You're right to hard wire to the router, powerlines and wifi extenders will always drop out at some point as you said, and anyone arguing that cat6 is required for CCTV is struggling with simple maths. Uplinks from switches yes, but from a single camera to the NVR with even a 4k camera will only need around 5mbps with H265, including the sub stream. The POE ports are usually 10/100 anyway.

Maybe, but they'd probably need to prove that it caused whatever problem they're fixing. That being said the hole cut seemed a lot bigger than necessary to me. I probably would've used a holesaw just big enough to get a few fingers/pliers in and grab the rod. But each to their own. You could also probably glue the piece of wood back in after the job once a more suitable sized hole for the cable had been made.

Certainly don't need cat 6 or more for these distances. But the outdoor rating will certainly help the lifespan and is tougher than normal 5e. A single 1080p analogue camera uses approximately 150-200kbps, so that's about a fifth of 1Mbps ! Good clear vid. Thanks

Personally, I would have used cat6, where I buy it from the price difference is very negligible, I do need cat6 for other jobs, so makes seance to just have the one. Also, future proofing, who knows what cameras we will have in 10-20 years time? 8k and even 16k exist commercially, overkill for home just now, but in the future? What are you saving 50p on cable for the whole job? I sometimes have cat7, price difference is huge. Wouldn't use that here.

Nice work. With the hard drive in the loft does mean that it’s difficult to have monitor showing live cctv in a convenient place. Wireless hdmi transmitter with usb for the mouse is how you do it. About £180 for the transmitter and receiver from Amazon. They work well for cctv. Frame rates can skip sometimes, that’s why you see bad reviews for them on Amazon, they don’t work well for live sky sports you see.

I don't understand why you couldn't run the router cabling in the cavity as well as the camera cables? All going to the same place so makes no sense to me why you changed your method... Otherwise looks a fab job 👌
@smitcher4 ай бұрын
probably because the cameras are at 1st floor level and the router is at ground. To drill upwards at same angle would require him to be standing in a 3 foot deep hole and to rod up 2 storeys is more than twice as difficult. Of course you could do it 1 floor at a time, drilling up and down at the same 1st floor mortar joint but it's 100x more difficult to fish the wire towards a hole than towards a huge opening in the loft...
@SBBUK4 ай бұрын
It would've been difficult to get that cable inside as it's up 2 stories. You can't go up the cavity as there will be trays etc in the way (and personally i'm not convinced about cables in the cavity full stop, to be honest - low voltage isn't technically covered under electrical regs but I would still personally comply with them). So in order to do so you'd need to go on the inside of the wall behind the plasterboard. Not impossible but probably a lot of "making good" that they didn't want to get involved with. You'd have to cut several access holes into the plasterboard inside the property, then make it through the floor (probably requiring lifting of the carpet and an access hole in the floor), then another set of holes on the second floor wall.

I would avoid putting equipment like DVRs in the loft if possible. The temperature up there can swing from ~0C to over 40C over the course of a day, and this constant cycle of temperature change could shorten the life of electronic equipment like hard drives. Condensation can also form in loft spaces when it's cold, which can also impact the life of electronics. A DVR would be much happier in the living space. Edit: I don't know that specific device, but it looks like you blocked the air vent holes by screwing it to the timber.

If it works for you then great but, to be honest, there aren't many installers who would want to install and guarantee a battery-powered wireless system for a client. With the above system, Pete can walk away and pretty much guarantee no callbacks, however there are just too many things to go wrong with wireless and battery-dependent devices in terms of local interference, signal jammers, WiFi signal strength and attenuation in any given property, and the expectation for the customer to have to go up a ladder every six months to change batteries.

In the highly unlikely scenario that CCTV cameras at some point in the future require greater that 1Gbps, it'll be so far away that we'll all be dead and buried and the house will have been demolished. More costly, larger holes, more difficult to pull, greater radiusing required at bends; I'm all for future proofing where appropriate, but there just aren't any upsides to using CAT6 or any higher standards.
