooses them instead.

Aren't there still problems with cfdisk for ssds? I've seen some issues with alignment, I was wondering if anybody has any experience with these issues or if it's just a matter of using a base 16 multiple. Swap isn't like ram, swap is for paging and your swap needs are dependant on your usage and swap exists on your drive. I've heard people call it a bunch of different names, but in general it's virtual memory that exists on a drive and is much slower than ram. Determine your need based on how much memory your applications will need and how much ram you have. For example, one setup I have for scientific computing uses 32GB of swap, but for most purposes 2GB is ample.

Very helpful and informative video. Everything went by the book and installed just fine. Here's the problem though. I'm on a wired connection to my router and during the installation process, files are downloaded as required, but after reboot, I do not have an internet connection. I can get a connection by typing dhcpcd, but I want Arch to have network connection automatically after boot. How do I go about this?

if you used a drive previously used on freebsd, you might have trouble install grub bootloader. (it complains about the ufs thing) just use the --force flag and that should work just fine. or you can just perform a low level format of the drive to get rid the error.

For anybody struggling with the keyboard (if it is not an english keyboard) try the following: 1. Use localectl list-keymaps and find your keymap. Remember the code because you will need later. When you're done, click Ctrl+c to get out. 2. Then, use loadkeys code_you_found. Done.

'pacstrap /mnt base base-devel' didn't work for me initially, I had to nano /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and remove the # from in front of one of the mirrors... For some reason unknown to me they were ALL commented out. Use the Canada mirror as the US mirror is bugged. 'pacman -S grub-bios' doesn't work, I had to exit arch-chroot and use 'pacstrap /mnt grub-bios' then go back into arch-chroot to install with 'grub-install /dev/sda'

Did Not Work after grub installed. Couldn’t find directory. Please update. This at least got me started, where the Arch install.txt file seems to jump around. Maybe I’ll just use Antergos, or (gasp) Debian.

Nice tutorial, thanks. You might want to add that dialog, iw and wpa_supplicant should be installed while installing the OS, otherwise you cannot install the desktop environment without an Internet connection. Another thing is, the package xorg-server-utils is removed from the repo, so all of the packages that it installs should be installed separately.

RedExplosives you mean I should type "cfdisk" without any parameters? That's what I did, and it opens up the progeam, however it is a newer version (2.25 I believe) than the one in this video and it's missing the flags column. According to the help page I should be able to make something bootable by pressing "b", however when i do nothing happens.

Go to the help menu by hovering over [Help] or something like that. Then notice all the flags have been moved to there. Also to make something swap, just use the new [Type] menu to select Linux swap

you should be able to have virtualbox use the 64bit mode if you enable VT-x/AMD-v and nested Paging. Well thats only if you have a cpu that supports it but maybe you happen to have a really old cpu that dont or have it turned off in the bios/uefi.
