Using a flat washer with a rubber gasket under it should take care of any water. Also, a nylon insert lock nut will keep everything nice and tight. Search for your local gasket or rubber hose shop. They can cut you gaskets or maybe give you a small piece of material.

You probably did by now but a large flat washer is needed. It will distribute the weight of the wing nut on the plastic. Without them the plastic will flex over time and stress the plastic out to the point the wing nut will pull right through the case when you are going down the highway. Widest washer you can find would be best.

It got some condensation in it once, I think because I had too much stuff in one side and it sort of bulged and didn’t seal good, I opened it and dried it out and it hasn’t had any water in it since. I did buy a bag of like 100 1/4in nuts to swap out for the wing nuts and just for peace of mind when I do I’m going to silicon it.

The reason some of us measure the distance is because some of us already have RTT’s, awnings, etc. installed on our roof racks. It would be a pain to have to loosen all that up for a little cargo box.
