After building many cabinets, strongly recommend you use a self centering drill bit for drilling and installing screws in the hinge. No way you will get all screws centered perfectly and straight without.
@hansangb11 ай бұрын
While I agree vix bit is a good idea, I think being "mostly centered" works for these hinges because they can be adjusted in all three axis after being installed. But for anyone installing traditional slide mounts, vix bit is absolutely mandatory. That little "schooch" as you tighten the screw is all you need to see to know that you should have used a self centering bit. LOL

Good video. Installing many cabinet doors (using that Rockler hole jig) on built in shelves, it is a great product. With multiple doors, also made a jig with overlay distance down from top of shelves. The jig was worth the effort, hold flush then screw. Like you said, the job was easier than first thought. I'm installing very similar hinges, only difference being mine is 1/2" overlay, and this is the best video I found for my situation. No one explained the actual hanging of the door as well as you, so thumbs up for that! I went with the Kreg jig, though. The Rockler is more versatile and durable, and will probably last a lot longer for someone who does this sort of thing often. But the Kreg is half the price and actually has positions for the door screws as well, taking more of my lack of woodworking skills out of the equation.
@bentswoodworking6 жыл бұрын
HavokStrifeX thank you! I am glad you found it useful. I may actually look into that Kreg one. I literally just melted some of the plastic on the rockler using a new drill I got. 🤣
@HawksGoalie335 жыл бұрын
I'm in/was in the same boat. I was looking at the Rockler jig ($70) when I saw the kreg one ($30). The Rockler doesn't include the bit which kreg does but kreg uses a proprietary bit by the sounds of it vs Rockler with a standard 3/8" shank (long) bit. Though, with the comment of melting the Rockler, it kinda throws that minor justification out of the window.

I'm a bit confused about the differences with the "overlay" of these hinges. I bought "full overlay" hinges. In that case, how do I measure the door size (I need to make the doors still!) for a frameless/faceless cabinet style?
@bentswoodworking5 жыл бұрын
Tiktaalik it would depend on a few things but the below might be helpful. A full overlay is a cabinet door that covers the cabinet’s entire face frame. This ensures minimal gaps so that only a very small portion of the cabinet’s storage area is viewable. A full overlay is a cabinet door that conceals the opening to the storage area. This type of door or drawer front leaves very little gaps between the adjacent openings so that only a small portion of the cabinet box is visible between units. A full overlay fully rests on the cabinet opening when it is closed. A full overlay does not interfere with the interior space of the cabinet, which is not the case when using a half overlay or a full-inset door. Full overlays can be used on both frameless cabinets and cabinets that have a face frame. Cabinets which use a full overlay design are common with five piece doors, but flat wood or paneled coverings are also available.

I need HELP!!!! I just painted my bathroom, but had to remove the medicine cabinet door to paint around it. In trying to put it back on we realized the screw that looks like it should screw into the wood does not. The screw on each end of the door just hung in there loosely. So I’m having a problem to get it back on. There are two holes with a slot. One slot going up from the screw and one going down. It seems that’s where there would be an adjustment? There is a little bent nub that seems to go into either the hole or the slot and then using the adjustment to tighten it to the frame to hold the door on. The problem is it seems to work in the slot, but just a little too small for the hole. Any ideas?

How do you determine the width you use for your face frames? And are these considered full overlay?
@bentswoodworking6 жыл бұрын
Mike K the width I will typically use ranges from 2.5” to 3.5”. It really just depends on the project. As a rule of thumb, I’ll base it on how large the project is going to be. As for overlay, that is referring to how much of the door will overlap the face frame. I will use 3/4” overlay hinges is most cases.
@mikek5686 жыл бұрын

Hello, great video! My contractor converted my kitchen cabinets from exposed hinges to concealed, soft close hinges. When i did the walkthrough yesterday, I noticed a couple of things. One, the hinges show on the outer edge of the doors! Two, they don't really soft close correctly. I asked the contractor if he set the hinges too close to the edge, causing them to show, and he said no, that it he had moved them further from the edge then there would be a big gap between both doors at the opening. What???? Your thoughts?
@bentswoodworking5 жыл бұрын
Well it could be a few things. Soft clothes European-style hinges are developed and sold based off of overlay of the doors. So depending on how much overlay there currently was with the exposed hinges, it could’ve caused this issue. It’s kind of hard to explain. Basically replacing the hinges that the doors were originally made for with hinges that may not work, which appears to be the case in this scenario will always cause issues. I don’t think it’s normal that you can see part of the hinges but it’s probably based on the original size door.

@@bentswoodworking Thanks...do you think if he had used different concealed hinges that it would have worked? He bored the hole so that about 1/8-1/4" of the edge of the round part of the hinge is sticking out. I told him that he shouldn't have bored the hole so close to the edge; and he told me that if he'd done that then the doors would have a gap in the center. that is, the dishes sitting in the cabinet would show! I'm having trouble believing that there's nothing he could have done differently to make it work.

I've managed to rip the door off of my wardrobe. They are overlay hinges. The screw holes have been ripped out in the inside of the wardrobe. Can I just use a hinge repair plate or do I need to fill in the old holes and re-screw them? (The hinges are attached to the door, and aren't damaged) Cheers :)

You could use the plate. They also make kits that you basically drill the striped holes, insert a dowel, then screw back into the dowel

I replaced 18 interior doors and used JB wood filler to fill all old hinge holes, pleased with hardness to drill new holes. You cut off a slice then knead well. Easy to push in holes, clean any excess with putty knife immediately. PS. The Rockler hinge hole jig shown is great.
