How to install GarlicOS in 2 MINUTES! | RG35XX Tutorial

Since making this guide one step has changed, there are now two files you need to download, they have the extension .001 and .002. Those together will extract the image file.

That probably means that the partition with the ROMs folder isn't giving assigned a drive letter on your computer. You can manually assign it a drive letter using this method:
Step 1. Right-click This PC and choose Manage - Disk Management.
Step 2. Find your USB drive in the list. Right-click the FAT32 volume on your SD card drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Step 3. In the window that opens, click Change.
Step 4. Assign a new drive letter to your USB drive and click OK.

- WRITTEN GUIDE -
WHAT YOU’LL NEED: You will need an RG35xx retro gaming handheld console. Obviously. You’ll need a microSD card of whatever size you want, I think a 32gb is fine but get a bigger one if you want lots of PS1 games. (link to the brand I suggest in the description below). You’ll also need to download the GarlicOS microSD card image from the link below. And you’ll need to download and install 3 programs - 7zip, MiniTool partition wizard and Balena etcher, which are also linked in the description below.
1. UNZIP YOUR IMAGE. After you install 7zip, right click on the archive microSD card image you downloaded and select extract to folder.
2. FLASH THE IMAGE. Next we need to flash the image. Plug in your microSD card into your computer and then Start up Balena Etcher, then click flash from file, and select the garlic.img from the microSD card image folder. Then click “select target” and put a checkbox beside the SD card drive. MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE RIGHT DRIVE OR YOU *WILL* LOSE DATA. You have been warned. Then click flash. It’ll only take a minute or two.
3. EXPAND PARTITIONS. Now we need to expand the partition. After the flash is done, open MiniTool Partition Wizard and find your SD card in the list of drives. In the area representing your SD card you’ll see several partitions listed, find the one that is formatted as FAT32, right click on it, then select “move/resize”. In here drag the slider all the way to the right to expand the partition to the full size of your SD card. Click okay in this screen, then click apply in the bottom left corner of the program.
4. COPY OVER YOUR STUFF. Now you should be able to see the SD card listed under this PC. You might see several drives listed, or get an unreadable drive error, you can just ignore those. Open your SD card drive and you’ll see 4 folders, BIOS, CFW, ROMS, and SAVES. Copy your rom collections into the rom folders, You can even copy these over from the original SD card that came with your RG35xx. And copy your bios files into the bios folder, which is actually optional I think, I didn’t bother with the bios files and I’ve had no problems.
That’s it! you’re freaking done!

I ignored everyone's advice and didn't copy the card that I got from Anbernic, and low and behold my card crashed and couldn't be read after about a month of gaming. I was trying to install garlicos on the original card which was 64gb, but it kept saying it was too full to work, so I tried expanding the partition and accidentally FORMATTED THE CARD!!! STUPIDLY i didnt save any of the roms, but after watching your video, at least now the damn thing boots! I can replace roms easily, so you saved me having to buy another device just to have a working one!

You'll need bios for Sega CD, Neogeo, turbografx-cd, and MAYBE for ps1 (most games boot fine in the default ps1 emulator, but a few rare ones will need the bios). General curiosity from side (WARNING!! Could be a very dumb question...) In these devices that basically run the operaring aystem from the sd card - at least as far as I understood - is there any modifications to the device itself by installing a different os? Is there any sw bits on the device itself (idk, a bootloader for instance, or a BIOS) that is modified by the operation? Or is it everything happening on the sd card? In other words, if as an example I flash garlic os on an SD card, another custom fw on another sd card, and I even keep the stock card as delivered from anbernic, can I just swap cards to swap the operating system the device will boot into?

There have so many great updates to Garlic OS recently (almost daily). Could you show how to update from an earlier garlic OS version to the newer version? Have two SD cards (one for firmware, the other for the roms).

1) if your current FW/OS serves your use case perfectly, dont upgrade. 2) dont update on daily/weekly basis. Check the changelog every 6-9 months if theres an update for your specific need/issue.

My rg35xx came with garlic os pre-installed. Now I see a lot of people saying that the SD card it comes with is garbage. Would it be possible to just copy and paste all the files from the stock SD card to a proper one? Because I am quite lost what I am supposed to do right now.

the 001 and 002 sdcard images are for the same drive or two separate drives? the latest release is a bit confusing.

Those are 2 parts of the same archive. Download both then use 7zip to extract 001, it'll automatically join them both and extract the image.

After the 1.0.2 update broke my single card install (no clue how, menu button stopped consistently working and couldn't bring up the retroarch menu or even the recent game selector, went straight to menu) I went ahead and set up a 16gb os only drive and a 2nd 128gb card for my roms and saves. So if I ever do get a mini in stock I can swap cards and reflash the os card as needed.

Another great concise video which helped a lot. One small correction. The PS1 games with high res turned on dont work so great. I tried Silent Hill and Driver and both gave problems with sound

Hi just wondering. I bought an rg35xx for a birthday present for my nephew. He's adamant that there is a difference between the nes version of donkey Kong and the arcade version.unfortunatly the arcade version on my device plays sideways. I have been looking around and apparently this can't be done. However I was thinking of adding the donkey Kong arcade rom from a Google search onto it. Would that work?

I have no idea if it's even possible. You'll need to be able to flash the image, and also expand the partition. I don't know of ChromeOS tools to do this. I'd highly recommend finding a PC to do this on. It only takes a few minutes and it'll save you a ton of time trying to find a way on ChromeOS.

At first, I had trouble getting everything to work with Garlic OS. I had to rename the PS1 folder to PS. I may have had to rename other folders as well. I discovered on the PS games that I had to move all the files out of the folders they were in. But then Garlic OS reported no games in the PS folder. I tried moving some jpg files to the images subfolder and removing some special characters from file names. Finally, Garlic OS was able to see all the PS games. All the RG35xx PS games in the 64gig distribution seem to work except for Suikoden II. For some games, I had to turn on "integer scaling" and get a copy of the PS1 BIOS for them to run at full speed. I couldn't find any BIOS files on the original RG35xx SD card. Not all arcade games I have tried work. I am trying to see what I can do about that. Is it possible to change emulators? I also had some problems with the CPS stuff. I want to run some Sinclair Spectrum games, but some of these games require keyboard input to start. Not sure what to do about that. I think that Garlic OS user interface could be a little more user-friendly. I would like to have sub-folders. If a game distribution has 4 files then it will list all 4 files in the menu, and only one of them will work. It would be nice to be able to zip up PS games, although I don't know if there is enough system memory for that to work. I would like to run PSP games, but the system might not be able to handle it. I saw that another OS was running PSP games with difficulty.

How hard is it to make exact copies of the SD cards on better quality ones? Sorry I'm new to all this and not very computer literate😁

You can use a program called Win32DiskImager to save an exact image of the SD card, and then you can write that image to another sd card in the future and have an exact copy.

Regarding the ROMs folders that come with the system, which Garlic OS ROMs folder does "VERTICAL" equate to when bringing the stock ROMs over to Garlic's folder system? I was thinking MAME, but not sure. Any advice/guidance?

Vertical is just a separate version of the mame emulator, for vertical only games. Garlic doesn't have a vertical version of mame (you'll have to adjust the retroarch settings yourself for that), so you can copy the 'vertical' games to the same folder as the rest of your arcade games.

YOu mean delete the save games and save states? Yes! Just need to find the saves on your SD card and erase them. I can't tell you exactly where they are because I don't have my RG35XX handy but if you search for the game name you should be able to find the save file (they'll be called .state, and the save will be something like .srm or another extension depending on the system, you can tell which one is the save because it'll have a very small file size).

Hi, thank you for this great video. I followed all of the steps and tried to run my RG35XX with Garlic OS. Whenever I longpress the power button in order to start the device, nothing happens. The system does not boot at all, the screen just stays black and the power led does not light up. Do you have an idea what is the problem here? I already tried different SD cards, performed new downloads and had dozens of tries.

You CAN use the one it comes with, but I highly recommend getting a new one because the one it comes with is pretty poor quality. Also then if you ever need rom files or to go back to the default setup you can just swap back to your original card.

Nope! The system isn't stored on the device itself, it's on the SD, so keep that original SD card untouched and get a new sd card for Garlic OS, and you can go back to the default sd card to get back to your out-of-box experience.

If you have a windows PC to setup the cards, it's a preference thing. If you're on a mac then the single-card setup is WAY more difficult, it's advisable to only use 2 cards there.

I got the RG35xx last week and installed Garlic OS which makes it much better. However, I wish that it was taller. With my big hands, it feels somewhat awkward to hold. I have concluded that handhelds, especially vertical ones, are hard to control accurately. I think that a horizontal portable game system would work much better.

Sorta. Either you have to copy & paste to your PC, then swap cards and copy them from your PC to the new card, or you have to have both cards connected at the same time.

followed the steps, put in the sd card back into my RG but now there are no games. i was doing this on the stock sd card that they give you. Did i lose all the data that came with it?

If you've flashed the image over the SD card, the data that was on there is gone. You'll need to add your own roms to the new image. If you don't have roms you'll need to download them. I suggest looking for "1g1r" sets on Google.

No, there's a separate version just for updating. You literally just drag and drop the files over top of the old ones.

Hey, i followed your steps and i think i got quiet far. garlic os is running on my device now - great! My problem is now, that I do not have any emulators on the device. Is there anything i can do ? The consoles folder on the device is empty.

Cool tutorial. I have a problem though.. it seems like the FAT32 got like some sort of deepfreeze. I everytime I add files it got deleted the moment I removed my USB on the computer. I can't delete or add files on my microSD. I don't think the microSD was set to 'Lock' since I use card reader direct for 'microSD' and not using adapter for this. any fix for this?

Sounds like a bad flash, or a corrupt SD card. Are you using the default SD card that came with the device? If so you should get yourself a cheap replacement.

Thanks for advice man! so after a day or so of re flashing the os countless times I figured out it was a battery issue. Initially I had used a fast charger. And that seemed to work but after 2 and half days and attempting to install a new os. The whole system was out of whack.turns out you cannot use any form of fast charging after letting the battery die completely on its own theb experimenting with the chargers I owned including the one that came with the device nothing was working but a Nintendo switch charger. The device booted garlic os no problem

Has anyone else noticed that the Stock OS has way better saturation than GarlicOS? I’ve tested it on 3 different machines, not sure if I just got a bad download of Garlic or need to update it or what, but it’s distracting how bad the screen looks compared to stock.

After installing garlic os on my 32gb SD card , if I format this SD card for using it again on my phone than the SD card work or it will be brick ?

I flashed garlic into the SD card and it created the various partitions, but when I put it on disk genius they couldn't be seen! I tried to format the SD card but it tells me it only has 10 MB of space. if I flash garlic again same problem. Balena detects that there are 128 GB free but does not create the various partitions for me. How can I format the SD card to bring it back to how it was originally and do it all over again?

I'm new to emulation and emulation handhelds but I'm planning to gift an RG35XX to my older friend who is not tech inclined. Is it safe to put GarlicOS on it or just leave the stock firmware?

The stock firmware isn't terrible. The only pretty big downside is the rom collection (see my review for more about that). Garlic OS is pretty easy to install, I'd go that route because it's much nicer, but if you're using the roms that come included on the device you'll get lots of Chinese/Japanese roms.

No, you'll need to create an 'image' of the stock os card (because there are other partitions you'll need). You can do that using Win32DiskImager. Then you can use that same program to flash the image you backed up to a new sd card. After applying the FAT32 partition expansion, and allowing it to complete, the SD card drive in “This PC” only has two folders: dtbs and modules There is no BIOS, CFW or Roms folders. I followed the steps, so surely you’ve seen this before. I went through the steps in your pinned comment, but the FAT32 partition Change Letter/Paths window does not offer the “Change” option, only available option is “Add” then OK/Cancel What do I do now?

I have the Garlic.img but when I install the SD card on my RG35XX the menu for the emulators are missing even though I already put roms and bios in it. Not quite sure what I did wrong.
