Success! I just flashed GrapheneOS to my Pixel 6 Pro and it was totally seamless! I just followed your video step by step and it was essentially perfect. NOTE: to anyone installing, when you're about to unlock the bootloader, SoB explains a few things...my phone screen timed out and shut off, so the website said "Error: no device detected" -- however, I just went ahead with the install with the video and everything was perfectly smooth. THANK YOU! Next, I'm going to set up sandboxed profiles like in your other video so I can still use some of the Play Store apps I purchased.

You're welcome! Very nice! Solid phone and solid OS for it! You should, best practice is to make sure the phone is fully updated prior to the install. I might be doing one on some software like that in the future, but probably not anytime soon. If you have F-Droid installed though, you can install Aurora directly from there :D

You definitely can. In my videos I regularly install grapheneOS without a SIM card in the phone and I've never had any issues. When you activate your phone it's usually tied to the SIM card or the IMEI of the phone if you don't have a SIM card, they don't care what OS you're running.

I tried to follow along on my ubuntu system - even though I installed the adb and sdk drivers, I continued to get this error message "Error: Failed to execute 'open' on 'USBDevice': Access denied." trying to unlock the bootloader. I ended up using another android device instead, which thankfully worked seamlessly. I am curious though, any idea why I may have gotten that error message? It's going to bug me haha! It depends. If an app uses Google Firebase service for notifications, then it won't work. Apps that implement local notifications, such as signal, will work. You can also install Sandboxed Google Play Services and all notifications will work.

Nothing that I know of. Depending on which model you have, you could try to repair the screen yourself. I've never done it on a pixel, but when I've done it on other phones, ifixit had great guides.

I've gotten to the flash release point and now it seems the progress is stuck on "restarting device" the progress bar (which is full) hasn't moved in about 60 minutes. I have good internet speeds. Any suggestions ? Maybe push "flash release" again ?? Possibly refresh the Graphene OS Web Installer Webpage ??

That's what I would do, try pressing flash release again and if that doesn't work refresh the webpage. It's possible your phone lost contact with the browser. You could also try swapping the cable

Every time it gets to a point where the "restarting device" load bar is full, if I take out the USB from the computer and then plug it back in, then it will continue on... Until I get to the Fastbootd point. Once it gets to this point and I reach a full "restarting device" load bar trying to take out the USB to plug it back in no longer works. I do have the option to scroll through the choices in blue and have played around with each option but can't seem to get one that will continue the flash release process. Any ideas ? I'm just using the standard Pixel 6 and I'm on a Mac

@@MrAye-bc4ms That is very odd. My only guesses with that are the cable or the browser. Are you using google chrome? I would try clearing all cache/history and make sure it's up to date. Also make sure the USB is plugged directly into the computer and not a USB hub or something along those lines.

What OS are you on? Easiest thing it to try another USB cable, usually that's one of the main causes for issues. Also, make sure you're using one of the support browsers.

The only thing you might notice is that some notifications for Apps don't work. Since most app developers use Google searches for notifications, those push notifications won't work. Everything else should work as expected.

Hi Stuart, the default app is decent, but to utilize the full functionality of the Pixel you need to use Google Camera. What I've done on my personal device is install gcam services provider, which simulates the Google Play Services needed to get the gcam app working without fully installing Google Play Services. Graphene uses the official Camera HALs and Stock Kernel Modules from Pixel - so when you install GCam (be it official APK or Mods) the results will be 100% the same as on Stock.

​@@sideofburritos source.android.com/devices/camera My above post was a bit misleading since the HAL's are not the drivers itself - instead they connect the Camera 2 API (the call of those are implemented within the Camera APK, the API itself within the ROM) to the drivers. If you check the official Graphene Git you'll find the Kernel receipts with the propitiary compiled vendor Kernel Modules mentioned and in another sub-repository they even ship a copy of them - these are the Drivers (BLOBs). Without those the Device would hardly work so unless they want to do complete reverse engineering or would be working with Open-Hardware then they're stuck with Vendor drivers. That is just one side of the medal - even if you use the Stock Kernel your ROM would need to implement the correct HAL in the ROM-Layer to speak correctly to the drivers. Long story short - since they stick / stay close to Stock and only target Pixel Devices they're fine (better put it like should be) and you won't have (should have) issues like on other devices that drive away and use older HALs or even only implement half of it. Mix that up with bugged implementation of Camera 2 API you have a big reason many devices work somewhat with GCAM Mods and some don't even work at all. In the end Google is pointing the way - here we have targeted development for their own devices exclusively so little room for driving off the way that would make sense (unless they go a 100% open source, which is nearly impossible)

You can install the official GCam App and Mods too and they're 100% the same - and make it forbid network access, for example to stop their shitty update-notifications. It's quite awesome. Since Graphene uses the official Camera HALs the results are 100% the same as on Stock.

Hmm, make sure you're using Chromium (not the one bundled with Ubuntu) as that one is broken, and you'll experience issues with the web install.

I've only ever looked into the Nitro phone. 5-10 years ago the process was much more involved, so I think phone that had it preinstalled would have made more sense back then. The installation process is so simple now that I don't see any reason to buy a phone preloaded with it. I think for a majority of people, purchasing a Pixel and installing it themselves is the best option.

Awesome install video. Worked perfectly, except when everything finished installing and screen popped up with icons, they were all black and white, while yours shows some color in the icons. Granted I did this install on a Pixel 5 vs your vid doing it on a 6. Hope I didn't mess anything up but How do I get some color?

Thanks! The colored icons are apps other than stocks apps. The GrapheneOS stock apps are monochrome which is why there's no colors.

@@sideofburritos Yeah I spoke with GrapheneOS on Twitter. they explained what you just said as well. BUT, you know what's weird?... I tested it out and downloaded Twitter app, and it was blue just as you said, BUT, I also downloaded Brave Browser app and the weird part is that it only shows up colored in the screen that shows where all your apps are located, not the home screen...So in other words, when I drag my colored brave browser app to home screen, it leaves the color behind and makes it black and white on home just lke the Graphene stock apps. I don't mean to pick your brain all the time on this, but the more we know the more we can help everyone else so I appreciate your help. I been advertising Graphene in Twitter spaces a lot lately and donated to them as well.

Missed this reply, but after playing around with my phone recently, I believe that's because of how Themed icons work. If you enable the settings under Settings -> Wallpaper & style -> Themed icons. If you disable that, the icons will not be changed from their default. With that enabled, the icons on your home screen are themed and the icons in the app drawer remain stock and will be their default colors.

There needs to be more God damn information from the GrapheneOS team on how to deal with bullshit like I'm going through right now concerning buying a phone on Ebay that IS unlocked but still OEM is greyed out. Having to hunt this crap down, like how to use IMEI to find out what carrier the phone was with, crap like that. This Graphene team is too anti-social to truly make this software even grow. Makes me not want to support them anymore tbh.

It sounds like you purchased a phone that is carried unlocked, but not OEM unlocked. Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and if the OEM unlocking is still greyed out then you most likely have a Verizon pixel. The bootloader is lock by Verizon and there is no way to unlock it. Whether the phone is OEM unlocked or not is not the fault of any of the alternate phone OS's (CalyxOS, GrapheneOS etc.) That's something done by Verizon. You need to ask the seller (if you're buying used and not directly from Google), if the OEM unlock option available.

I'm just irritated at the time consumed by having to find the right phone just to gain the right to privacy back from tech tyranny.
