If you're getting an error with "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" saying "grub.cfg.new: No such file or directory" then it's not reading that there's a grub folder in the boot directory. Enter the command: mkdir /boot/grub Then try running the grub-mkconfig command again

Good tutorial! I was extremely worried about getting this working, as I am used to legacy systems and I had LUKS running on LVM on my old system. It used syslinux instead of grub, so I went back and forth in my mind about which way to go. It wasn't clear that syslinux can then boot the Windows loader, however, so I followed your tutorial and google'd the grub entries. It worked like a champ! That's how you know it is a good tutorial!

Hi Ben, You can still follow the video, but you will need to perform all filesystem operations on the other disk. Look at the output of: fdisk -l and you'll notice two disks. If I had to guess, one will be /dev/sda and other will be /dev/sdb. You can create the partitions on /dev/sdb. But make sure that you mount the already existing EFI partition from /dev/sda on /boot/efi

Hi Nehal, NEED HELP! I was following your video and was trying to install Arch Linux but unfortunately didn't pay attention to the "+2GB" while creating swap. So I aborted the process and tried to load windows 7. I though that - from windows, I would be able to delete the swap partition and try again, fresh. But windows didn't load saying "No active partition". I tried the ubuntu live (pendrive boot) in trial mode; and using gdisk, tried to convert GPT into MBR. But again getting the same error. "No active partition". I also tried some lilo installation and get back to MBR to detect the boot. The windows 7 is important for me since I have a few important data files in C drive. I have taken backup of most of the data but forgot to backup my CadSoft Eagle files. What should I do to get back to windows again? I am infatuated by your video and want to try Arch again. But, I don't want to lose windows either. I am an embedded developer and want windows for some specific softwares, for which linux support is not available. I would recommend creating a separate partition for /home. I just didn't do it in the video because I wanted to show the minimal steps. There are multiple ways for writing fstab. One can have mapping made up of UUIDs or Labels, or Partitons directly. The -U option specifies UUIDs.

Arek Krężel If you want to dual boot with Windows, first find out if your Windows is installed in UEFI mode or Legacy Mode. If it is UEFI, then install Arch Linux in UEFI mode. If it Windows is installed in Legacy Mode, then install ArchLinux in Legacy mode. Right now, it looks as if you have booted ArchLinux installation medium in UEFI mode, so it is trying to install ArchLinux in UEFI mode. Hence it is asking for the EFI partition. If you want to install ArchLinux in Legacy mode, then turn off UEFI in your BIOS settings and then boot the installation media.

Nehal J Wani I tried to install refind instead of grub or do I need both? anyway its not working for either of them. I can't select another Boot Manager. Windows always starts, can't even select the linux one in the Boot Menu Any idea why neither refind nor grub are showing up no matter how I install them? I tried moving the refind_x64.efi to bootx64.efi but that didnt work either

hello, when I try to generate the efi partition, it seems as if it can't be created. I use the # mkdir -p /mnt/boot/efi command, but when I do the check gdisk -l /dev/sda has been created :/

AFTER installing Arch Linux and setting up the loader in the ESP (FAT32 EFI partition), the steps are:(i) Get into BIOS (by pressing F2 when computer boots)(ii) Set Supervisor password(iii) Ensure Secure Boot is on(iv) Go to "Select an UEFI file as trusted for execution" and choose: EFI->Arch->grubx64.efi(v) Turn off Secure Boot(vi) In section 'Main', select F12 Boot Menu and change it to 'Enabled'(vii) (Optionally) clear Supervisor password(viii) Save BIOS settings and restart(viii) Press F12 on boot and now you can choose Arch.

Have I got this right (if installing windows/arch on the same disk)? - Install windows in UEFI mode. - Boot Arch, leave partitions that are there, but create new ones for Arch. - Install grub to same disk as Windows (ie. /dev/sda) - Install os-prober and run grub-mkconfig again and everything will be good to go? (skipped the normal/basic stuff)

Please read the video description. I have added special instructions for ACER laptops. I'll copy paste them here: If you have an ACER laptop, please perform the following extra steps: AFTER installing Arch Linux and setting up the loader in the FAT32 EFI partition, the steps are: 1. Get into BIOS - by pressing F2 when computer boots 2. Set Supervisor password 3. Ensure Secure Boot is on 4. Go to "Select an UEFI file as trusted for execution" and choose: EFI - arch - grubx64.efi 5. Turn off Secure Boot 6. In section 'Main', select F12 Boot Menu and change it to 'Enabled' 7. -Optionally, clear Supervisor password 8. Save BIOS settings and restart 9. Press F12 on boot and now you can choose Arch.
@souravmazumdar55836 жыл бұрын
I have followed your additional steps but still the problem persists. I solved this by deleting the arch directory in the EFI folder. After this I was able to go into my BIOS Then I again reinstalled arch and am successfully running both arch and windows but after installing arch ,I don't my BIOS this time as well.

+Jared Hess Are you sure you need to build a kernel module? Before typing anything, when you boot the Arch Linux installation media, are you able to get an IP on your ethernet adapter (if you are using DHCP)? Are you able to ping any public IP address? I mean to ask, if 'ip addr' shows that your network interface exists, then probably kernel module is not the issue here.

I am unable to ping public addresses and I do not have an ip on the router. When I do the ip config command, I only get the first line of text.
