Thanks for the tip, especially if we're working on our own homes. I'm about to change the existent aluminum siding, for wood siding, but I didn't know how to trim the corners. It will save me a lot for sure, only thing, I may want to use treated wood, so it may last longer. However, I know now I can do that with my own house. I bet it shouldn't be a problem with the inspectors anyway.
@GrantKeysProperties Жыл бұрын
Yes, treated lumber would be better! I paint every five years, so I don’t worry about it too much! Inspectors will have no problem with this. It is very quick, very easy and cheap. It also does it’s job to keep the water out. Thanks for checking in. I know you can do it!👌👍

@@GrantKeysProperties Alright, I think it would be no issue changing the corner every 5 years, being so cheap, besides, it looks so simple to do it. Thanks again bro

Really like this idea. I have Masonite siding and the tin endcaps always get damaged or loose, or just fall off. Will give this a try. Thanks

Thank you. Yes, I have done it several times and no complaints! I appreciate you reaching out!

What caulk to you use for the big gaps? What is the best way to smooth that out?
@GrantKeysProperties5 ай бұрын
You could use spray foam first off, then you could cut the spray foam with a little handheld hacksaw, and then put caulking over that, weatherproof exterior caulking for trim. If the siding goes behind the trim enough, you really wouldn’t have to put caulking, but it would be beneficial!

This is definitely the way I want to do it, but what is the advantage to doing it this way vs doing the corner trim first?
@GrantKeysProperties6 ай бұрын
In my honest opinion, if you put the trim on first, you are more likely to get water rot. If you do it the way I did it, the siding goes to the corner. All the way to the corner. Then you put a 1by4 over that on both sides and caulk it. Your corners will not rot. Your trim will rot first. Bad right? Wrong. The trim done this way, is a very simple fix. Opposed to taking the siding off. Great question thanks for checking in. Let me know if this helps!

Is it interior lumber used as corner trim? Or it's cedar (does not look like cedar). My concern is that it will rot soon. Correct me if I am wrong.
@GrantKeysProperties Жыл бұрын
It will rot if I do not paint it soon yes but much cheaper only couple bucks and primed-painted will last a long time. I’ve done it on every house for the last 12 years inside and outside and saved tons of money. I drive by my old properties to monitor the deteriorating conditions. I’m very happy. I like cheap but not crappy and I’m always willing to change how I do things if I have good reason. Hopefully this will help you and others wondering. There are many options for trim but you can use this method on other wood types and other materials as well. Depending on your budget-situation-ect. Thanks for checking in!

@@GrantKeysProperties Great answers. You also tracked the last 12 years deteriorating conditions, which is a proof, if folks do it right, a lot of materials will last than we expect. I totally agree, it's super budget friendly.

You are supposed to put the corners first , then leave a small gap between the siding and trim for caulk
@GrantKeysProperties Жыл бұрын
Your not supposed to do anything. There is several ways to trim a house. I’ve done it both ways But if you want to know what fails the test of time,it is the way your talking about. I’ve removed that trim done that way on every old house I’ve ever bought. So my dear. I didn’t do it that way. I did it this way. But I appreciate you letting everyone know that there are alternative routes. Just remember everyone that every situation is different and you do what way fits your needs. And have some fun doing it.
@21gonza21 Жыл бұрын
Well on the James hardie website there is installation instructions and you are probably better off following those instructions, many people don’t read anymore , there is a warning in the beginning.. “IMPORTANT: FAILURE TO FOLLOW JAMES HARDIE WRITTEN INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS AND COMPLY WITH APPLICABLE BUILDING CODES MAY VIOLATE LOCAL LAWS, AFFECT BUILDING ENVELOPE PERFORMANCE AND MAY AFFECT WARRANTY COVERAGE…”

You clearly don’t flip houses bro. You have to be creative. The rules do not apply and there is no structural problem with it as well as being cheap and easy and water will not get in thanks for sharing though my man!
