How to Install Dabs Radio on Mini Cooper, One, S, R50, R53 using Original Aerial

Guide on how to install Dabs radio on a Mini Cooper R50. This guide also shows you how to fit without the need for an extra aerial. So no window aerial or under the dashboard installation.
The install includes a step by step guide of everything in up to 4k video.

Thanks very much for that. I notice the sound quality on my wife's original FM mini isn't fantastic. I had a new DAB Pioneer double din fitted to my ancient Saab and the sound improvement was spectacular with same speakers..... I wonder if would get the same effect with an after fitted unit in the Mini.

Great question. Without we noticed an improvement in the sound with the same speakers. Just sharper all round.

I was told by a local radio geek guy that these kits won't work with boosted aerial fitted to R50 Minis - I bought a kit previously and the guy demonstrated that DAB only worked for a fraction of a second before going silent - but FM works really well as does everything else. Are there different kits for boosted aerials?

Hey sentimental, I hope all is good with you. I haven't seen any kits designed for boosted aerials sadly. I assume the cause for it to cut out, is the ability of the cable to carry the boosted signal strength? Did you friend give you a cause, I would be interested to know.

Didn't work in my 2005 Mini One. I have the same Pioneer and a similar splitter, but although I get awesome FM, I'm getting no signal for DAB. I'm going to try the install again after watching this as I had assumed the Mini had some form of inbuilt aerial amplification.

Blowfishes KZbin Hi there, sorry to hear you are having issues. Important you get all the bits in the video, as the splitter is simply the power, not dab support.(Halfords love to push the on screen aerial, but no need) The additional part is not too expensive and should work in a Mini One. Great stereo btw, sounds good on the standard speaker setup. Hope you get it sorted soon.

Hi there, I hope you are well. I have to admit I am not sure on this one. I assume there are a set of additional pins in the adapters which in theory would mean no need for more connectors. If you have a Harmon Kardon setup this would need an additional lead. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Most (non-Harmon) adaptors will allow you to use the volume and station/track up/down controls, but not really provide consistent controls for the phone. Mine will sometimes hang up the phone when pressed, but other times I have to ask the person I'm talking to to hang up. Most Bluetooth stereo head units which allow calls will have an auto answer function.

Hi mate. I have pretty much all the same parts as you. My antenna splitter is slightly different though. It has a blue wire attached to a silver box. It should work the same way no? I was thinking i'd try another aerial. My Mrs has a Mini also do i'll try the stubby aerial off hers and see if signal improves.

Hi Richie, I would look at getting the same splitter if possible, as I know some have functionality differences in how they manage signals, Frequencies etc. If you get it from Amazon, you could always send back if no success. (They are good for returns)

Does this work fine with the Harman-Kardon system in the Park Lane or have you made changes to the speakers etc...? I too have a Park Lane but I've seen you need a HK Enabler for an aftermarket stereo to work with the HK System.

Marky B Seeing the price of the HK enabler did put me off changing the stereo, but if this works spot on with the HK System and is the cheaper alternative, I think my Park Lane will be getting an upgrade. Thanks. 👍

Hi there, I hope you are well. The adapter should match and slot in perfectly via the block. Any remaining blocks would be for other variants of the device or car setup. If these are two lone wires then both suggest what they say (So power up on ignition and the neon colours on the stereo. Without pictures etc it is hard to tell, but this suggests you may have the wrong harness? Have you tried powering on yet?

Hi. Thank you for reply. I did some more searching and found the solution, exactly what you just said. I did connect ignition wire to cigarette lighter and it works fantastic. The rest of the harness was straight plug and play. Checked if it holds memory before put everything back in. It looks much better and I think sounds better than original one as well. Thank you :-)

Hi. I fitted a pioneer DEH-X7800 DAB radio with the recommended parts. All went well. Except no DAB signal. What might I have done wrong? Bluetooth works, CD works, FM works. But wanted DAB if possible. The Power to DAB ANT is set to ON which I assume is correct. Do you have any advice, thanks

Hi Daniel, I hope all is good with you. If you have the exact parts in the video that is a great start. Some alternative but similar parts out there from Amazon don't work, so not worth the risk. Two additional bits spring to mind, one replace the aerial installed on the Mini, you can pick up one for a few quid and this will have the ability to pick up dab (www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006G8OBZA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) The other is to make sure everything is screwed in tight, when putting back in can pull stuff out. Test it before fitting fully. I hope that gives you some direction.

Hi Nissa, hard to tell but I would check the following. 1) Make sure there are no lose wires/connections. 2) They have been put in the right way with the correct adapters heads being used (If the pin combo is wrong you will get issues) 3) Check you have a faulty item? 4) Have you got the exact match to the video? i.e you have used the same parts. (A few versions out there)

Hi mate. A bit later than expected but i installed my head unit today. Everything was fine and your video was a great help to me. The only problem i have encountered is that i am recieving little or no signal through the antenna using the splitter. I am recieving more signal and channels using a windscreen mounted aerial hidden under the dash. Any ideas?

Hey Richie, hope all is good with you. Assuming you have the exactly the same parts as in the video and nothing has come lose in there (It gets crowded) I would consider the outside aerial you have installed. Maybe worth going on Amazon (ONE COOPER ORIGINAL TYPE REPLACEMENT AERIAL ROOF MAST TOP ROD) and spend £3 quid on a replacement one just to rule out this part. @@craig7227 The MPU is similar on the listings and pictures can often be generic. Just give the seller(s) a shout and a link to this video as they can just look in the packets to check the pins. Worst case on ebay just use PayPal and return. You will know very early on if it is the wrong one.

@@HenryGeorge2018 - I found out how to disable it, but it's still a bit left. That left me to think the Wireless Entry System. Good news, then I wore my Wonder Bracelets. From there, I was able to relieve it and last a bit. Also, I learned how "EMF Sensitive" is and how it works. Sun-Bathing actually helps it too. YUP, OMG...
