Thanks Anthony. Great video! My contractor stopped coming before the doors were put on my built-ins so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I am a fairly decent DIY type but never installed concealed hinges. I was nervous that I would ruin the cabinet doors. With your guidance, I completed the project and they turned out great. I did take time to buy a 3/4" plywood blank for a test run which worked well and gave me confidence to finish the project. Keep up the great how-to videos.

When you installed the door on the faceframe, you said "Perfect!", but you didn't discuss the 1/4" gap between the door and the faceframe. I don't call that perfect. These hinges are crap. Does everyone just accept the inadequate fitment?

I liked your step by step instructions in the installation of these hinges. A little constructive criticisms, your should have turned the clamps over, when clamping the jig in place, to keep from denting the face on the front of the door. Or use a scrap of plywood to minimize the impact. All-in-all a good video.

Anthony, this video gave some great info for installing the hinges, but can you make a video explaining the hinge differences and what and when to use them?? For instance, the sizes of the hinges, such as 1/2", 3/4", etc....I go to Lowes or Home Depot and there are like 10 different hinges that look the same and I am lost, hahaha
@AnthonyScolaro13 жыл бұрын
I’m glad the videos are helping, the size of the hinge 1/2”, 3/4” overlay etc... all depends on what size overlay you want the doors to be or what existing doors you have on cabinets. If you have a cabinet with an opening of say 15 inches from the inside of the face frame and the door measures 16 inches from side to side, then you have a 1/2” overlay. So you’d buy 1/2” overlay hinges. The overlay measurement refers to the amount the door overlays the opening of the face frame all around. 1/2” means the door is 1/2” bigger than the opening on all sides and top and bottom. I hope this helps. I’ll probably do a video on hinges down the road.

Now check to see if your hinge is square. Unfortunately its a well reported paradox that the Kreg jig is out of alignment for the two screws so always use your square and a self centering drill bit to put those pilot holes in. The 35mm hole positioning works very well indeed, it's just those screws.

@AnthonyScolaro14 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have or can’t find instructions online for those hinges, I’d start with the dial settings on 4. Then test it on scrap the same thickness as your doors. Mount the scrap with the hinge to the cabinet carcass and check your reveal. If it’s not where it should be, get another scrap and change the dial setting plus or minus one depending on if you need it to move in or outward.

I have a question I am trying to do doors for my aquarium cabinet I had the hinges that are soft close and the kreg jig the manufacturer says to install the hinge from the outside edge of the wood to the center of the hinge 13/16 but I do not see this on The jig because 13/16 is 20 mm so how do I set the jig up to work also my hinges are 1 1/4 overlay how do I know if the hinge will rub against the cabinet face?
@AnthonyScolaro13 жыл бұрын
13/16” is almost 21mm, it’s actually 20.65mm to be exact, but that doesn’t matter, you should get a scrap piece of stock and cut it to the exact size of the stile of the existing door where the hinge will sit and make a mark at 13/16 from the edge as the manufacturer recommends. Then using the jig with the forstner bit installed, bring the kreg jig up to the edge and adjust the dials on the jig until the point of the forstner bit is dead center on the 13/16 mark. Then on the scrap, drill that 35mm hole and install the hinge and check your fit. Also, concealed hinges have adjustment screws to move them up, down and forward or backward to prevent rubbing on the cabinet.

Nice video. I wish you would have shown how you determine where you install the hinges/door on the cabinet. Also, do you buy your wood from the store or do you buy it and then mill it? I’m making shaker doors and drawer faces for my kitchen and I bought the poplar from Home Depot and the wood is nothing but a problem with slight twists and bows, etc.
@AnthonyScolaro15 жыл бұрын
Greg D I buy it rough from a hardwood dealer then mill it. You’ll never get straight and true boards from a big box store. They don’t worry about moisture content or proper drying and they just stick the boards one on top of the other in a rack. That’s why they always twist, bow and cup.

@AnthonyScolaro14 жыл бұрын
DUNAiden 985 you are referring to what’s called “inset doors”. inset doors can use these types of hinges but you have to make sure the package says “inset”. The hinge package for the doors I made say “overlay” because they overlay the face frames.

I am replacing my old hinges with soft close. I’ve patched holes from old hinges. Do I need to change where I install new hinges? I’ve read about wood fillers, epoxy and putty, they all say you can drill them but they are not strong enough to hold cabinet doors. My old hinges were placed 3” from top and bottom, should I change measurement when installing new hinges so I’m not drilling into wood filler or epoxy?
